THE OMABA UAJLUX" BEE : EIUDAY. DECEMBER 28. 1888. THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , Wheat Wns Much Qulotor Than Was Generally Anticipated. BEARS ARE NOT SO RAMPANT. Corn Tninc nml Prices Itullng Kasler Ontu Opened Moderately Active nml DculinliiK Provisions Homowliat Hotter. CHICAGO PUOOUCI3 MAKKI3T. CIIICAOO , Dec. ST. [ Special Tolcrain to Tun USB. ] The wheat market was much quieter to-tiny than was Renorally antici pated , nntl there was nt no time uny serious jircssuro to sell that Is , nothing like ycstcr- ilny. A quiet canvass nmonff the best posted pcotilo in trade confirmed tlio theory that n very largo percentage of the high priced loriR wheat timl been dumped on yes terday's slump , and that there was no rca- non to look for another dclngo around the current range of prices. The country Is still full of hears , and the board of trade Is their hcadiiiirtcrg ( | , but the more conservative unions the late advocates of lower prlcua arc looking with more friendly eyes nt thn market. They think that values may possi bly settle some further , but thc-y arc not the rampant bears they worn when May was quoted above 11.10. When cash wheat crossed the dollar mnrlt on the down turn they began to modify their views very ma terially. The selling out of a considerable quantity of wheat that could not bo disposed of yesterday on the slump , caused a weak opening and the price marked down from tl.03 at the start to fl.O'J } . At that point tliero was good buying and the market rallied % e. A period of quietness fol lowed , with the price i-loso to tl.03. The next move was a bulfu toll 01 , then the privet wus Jerked backed toJl.US . That proved to bo the bottom on the second break , and under the influence of good buying , wheat crowded up to $1. < > :1J : { . It got rather tame ngain anil dropped to Sl.aX'a , but about 10 o'clock it again became firm , and a liltlo later set off at a rapid pace from flM ) { , and didn't stop until fl.M ( % was reached. Hero there was a pause and a liltlo set buck to f 1.04k , followed i > y a further spurt to t 1 ( Ml ( gl.0-1 % . That seemed to be the extent of its [ rawer of recovery for the day. The breathing spell was a brief one , though , and another ivavo of enthusiasm took May to JU'S.'fj ' ' and lolt it nt $1.03. December rested nt WKc , January at 'jyv-jo , mid July at ' . 'do. The averugo recovery was about ' 'o , com pared with .yesterday's close. Trade in other months than May was very small. The firm ness in the market and the tendency of prices to advance was iittri tinted for the first couple of hours to the desire on the part of the Bhort.s to till tlmir contracts. The es- Bcnco of popular opinion was that nearly all the buying was by the shorts. Later on this view of the situation was very greatly mod ified. The depression that Is usually counted upon as certain to follow free covering by tlio shorts , unaccompanied by investment buying , did not come. Last night gossips had it that Hutchinson would not quit "gunning" for wheat until ho cot the price of May down to $1.00. That was the figure to which the bear army had Its hopeful eyes directed. Little doubt was felt \ > y most of tlio soldiers under that Jlag that prices would get there. It seems , v however , that other buyers besides the m nhorts were at work , and during tlio last hour of tlio trading session it was stated witli confidence that Kairbank , Cudahy , Linn , licani and IJaker had been heavy buyers. The suspicion of tlio scalpers was first aroused by the purchases by Hoche , uimi- blom , Hamlll and others , who took a great deal of property off the market and relieved whatever 1 hero was of pressure. Milimkt ; & liodman , Logan , Hoyd , McCormiek .t Co. , Jones , ICennett & Hopkins , Uuxlur , and in fact most of the heavier commission houses , absorbed a largo amount of wheat. Hlpom , too , was mentioned as a steady buyer in an open way. These wore tlio local features that contributed to the strength of tlto mar ket. Foreign news was scarce , and what came was conflicting. Husslan wheat was quoted as unreliable , and largo Indian ship ments were reported. On the other hand , the amount .on passage was shown to bo de creasing. Ono authority made tlio decrease 1,250,000 bushels , and the board's cor respondent put it at 220,000 bushels. New York advised that tliero was good buying of May for the leading exporting houses and that it was for tlio foreign ac count. Nothing in the shipping way was definitely reported , but as prices at tide water are down to a shipping basis , a re vival in the export trade is looked for. This was ono of the principal strengthening fac tors in the situation to-day. The news from the northwest was all bullish , so turns tlio movement of grain went , aad crop obser vers are watching the winter wheat fields anxiously. A tame corn market would fltly describe the day's business. Prices ruled easier , but thcro was irt > t much doing mid outside or ders were far from plentiful. The demand from shippers was fair , but prices are ap parently not low enough to tempt the load ing of vessels yot. There is a capacity of 5i.'CO,000 bushels hud up hero , and the own ers are asking 4 cents to Buffalo , including storage , until navigation opens in tlio spring. At Liverpool 4J.OOO bushels of American corn was received in the past week. Tlio amount on ocean passage decreased 240,000 bushels during tlio , week. There continues to bo n moderate export business , but It makes but a small hole in the year's crop. The Improvement In tlio weather removed tlin cause of yesterday's comparative ) firm ness , with a resulting preponderance of soi ling pressure , which Kept the market heavy throughout tlio greater part of tlio session. Tlio prices at tlio close were about , ' c lower than yesterday. Oats were moderately active during tlio early part of the day , with May declining % c , touching " 8c , and recovering i" n do- , Inter , Trading was not heavy In the aggregate , and was confined chiolly to the local account. It was believed that some long oats came out in line with the general weakness prevailing m the other cereals , though no soiling orders on country account woru visible. There was light trading in February nt about ! ! o below May , with Jun > uary nt liX'VuCi and December neglected. No. 2 oats in store were J o lower at U3c , with sales largely by sample. In provisions tliero was a little reaction from yesterday's ' depression. There was no particular activity in any line of trade , but as the old bear crowd showed no disposition to over-burden the market with offerings , a stronger feeling developed , in all depart ments Increased confidence was manifested , nml for pork the closing showed an advance for the duy of 5 ( < J7. ! < fo aud for short ribs of Lard wus unchanged , to 25tfo CHICAGO L-IVB STOCK.
