1T3E OMAHA DAILY BEE : FRIDAY , JANUAKY 25. 1889. THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS Local Wheat Trndo , ns a Rule , Was Strong. CORN STILL FIRM , BUT DULL. In I'rovlhloim n We k Koclliltr I'rc- vnllCnule H.iii otl Slow , With 1'ilccH nt the Lowest Wt CHICAGO IMIODUCI2 MAUKKT. . & CIIKAOO , .fcin. 24 [ Special Telctrram to THE line I The local wheat market had ono or two sick spots to dav < but as a whole it was strong. The European markets came In weak and declining , and the New York people In the export trade soml lugubrious renorts of the state of trade Nevertheless , nn inci casing volume of export business is being done , and the seaboard seems to bo down to n shipping basis on an even keel with forelitn Importing ports. The froth on the surface him a strong bearish coloring , but under the surface .1 f nen llmr fcollng lor nlicat is clearly gene-rating , mid experienced grain merchants feel moved nt this tlmo to recall to the attention of their friends the fact that the foreigners invaria bly "bc.tt this country on a down lull nice In wheat , ' ' and to the further fact that the lor- ( ilgncrs rarely show any eagerness as buyers of wheat until our homo mantels stop declin ing nnil pi ices turn up. Kuithermoic , the claim Is stronglj advanced by the best posted L'l > J men In the grain tr.ulo that wliu.it in Chicago ' 7 is on a parity with the other markets c lit i i nnd south of heic , taking into consideration the milling merits of the trrain. This claim seems to bo well founded , ns Chicago is notoriously the only uity in the coun try whcic grades have been kept up religiously On little Hurries wheat for May was twito broken down to Mr , and on ono of these occasions the price touched ( > " > % < ' . On the bleak a good deal of long wheat came out on stop loss ordei s , and for n while the local situation looked very blue There was a good class of buying on the breaks , however , .ma the mnrkct was not long iccoverinc its tona of RtondincHS. Probably the most notkcablo strictly local feature was the ostentatious selling of wheat by Hutchlnson's brokers. "When this opuiator begins to advertise his opciations In u most conspicuous fashion , the "foxy" scalpers conclude that he Is throwing dust in their faces , and ono of their number observed "Hutchlnson can throw dust In thc > eyes of the ciowd faster and moieoluiiiinously than any other man intliowoild" The very heavy buying for two dnjs by I'oolo and othois who are fro- fluently used by Hutclihibon , lent color to the suspicion that had found lodgment , in the pit. It Is of course impossible In n market of the magnitude of this to tell what ! ? going on deep down , but tlio impression prevails among the well informed people of good Judgment that the enormous liquidation that lias been m progiess recently nnd the consequent icadjiiscment of affairs hns left the inaiket grounded on a much Hi incr foundation than u has had in months , and that pi actlcally all long wheat that can bo "shaken out" hao been sold. The bears natmally combat this tlicoi , and hold staunchly that it is foolish to talk about whp.it being on a healthy basis above OOc. Tim tone of the mailiot was stronger the last half hour of the session than at antitnopic - viously , and the closing prd'ci wore onlv about Ic from the outside May slat ted off at ( JTc , sold down to ! )0c ) , rallied to INi c , biol'o to tl5J < c , rallied to ! l7c , icnctsd to SIC c , ranged to DO fC'iM'i'e for quite a time , with 07c the favorite quotation , nnd towards the last ad vanced to U7Jf c , closing at OT'-fc , or % c better than jestcrdav. February opened at Iflc , ranged to IRJ'uffJ'MJicand closed nt < M % nominal , .luljffipciicd at S'.lc , ranged to b ' < gS'.lc ' , and closed ut 8c. ! There was again a firm fcolmg in the coi n market , but business ruled dull and the vo uuio of u was small. The iccoipts hero wore about 'JO cars .short of yesterday's anticipa tions , but some Incicaso Is anticipated for to morrow , the estimate being JGO cars. The exports continue on a liberal scale , but the English markets were quoted as tending down for American coin. The offerings from hoio nro , of course , heavy , but the demand for shipment was again good , notwithstanding the discouraging advices. There was some anxiety by the shorts