U'hiit ho may bo rtoltiK untlor cover , of course , nobody can fll , but the crowd has sized him lilt ns belti ( ; cnupht heavily short on n Jnmrkct that displays a decidedly buoyant tendency. In any event he has encountered muscular and courageous opposition in the sliapo of Hternly buying tt.v strong people , who express great conlldcnco In higher prices. The feature most noticeable during tlie. llrst co.iplo of hours to-day was the buyIng - Ing of Dunn , Ocddes , Uo.vd , Warren , and in fuel nearly every house with foreign connec tions. Tills was generally regarded us short wheat , but , however that , may be , a change of front on the part of the speculative foreign connection Is not without especial HiKiiillcanco at this moment in the light of the prlvnto advices mentioned in this column indicating a hardening tendency in Knglish and continental marl - l < cU. Another incident in the early trading was the adroit manner in which Kent sold out his lot of long wheat , through the mo- ilium of n battalion of corn brokers who in vaded the wheat pit and spilled out n great quantity of grain , afterwards giviny up the iinmo of 1'oole Kent's leading broker on trade. This operation was what caused the principal , and , in fact , the only imoortant break of the day. Uy nil odds tliu niost noticeable feature , however , was the steady absorption of wheat by strong local people. Their ability to buy was apparently only limited by the amount of the ofTcrlimo , nnd HiitrhiiiFon found it absolutely impossible to "drown" the market with speculative properly , to his open disgust. The weather map was also a tonic for bull nerves. It de mited the approach of n very cold wave , backed by a high baromcterical area , Indica tive of a "dry freeze , " a state of the weather not healthful for exposed winter wheat. May wheat sold "in the olllocs" last night at S1.0.V , and at the opening this morning at Sl.O.Ui" . The iirlco speedily worked down to 51.0S. and from there up to Sl.lC ) , back to fl.05.s ! , and up to fl.Oj-V It was hero that the dis covery of Kent's unloading was discovered , nnd n break to Sl.Olfollowed. . For a time the price ranged between ? 1.0l'.j'and ' $1.01 ; ' , but toward noon the market turned up , nnd n slow but steady appreciation of values cn- Hiied , tlio price going to Sl.O.Vtf. During the last lialf hour the price Undiluted between l.oriaml l.O.V.j , the last quotation being M ( i."i-V January and February prices were merely nominal , thcro being -no trade in these months. July otoncd | at ' .Ui c , ranged to ! ' . 'i > . . ( ti'.Hi. ' c , and closed atlK > ' 4u. The do mestic market news was not particularly im portant. The primary movement continues light and the export business at tlio sea board is too small to mention. The situation seems to bo without any irrcat change. Mil waukee , however , reported a sale of 5,000 sacks of Hour for export , in addition to the M,000 mentioned yesterday. The corn market put on a more lively ap pearance , and the amount of business done was inttcli above the recent average. The fcnlingvas firmer also , nnd the attendance in the trading arena was much improved. From the Atlautio coast the clearances wcro under those of tlio last few days , but from the port of New Orleans there was mi in crease , 10,000 bushels having cleared from thcro yesterday. The slight advance in price checked the demand from the shippers , nnd at New York there was less inquiry than for some timo. The weather here being damp , and tlio Inspection showing no improvement in tlio proportion of No. " , while the estimated receipts for to morrow were only 192 , cars , the market maintained the opening ilrmtiCKS , in which it wus also assisted by the strength in wheat. There were a good many buying orders , and u broader market thm : has recently existed. The orders wore gen erally for small quantities , but they wore mitllcicntly numerous to make a considerable aggregate. The llrmness ot tliu early trad ing continued throughout , and the last prices wuro about the best of the day , and uhow an improvement over yesterday's of Irom lja to 3 o per bushel. The receipts of oats were larcor than ex- pcetcd , and Included 191 cars inspected in , which exceeded that of liny dav for a long time. Notwithstanding this fact , the specu lative market was stronger to 'dW.j'o higher. This was ttuo partly to the tlrm- ness in the other markets and the general desire to buy , with .May the favorite. The i trading was nt no time heavy , though a moderate quantity changed hands at - < ( < < ! 12S'c. ' , This month and February were quotable nt ' 40 higher , nnd cash oats were fetronger nt "oc for No. 'J in store.- * - There wus n weak and lower opening to tlio provision market on the Ir.rgcr receipts of hogs than expected. The reports from the stock yards gave W.OOO head , with the quality good nnd prices r Qt > lOo lower. Karly In the day the bears made a savage raid on the market , and the opening llgures showed n decline from yesterday's closing range at fie in pork , r > ( < i7Ku in lard nnil rj criliic in ribs. Later , the good Imylnu of pork and lard by Armour &Cudahy and Hnxtcrturncd prices up , nnd thcro was u substantial re covery. The speculative offerings through out were largnr than for several days past , and business was quite active from the start to the llnish. Tlio market has broadened per ceptibly during the past week , though there lias has been no Increase to speak of in the outside orders. Tlio feature of the day was the delivering out of some I'J.OOO tierces of cash lard early. Tills caused n widening of the difference between January nnd May to L'OG2oa In the regular cash market thcro existed a good demand for lard and pioklcd meats , aside from which trade was quiet. The foreign markets were re ported steady for both lard and bacon , with prices a slmdo higher for the latter. During the last hour of the session there- was n good general demand , nnd the market , though Btill shpwlng nervousness , became stronger , nnd pork advanced to the highest point of the day , or $111.0. ) for May. The general list was duito dull and uninteresting and lluctuatlons were within n range of V percent. Wimbish , the well known politi- can seems to have been a biff iniritiilco on the part of Patrolman JJall , who inailu tlie arrest. Wimbish is known as one of the best of Atlanta's colored citizens , and as soon 'as ho was rcco nis'.oil by the olli- cers was promptly reluascil without any formal entry boiiiff maile against him. Ho was naturally very indignant at his treatment. "The facts in the case , " said ho , "are simply these : I had an cnga einont a lady , who is employed at the house in question , to accompany her to an enter tainment. About 7 o'clock i called at Llio front dooi"of the house and rang Iho hell twice , and it was answered by an olliccr , who requested my name and business , which I fjayo. Notwithstand ing my full explanation to him , ( wlneh bhould have satisfied a man witli sense and discretion ) , ho carried me to the stationhouso , where the same statement was made to the stationhouso keeper that was in ado to him , and I was ordered released. No case was made against me. The whole nTalr ( was an outrage upon mo , and I candidly iay that /eel very indignant at this treatment. " Advice to Mothers.
