THE HKn.l The wheat market hud n very
\vcnk opening , but Its Inter phasu took on a
better color. The volume of trade was nbout
up to the recent average. Dealings were on
a moderate scale most of tlio time , but there
\vcro seasons of life nnd activity induced
very largely by tlio movements of tbo local
people In tbo direction of preparation for tbo
holidays , Thuro will bo no session of tbo
board until Wednesday of next week , and
scalpers do not , as n rule , like to go that long
with open Interest. The llrst trading In May
was around (1.07 % Tlio pltsuntimcnt leaned
toward the soft side of tlio market , and the
price gradually worked down to Sl.Of'tf. ' Not
much business was done at tbu Inside , bow-
over , and the market slowly recovered to
II 07Jjf. It ranged at f l.or v 1.07.jfj for quite
tv tin 10. A division was occasioned by the
receipt of news from Baltimore that liO.OOO
bushels of wheat had been brought there for
export to the United Kingdom , use being the
prlco Bivcn ; the prado belni } No. 2
red. Tlio ollect of this gossip was to
fitimulate the local shorts to cover ,
nnd tbo price was run up from 51.0726 to
t l.OSi . Considerable business was done at
; moro lit $1.0than at
$1.08) : ; howover. This was the livollust
bo day. The Improvement was
not held , the price working back to bulow
$1.08 , but tbo tone of the market was steady ,
nnd it closed n simile better than yesterday.
The market was not panicky at any stage ,
nnd except for the continued selling by
Ilutchlnson , the speculative offerings would
have been called unusually small ; neither
did there scorn to bo the slightest pressure of
lorig wheat. Trade in December nnd Juno
was very small. The llrst quotation for tbo
former was $1.0IV . The riiniru was $1.01 > ( )
1.0i.j ! , nnd the close tUK2 ? . January opened
ntlW'4 ( ' , sold up to $1.03 , nnd closed nt
f 1 & % . May rested at ? 1.0SJ4' , nnd July nt
tl.OTJtf. The takimrof n little wheat at Hal-
timoro for foreign shipment was the llrst
decided reminder served upon tuu local
crowd that tbo seaboard markets are gutting
down to tbo neighborhood of n shipping
basis. Later in the day Now York parties
advised their Chicago correspondents that
some cash wheat had been picked up
there for Antwerp , and Unit there
had been some buying of futures for for
eigners. The foreign uows was not signifi
cant. Very little is done abroad during the
holiday season , and the cables , almost with
out exception , rollout thu dullness. ICxcept a
llcry little Hurry in St. Louis , and a small
sized bulge in IJuluUi , nothing of note trans
pired at any of the western markets. The
panic In St. Louis was short-lived , nnd the
bulge in Dulutli Is Insignilic.int , because of
the fact that prices tlicro arc practically
nominal. The Minneapolis receipts tend to
conllnn the statement that the rush of north
western wheat is over. Tno speculative
sentiment up there is far from being unani
mous , but there , as here , it is noticeable that
most of tlio bearish hubbub is being uuulo by
the same parties who were roaring and un
reasoning bulls when the uniruct was lOo
higher.
The unmitigated dullness in the corn
market was tbo most pronounced feature of
to-day's trading , with a tendency towards
lower prices. The export clearances were
nbout the recent average. Liverpool
was quoted fractionally higher , nnd
tbo quantity of No. " in store hero was again
light , but the feeling among the local specu
lators was Inclined toward the bear side , and
on the declines the shorts were about the
only buyers. The opening was quiet nnd at
nbout yesterday's closing prices , but soon
became weak upon liberal offerings , nnd
May sold off to 8i3tXe ! , at which price
there was a good inquiry , which later caused
n reaction to U7o. at which it was offered at
the close , nnd which shows ft reduction of
only l-10c from yesterday's resting prico.
The amount of business done was small and
Vrincipally on local account.
In provisions the only interesting feature
was the break in December lard. Tlio corner
'parties in that article held the market quito
steady up almost to the close of business , at
f3.-10SS.-15 ( , but Just before the adjournment
it was sold freely by n broker supposed to
represent the Fnirbank intercut , and in a few *
minutes it declined to and ulosod nt f8.25.
