wheat for May delivery was sold down from
Wife to ItiV , nml the crowd was bunched
on the top when the bottom was reached.
The warm wrather seemed to ulvo every
body courage tc sell. It only needed that
"government report" to satisfy a good many
pconlo that a largely Increased Quantity of
whsat was going to bo harvested from
nil enlarged area some time in March or
April. Later , when the weather prophoti
began to predict the near arrival of a polar
wive , the .scalpers thought that harvest
might be deferred two or three months , and
they set about covorlm : with considerable
Industry. There was also no little good
general buying for "long account , " nnd the
result was a strong ulvancc , which ulti
mately carried the price to ! * $ Hci a rally of

Indicative of a furious clamor for our wheat
for Mupincnt abroad. It Is well to note ,
liowevcr , that the clearances from the Atlan
tic seaboard for yesterday in wheat and Hour

wheat went out from each of the principal
jmrts. The receipts at Minneapolis show an
increase , but at all other primary points they
arc very small , while the shipments
Indicate a steady. though as yet

millers are not such rampant bulls as they
wore when they were loading up with wheat
last fall , but they confess to a depletion of
stores and u possible scarcity of wheat ,
though they are not displaying us great
alarm over the prospects as some of the bulls
In the wheat pit. There appears to bo new
blood In the wheat market , and the strong
loi'al people who have been riding the market
down arc now arrayed on the other side.
This list includes such men as Cudaliy , Kent ,
Hloom , Keam , Driver , Linn and possibly
Hwltzer , and the old bull party
admits that it is glad to have
their assistance. and that of their
following. The general crowd is still bear
ish. but the buying for the last day or two
lias been of an unusually good class. It is
duo to say , too , that very few of the broad
gunge bulls ore now seemingly anxious for
a speedy advance- values. They acknowl
edge that one palpably weak spot in their
line is the large stock of wheat in Now York ,
! " ] thov want to see it rcduco-l. New York
rather led Chicago most of tlio tirno to-day ,
which is not an unhealthy sign. Locally ,
Swltzcr was the heaviest buyer of wheat to
day , and Fall-bank was quoted as a liberal
purchaser.
Corn was linn , and the demand was good
In Liverpool to-day , according to the cable
report * of that market. Export clearances
were very heavv , and the dc'uand on foreign
account at New York and Haltimorc was re
ported as being limited only by the tonnage
offerings. With wheat and corn shippers
Toth ) looking for vessels an advance in the
freights may result , which would ncutrali/o
to some extent the moderate advance in the
foreign markets. The receipts here were 31
rars in excess of yesterday's estimate , .but.
there being only three carsof No. - ' , the gross
excess brought no satisfaction to parties hayIng -
Ing outstanding contracts for delivery in
February and March. The estimates for
to-morrow arc 250 cars. The day was
a dull one In the corn pit , like
many of its immediate predecessors ,
nnd in the end prices were somewhat easier.
The fluctuations were very narrow , nnd the '
business was confined to the local operators ,
nnd there was loss anxiety among February
nnd March short sellers , although they were
not entirely easy. The closing tlguros show
about ! > , c decline from yesterday's closing
quotations.
Trading in oats was light. There was no
disposition to press sales , and while tlio de (
mand was small , a linn feeling was obtained ,
nnd bids on near futures were advanced a
fraction without calling out any special
business. May was In moderate request a
around i27J e , with the interest confined
chiclly to local traders. The receipts and es- 2
mates were fair , while the stocks exhibited
no special reduction. No. 'J onts in store
were nuotably steady at 24Jf c , with the sales
principally by sample.
The provision trade was again boorishly $
inclined. The rather fair receipts
of hops encouraged the weakness
previously prevailing , nnd on the ap
pearance of sellers the product
resumed Its old down hill course. Lam was
relatively stronger than either short ribs or
vork , as it was evidently supported more or
leas by the Knglish houses , yet something of
a decline was suffered all around. In pork
the day's actual depression was L"JK@2je , in
short ribs lOCgl'J c and in lard tytfe.

throughout the list were confined to the pro

turns. The cominisilon people were doing
comparatively nothing , but seem to take a
more hopeful view of the situation. The
immediate course of the market depends
upon the result of the presidents' mooting ,
now being held In Chicago. One significant
feature of the market nv , present is the ab
sence of any Inclination on the part of the
benr speculators to carry their operations
Into the bond market. This department of
the stock exchange is active , and the opinion
was expressed by one of the oldest bond
houses in the street , that no such demand for
this class df securities has boon scon since
the boom of 1SSO-S1. There was a rumor in
circulation of a controversy batwonn tha
Lnckawanna and Lchlgh Valley people , rela
tive to anthracite property in Pennsylvania ,
but it failed to exert nnv unfavorable effect
on coal properties. Foreign houses who
bought Krio common n month or so ago for
