THE UKE.I The wheat market was lareely In

vlduiil opinion The opposing iiartic
nro more than ordinarily nervous these
days and anticipate an early departure fron
the beaten rut. The more conservative
among the operators will not bo surprised il
the start is not made for u month , by which
time the /lour supplies will have probably
adjusted themselves to the natural condi
tions of trade , and the visible wheat stocks
will lie In process of settled reduction. The
news features wcro particularly uninterest
ing to-day. Few cables were received , nn <
these reflected ineru firmness , nothing more.
They brought buying orders for goodly
amounts , however , which compensated the
commission houses for the absence of scnsa
tlrms. A general improvement in the Hour
trade Is noted , and some bullish items
drifted in from the northwest. Two of the
largcxl mills in that section re
ported the sale of their en
tire week's output , and 1'lllsburj
II red in a budget of bull pointers , Hoyil gel
a dispatch that stocks of No. 1 bard wheat in
Minneapolis are smaller than they were it
September. The movement of wheat , the
country over , is very light. Minneapolis re
reived GO cars to-day and shipped out 3 cars
Chicago received ! 1T cars , mid to-morrow's
estimate is'I cars. Small as is the oxportion
of wheat mid Hour , the aggregate is about
equal to the receipts at the primary points
The undertone of the market seems quite
strong , but speculative inquiry is not general
and the lifting power is only moderate. The
most important bear influence to-day was the
snow. It outweighed everything else
The snow that lias fallen in this section
seems to have ueen general over a very laree
winter wheat area , and it w.is commonly
construed as being a grand good thing for
that crop. This is only an incident in the
development of the crop , but it is favorable ,
and relieved the minds of many scalpers ol
the fear that there would not bo bread
enough to KO uround. The snow Inllui'iicetl
the local talent to sell n great deal of whe.it
to-day. The range of May wheat to-day
was Sl.UIJi&U-O" ) , and that giound
was traveled over with great frequency.
Outside limits wore baicly touched ,
but fluctuations between $1.0-1 4tl ( ) l-0ul4 wcro
frequent. The opening was around ? 1 HS\ ©
1.0V * The market sold down to fl.OVf , , up
to $1 O.VH , off to f l.H % , up to $1 O.Vf , , oir to

several times , rnuucd from Vl.lMJj tofl.or ,
and buck toward the last to l.0lf' < , where it
i csteU at the close. This is % e lower than
yesterday. The volume of transactions w.is
not especially heavy , though prlco changes
were sufllciontly sharp to cause a rattling
trade among the local people. Quotations
on January wheat were nominal at O'J ' e.
July opened nt 10'f/c , sold down to l)5o ) and
closed there.
The little life exhibited by corn yesterday
was crushed out of the market to-day .f It
resumed its dull and uninteresting routine ;
even the scalpers , who aio usually on
the outlook for turns of l-10c , left the pit
in despair of getting even that much out of
the fluctuations of the day. .Exports wcro
luoderato in quantity from the Atlantic
ports , while Now Orleans figured as an exporter
porter of 21,000 bushels to London ana as
much more to Urcmen. The Insncatlon re-
tuinshcro tliow a continuance of the small
proportion of No. 2 , but at Now York , with
their less rigid rules , out of 408 cars received
to-day 108 graded No. 2. The market opened
higher , influenced by the inspection returns
and the wet weather , but on considerable of-
forinus , and in sympitby with the softening
tendency of wheat , became weak and dull ,
declining fractionally , but with only a small
business passing. In the last few minutes
the offerings increased under the influence
of the closing dip in the wheat market , mak
ing the lowest quotations of tlie day rule at
the end. The decline from yesterday is fiom
EvOats lucked animation , ruling dull , with
light spee'iilativotiading during tlio most of
the session , und averaging uaslur. This was
especially true nf May , which sold down 3gO
to ' ijfc , closing heavy at USc asked. Thcro
WUH not an > imrticular pressure to Bell , but
tlio market lacked outsldo support. This
month wuselull , with bids slightly below yesterday
torday , while February wus relatively linn.
Ifo. S oats , to go in store , sold nt 25c , and
samples were in fair supply. The estimated
receipts for to-morrow are smaller than for
tlio two days past.
Trade in provisions was spasmodic nnd of
smaller volume than for several days past.
At times the pit showed positive dullness ,
and tlio market , by reason of the
slower movement , was less buoy
ant. The receipts of hogs were again sonic-
what above expectations. Futures of that
product opened nt substantially the closing
range of yesterday , but the free bollinf ? of
pork early by Haldwln , presumably for
Armour , broke the prlco of May from
flll.orjs toia.l.r , the oniclal opening being
13.05. In the meantime May lard declined
from I'.tX ) to S7.60 , ami ribs from
$7.10 to $7.00. Pork qulcklv rallied to
f 13.50 , as there appeared to bo plenty of buy
ing orders nt anything below that , and for
nearly an hour the market was poirged at
around $1I,47K@11.W. ! ! May ribs reached to
17.05 , but lard showed nu utter lack of re-
rnporativo power , and continued to drag at
the bottom llgurcs. The largest buying of
pork to-day was by Norton Worthlngton.
The market was utterly devoid of features ,
nnd there were no cables. It looks as though
most of the shorts have iccoverctl , and that
the leading packers and their follow ing are
working to shako out the smaller class
of holders. At any rnto there were
increased offerings to-day by the packing in-
icrest , and the boom appears to bo out of the
market nt this wilting. Cash trading was
only moderate In volume , and the sales pub'
Ilely rnported were again mainly of lard nt
f7.ii5M7.35. Green hams , averaging K
pounds , sold nt fS.S7K. The bpcculativo
market closed uteadv and 11 rm ut the decline ,
which amounted to 15o in pork , lOo in lard
und ifa } In ribs.

