Then n report was received from Vrlmu that winter wheat was In u critical i-ondll Ion , nnd that uxccptlonnlly line wcuther would bo necessary to insure u Rood crop. ThiH nddud to the bullish feeling , llaro whent Holds In thi ; middle of January are not I'onduclve to the growth of a bearish senti ment. Tills Is ono of the features that is at- tnictlne Increiised iittentlon. Toward the doHo Alilwaultoo rJiiortcd an export nalo of HK)0 ( sicks ; of low Knulo llonr , nnd last , but not least. there was n , llrst rate general btiyliiK all day by Htronjc local people , Kulrbanlt 'end ' In- , ' . The two C5eorne Smiths and their followings - lowings , I inn , Cndahy , the Dunn following , nnd moft of the Inrwo hottscH , were steady pnrfhaser.i. HiiU'tilnson led the selling jinrtj' , and uUctnited | several raids , but without doing any thing except lo fon-o toin- | ( orary depression. Thu friends or wheat exhibited coiirago and powers of absorption not shown for ninny days past. So strong was the undertone that was developed that llutrliinson durinjf tlm last hour and u half desisted from further drives , anil from 1 to 1 o'clock the course uf values was steadily upward. May wheat opened at $ I.KIJ ( < , nnd for a considerable period the pneo ranged between Sl.lKJJp and H.OI'.j' , with quotations momentarily 'si1 outside ot these extremes , both ways. When it became apparent Iliad there was going to he a decrease in the visi ble supply instead of an increase , the price shot up to f I.O-U.j , nt which point Hutchinson sold n largo quantity , nnd the price worked back to SI. 01. After the llgurcs were posted the price was broken from $1.04nM to $ l.03 * < , from which tlgujo it climbed with only tin occasional outback to Cl.OTiVrfl.O.V. , ' . Dur ing the last twenty minutes the scalpers realized freely , and the market "gigged" back a little , hut the undertone remained llrmtotlieelo.se. January opened nt ( > 8 ? < c , ranged to U8J < ( ' ( $1.00. and closed at il'.l c. July opened atiltc , ranged from Uljfcto .Hie , mid closed nt tir jc , May closed nt Sl.lMJiJ. The announcement of the apiroach ol a cold wave gave the market its lliml bull iwmgo. Tlio news from the northwest looked both ways. There was very little In the way of market gossip from thu eastern points , but the prevailing Hontiment seems to bo turningitiito | strongly in the direction of improvement. The com market was sluggish , but fairly Mi'itdy iu price. The receipts were satisfac tory , but inspection showed a small proportion tion of No. ' - . There was a noticeable im provement In this respect , however , reported from New York , the proportion of No. U re ceived at that point havint ; suddenly advanced " vanced from 12 per cent , tho" former aver age , to12 per cent to-day. Kxport clearances rontintio on a good scale , nnd about 100.00U bushels were bought in Now Vork by ex porters to-day. Although the amount of business clone was .small , the feeling generally favored the bull side. Tlioro was some hesitation when lUi,000 ( : bushels was posted as increase to the stocks in sight , but the activity and firmness in wheat made the shorts somewhat anxious , and tn their efforts to cover , the market became stronger and more active , pntlicularly in the last live minutes of the session , when the highest figures of the day were reached. Closing prices are about \c \ t higher to-day than Saturday's llmires , and a tJ tI llrin feeling prevailed to the close. Oats ruled fairly active early , with quie I tude tending to dullness later. The feeling was llrmer under less pressure to sell , and it was thought that seine of tliu recent bear operators had withdrawn. Tbcro was a Blight decrease in both the visible supply nnd the local stocks , though the posted re ceipts were fairly liberal , containing about 14 per cent of contract grades. May was Jinn to Xii ! > : ' ( , u higher , with near futures dull nt recent quotations. No. 2 in store was in fair request and fC'l4O higliernt2 2IXc. The withdrawals from hloro were ,2,03(5 ( bushels ) The general provision list was active and strong at a further advance in prices. The market was decidedly more bullish in tone than at any time smco it began to show a hardening tendency , and to-day's advance , which amounted to 20n'J.C ( in pork , 2TJ ( ! 'o In lard and I'JJ lSu in ribs , was fairly maintained to the close. Speculative offerings wcro only modcrato , and the demand from the shorts was quite urgent. That those outstanding are becom ing anxious to cover is upparcnt , in view of the undertone of strength developed of late. In the early dealings Wright was thu largest individual seller of iiork , while brokers sup posed to represent Armour , ana others bo- llevcd to bo operating for Ream , wcro the I largest buyers. Tlio local crowd very gcnurally appear to bo working on the theory tint substantial improvement In val ues will bo witnessed in the near future. Ex pectations for a continuance of the light receipts of hogs and thu good weather for imcKlng operations is equally general. Trad ing was again chiefly In May optoins , though February and March iard nnd ribs received considerable attention. The opening llgtirns were some what above Saturday's closings , and the market advanced quite sharply early , May pork selling up from SKI.15 to * 13.l)5 ) ( 8ia.GTK , together with the snino option of lurd from ST.tio to $7.72'.f , and ribs from S7.10 to 7.1'J.1 . 1'rlees hung steady for a time at the ad vance , and later May pork Improved to fill. 72 , ' , but during the hist half hour a re- nctlon carried pork do wn 15o and lard 5 ( < { 7Jtfc.