in February nnd March , in view of the continued scarcity of the grade required for the filling of specu lative sales. Tlio character of the day's ' trading was of the usual local scalping de scription , mid presented no features of moment , outside of the scarcity of February nnd March , when they were Inquired for by parties short on those deliveries. The clos ing quotations aie from J c to Jfc iilgfior on near futures , and May improved 3-iGo but wus inactive. Five and one-half boat loads wcio bought in New York for export. Oats lapsed into dullness , with only a light trade at nearly steady prices The few trading orders of any consequence that up- poaied , centeicd in May , which sold early ut % ( i5'J7Kc. n decline of nearly } o , nnd ro- covoicd later. The inspected icceipts con tained about 25 per cent of the contract grade. Ju provisions a weak feeling again held control Tlicio was no unusual pressure to tell , yet as the demand was limited the offerIngs - Ings placed on sale found n slow market , and f-ollcrs wcro forced to make concessions. Trade was in a slumpy condition from the start , and a much lower range of prices was established all around In pork the day's > iot decline amounted to 'i' nfAdc , m lurd to ' and In shoit libs to 10c. The only rea son why any dealer is willing to handle tlio books is found in the indirect bcnejlt resultIng - Ing from having them In stock. The whole thing is looked upon by thinking men in this state as a glgantie job. The ben- ellts arising are two : Fust , uni formity of text books ; second , cheapness to the pupil. The disadvantages of the hchcino are numeious , und lecognizcd very genoially by educators outsidu of the state boaid. Sotno of the books uio admir.iblc , but they do not all come up to that st.indanl of cxcel- loneo achieved by eastern publislieis. Nearly ovcry teacher tliinUs it a disadvan tage to bo limited to the selection of text-books to tlio production of the fraternity in this stato. The main- mar , for instance , is commended by one teacher who icgards the United States his tory as a very dry and unmterebting work. It is entirely too heavy for elementary students , and lacks that brightness which gives reputation to some of thu works pub lished by the great Now Yoik and Clilungo llrins. The .itato boaid selects seine eminent Instructor and engages him to compile a text book. Ho may be u superior teacher and a wretched editor. His book comus before tlio board , is examined and u picssuto brought to bear at tlio right time sccmes its ondoiso- ment. The compiler obtained the job through his political frlonds , and forces tlio result of his labors upon the state by the same method. The principle Is admittedly bad. bad.Tho The language of the law shuts out compe tition , for it otTois no bonus for excellence in the preparation of a text book. The compila tion is done by homo teauliors in the stnto who are paid n per diem , if it opened the compilation to competition of eastern ex perience and knowledge , the results would bo far more satisfactory. The city of .San rrancisco , with its board of education , its skilled teachers , is not permitted to select the sciics of boous to bo used in its public schools. It takes the state books , good or bad. bad.Tho The expense to the state is enormous. The character of ) iiluting , not altogether excel lent ; the opportunity for jobbery unpauil- lolcd In the history of stnto printing schemes , The state board of education , which is sup posed to father the idea , is obliged to appear before the legislatuto as lobbyists In order to secure the iippiopriatlons required , The original plant and cost ot compilation is a llxed charge , and the expanse of pufftlng the books depends upon the skill , economy und honesty of the printing department , 'iho stntousurps a business properly belonging to private enterprise , and all on thu plea of saving money to the school children. A Bet ter plan would have been to invite competi tion from eastern houses llrst ah to the char acter of the text boons , and second ns to the cost of producing thorn. A still better plan would bo to keep out of the school book busi ness entirely , and leave It wheiu it belongs to men who make it a business , and who nro forced by competition to offer thn best goods at thu lowest prices.
