Clay- comb is a verdant specimen from some out-of-the-way farm , and is about as fresh an object as is commonly found at this bcnon of the year. Uis hands arc still calloused from a long continued acquaintance with the husking peg , but ho decided all tit oneo to cast oil rural restraint , go to the city and em bellish the iniquitous places of earth with a gaudy carmine coat , spreading it on as thieidy as it would stand. He came to the BlulTs. The scene of his first operations , and , in fact , his prin cipal stamping ground , was in that delectable - lectablo locality known to the initiated , , as "Itotten How. " It was here that Silas Sanguineous Claycomb estab lished his headquarters and entered upon his brief but notoriously idiotic public career. In an incredibly short space of time ho became known to every denizen of that neighborhood on account of his exceeding numorosity. Ho was seemingly present everywhere , so rapidly did ho Hit from one dom icile to another , and his cash was also moving as rapidly as ho was , but in the other direction. 'lie purchased unlimited quantities of beer and gin for the antiquated mon strosities called the ' 'girls,1' ( for want of a more inappropriate appellation ) , and paid up all arrearages in rent whenever such cases wore made known to him. lie nuibt have all the market afforded , anil it was paid for in good and lawful currency of the "United States. " In the space of a few ileoting hours Silas Sanguineous was in that unenvia ble condition in which so many of his ilk find themselves dead broke. Then it was that ho began to think of the days that wore dead and the money that was spent. Ho rushed down to Broadway and fairly olcctriHcd the people therewith the statement that ho had been robbed of hundreds of dollars in broad day light. Ho was willing to toll all about it , but was too drunk to dose so coherently. Finally ho was put to bed ana slept off the effects of his numerous deep potations. Ho then meandered unsteadily out to a street corner , and as the chilly January brco/.es toyed with his youthful raspe- tuz , ho longed for n zephyr from the barnyard and the sight of n friendly haystack. Ho resolved to call in the strong arm of the law , and his pitiful case was ac cordingly laid hero for the inspection and consideration of the police. In accordance with the facts stated oy Silas , Mr. Cqjllruj was lodged behind the bars , and there ho remains until the truth of his accuser's story can bo investigated. A few parties tire inclined to kick be cause the high school is to bo moved to the new Atkins building , and censure the school board for the change , forget ful of the ( act that the city voted for such u move when it voted to erect the building , and the school board is abso lutely powerless to change that vote , oven if BO inclined. It appears that the kick comes from those who do not fully understand the situation , . There is am ple room left in the Atkins building for other grades , and it is probable that such a clungo will bo made as soon as it can bo advisably done , although tills will not bo before the end of the school year , on account of the regntding und changing of teachers that would neces sarily result. The Atkins building is more cen trally located than any of the others , and is better fitted for n high school , having been built with special reference to that end , while the Bloomer building was not intended for that purpo e , and is essentially a ward school. Thursday and Friday evenings will bo union services , the former at the Presbyterian , the latter nt the Congre gallona ! church. The Broadway Methodist people will conduct special services every evening during the week. This may be the be ginning of a trcnuine revival season nt this church , for should the results of this week warrant it the meetings will be continued next week. Yesterday morning , in speaking of the unparaielled audacity displayed in running the gambling houses in Council Bluffs , the Uov. D. C. Franklin said he knew of no way of reforming a man or abolishing an evil _ except to show the man his condition or to point out the evil. He conceived it to be his duty to speak plainly with reference to this matter , lie had done so until now , and sliould continue to do so. It was God's plan , and was the duty of His followers , to follow clo.-ely along this lino. He said ho had received a number of anonymous letters warning him to be very careful what he said in the pulpit concerning the saloons and gambling hou-cs ; that he was not to bo intimidat ed from performing his duty by any such means ; thatjio should continue to do his duty along this line and leave the results with the Lord. In this mat ter of reform ho urged the Christian people to stand firm , shoulder to shoul der , unitedly , for this was the way to win iiny conflict. Ho congratulated the city in that it possessed paper.- ) which claimed to bo no more than secular , and yet , wore earnestly fighting for the enforcement of law and the abolishment of the biiloon. Tuesday evening the First Baptist church will hold its annual meeting and elect its olllcers for the ensuing year. Next Sabbath evening the now converts who so desire will receive the ordinance of baptism. As preparatory to this and their formal - mal admission into the church yester day morning , the pastor s Dr. Cooley , preached a very instructive discourse from the 139th psalm , 17th and ISth verses. "How precious also are thy thoughts to mo , O God ! How great is the sum' of them ! If I should count them they are more in number than the sand : When I awake I am still with thee. " The development of the subject was substantially as follows : "There are It.'t.OOO promises in the bible , which contain God's thoughts of his human children. The text does not , lissome suppose , mean our thoughts of God , but His thoughts of us. Th.o idea 'God thinking- man , ' must no't bo taken tib- giraetly , but in a concrete sense , for each one Of theao tllOU.T t ; ! of you as a pcr&on and I as an individual. God thought of us away back in the councils of eternity when he was planning crea tion. Ho know man would bo created ; that ho would bo tempted and fall , and then Ho provided for his redemption , for the Lamb was slain from before the foundation of the world. Ho thinks of us actively at our right hand , not afar off , in some distant part of His universe , lip known our thoughts and our desires. His knowledge of us covers not only the past and the present , but the future as well. These 'thoughts' are not only great , but many. The minuteness of that knowledge is wonderful. 'Tho very hairs of our heads are numbered. ' Those thoughts are wonderful in their magnitude. " God's thought for our physical well being , our mutual development and our moral perfection were points taken up and discussed at length. Followingthis line the speaker said : " .Science teaches us that ages wore required to develop the earth ; darkness was upon the face of the deej ) and the earth was without form then man was created and given a habitation and a name. Between these two points of time ages upon ages had written their records , making a multi tude of changes in the character of the earth. All these were to the end of making a habitation for man giving you and I a homo. The gold and silver mid iron and all the wealth was planted for you and I. It was God's thought of us. IIo established the great forces of nature for our well being. All of the revolutions in society have boon for the benefit of His children. Nothing ever transpired with one of God's children that was not for his good. In this is a lesson forusall to learn. God's thoughts of us are marvelously scon in the agony in the garden , and in the crucifixion. In His resurrection and ascension and in the sending of the Holy Spirit into the world who should abide with us for ever. Some practical reflections wore given in closing. "Somo men , " said ho , "think that man la so great that he does not need any God. With others there is a tendency to underrate man. They say , 'Do you think thai so great a being as Ho ono who created all things , who fashions the world with Ills hand cares for such poor , insignificant creatures as wo aroVWhy , think of it. Ho did for us what Ho did not do for the angels , IIo gave His only begotten Son for us. IIo has given His angels charge concerning us. Ills our is eyor open to attend our cry , and His hand is over extended to us full of blessings. Jesus said : 'As the Father hath loved mo , so love I you.1 "Should you ask mo , 'Where is the highest reach of God's thought : " I would point you first to the Cross of Calvary , and then to the fact that lie stands at the door of your heart and knocks.