Cattle.
Wednesday , Jan. 0 , 1880.
It was afternoon before the cattle market
could really bo said to have opened , In fact II
was almost midday before the buyers could
bo induced to go out Into the yards and even
look at tlio cattle. The best cattle wcro not
very coed on tlie average , nnd the bii.vcrs
were hard to please , mil when they did Uni
something that they hnppencel to want tbcj
paid about steady prices for it : otherwise the
market was weak. When the trade was
onccMimlcr way quite n good many cuttle
were rushed over the scales In n short time ,
nnd the market did not close until very lute ,
Feeders were In liberal supply mill there
was considerable trading In that class ol
stock at steady to 8tron prices.
llnis.
The iccelpts were eiulto liberal again today -
day , nnd although the market did not open
until quite late , the bulk of tlie oirerln's ( hail
changed hands bolero midday. The market
was about steady with the close of yester
day. _
Uliccp.
There were n good many sheep hero to
day , but the sales wore not hoavv. About
yesterday's prices were maintained.

eOn Now Year's uiirht , bot.voon ! ) and
11 oVloe'k , the singular npucUioloVIIH
witnessed of a mirage tit night. The
elay linel boon very warm , tlio tlionnoin-
eter rcai'liintr ( > 0 in the shade , anil the
coiulitiiin of the atmosphere was cer
tainly unusual. The siiy was more or
le'sI'louded , parlioularly on the hori-
/on , anel patches of ] uuiric lire were
\ isibio at all points of the cotiin.i ] ) > < . To
the north , south and west there was
nothing in their appearance to attract
attention , but two masses e > f lire to tlio
northeast of Carringlon were unlike
thote in any other direction. The lircs
were , with wonderful elistinotnoss ,
raised into the very elenidsjust as in tlio
brilliancy of the sunlight tlio obscure
staok it , made te > a-sumo the dimensions
of a lofty to\vor. There was a perfect
reflection eif the lire in the clouds. Ineli-
yiduiil tongues of Maine were * pioturcel
in the Hiiperhcatcd strata. At another
time the ) reflected lire seemed to waver
in the air likes the restless shimmer of
the most brilliant aurora. The spectacle -
clo lasted until tlio lire died out. Alto
gether the sight was most singular and
beautiful.
I chesoi'fully recommend Ifed Clover
Tonic to those buffering from troubles
of the stomach and liver. I am now on
iny second bottle and it makes mo feel
like a now man. C. M. Connor. Nashua ,