This quotation was 15c under yesterday's
closing.
CiTTi.nThe history of the trade for the
week just closed will uo ronioinooroil as long
ns those interested live ; perhaps no such
amount of money was lost by shippers in one
week since Chicago was anything of a cattle
market , and no such run of cattle is on record
for the time nnd season. Think of 05,000
cattle for Christmas wcok. The outlook for
next week is no better certainly worse if
cnttlo come in any great numbers. Anent
the condition up to Friday night , a well
known shipper made the following humorous
remark : "Somo cattle bud etood in the pens
BO long that when the 3 o'clock wlustlo
sounded the hour to quit buying , they would
drop on their knees nnd quit J'or the day.
They were us well trained as liurmini's olo-
plmnts. " To-day's business was about one
of the most unsatisfactory patterns of
nny other day of the week , A salesman who
had prime stock , locked tlui gates , ordered
feed nnd water , und left them. Ho would
not , ns there was no use , offer his property.

i : LOCAL NBWS.
Plftln T .Ik to nu liii-si Mon.
Hov. T. , T. Mark-y last evening prrnchod
ono of his most practical and earnest ser
inons. St. Paul's churchshould , have been
crowded with business men to hear it. Mr.
Mackcy has evidently tired of having church
organizations looked upon by business men
as tolerated bogging institutions. Ho last
evening attempted to give logicnl reasons
why business men should contribute to the
support of church organizations. Ho boldly
took the position , held It by close reasoning ,
nnd Illustrated It clearly , to the effect that
business men were In duty bound to con
tribute to such organizations. The claim of
the church was n just ono nnd not n inoro
matter of charity or tolerance. Ho showed
it to bo the duty of business men , not only
because they owed certain things ns members
of the community , but nlso as individuals.
They should contribute because they nro of
n law-abiding nation. The government
couldn't bo maintained without the churches.
Men to be self-goveincd must bo under re
ligious inllucnces ,
They should contribute bcoauso they nro
business men. They need the protection
which religion nlouo can givo. Honesty
needed fostering , nnd in business circles It
was essential. Religion cultivated this es
sential , nnd should bo supported in this
work.
They should give as parents nnd fathers.
The sancity of the homo was. protected bv
religion.
They should contribute because they nro
mortals , and not beasts. They need the
churches , both in life and death.
Mr. Muckcv took occasion to speak very
painty in regard to funerals. During the six
years ho has been here ho has been called
upon to attend scores of funerals. Some
days ns mnn.v us four. Yet of nil those-
only llftecn were members of his
church. The great majority of these ser
vices were for those in no ways connected
with his church , unit not contributors
thereto. The same was true of other ministers -
tors , All wanted the services of some min
ister , or some church , in case of trouble or
sorrow. They ought to think of this when
discussing the question whether the churches
were mere beirgiug Institutions or not.
Mr. Mackoy scored sharply thnso who
gruinulc nt contributing to the chiircli. Any
business man who would consider fairly all
that the churches arc doing for the commu
nity , nnd for Individuals , and then refuse to
contribute- their support , could snfely beset
set down as not much of a business man. In
contributing there was , of course , the proviso
vise that a man was not in duty bound to
pay beyond Ids ability. It was not the
amount given , but the spirit back of it that
was the test.

A Day or I'.U'nMirc.
Although yesterday was somewhat cloudy ,
the streets presented an unusually lively ap
pearance for Sunday , as everybody aim his
entire family was abroad. The morning ser
vices at the various churches were largely
attended , and during the afternoon the
streets were ulivo with pleasure seekers and
promennders. Tlio many beautiful drives
through the suburbs were filled with car
riages , and all seemed disposed to nialte the
most of the delightful weather while it
lasted , The great hulk of the travel was
done on the motor line , and the cars were
taxed heavily to furnish transportation to all
who desired to ride. The travel seemed to
bo almost equally divided between the two
cities , as there were fully ns ninny of the
Omahans who visited the Hind's as tlicro
were Bluflltcs who crossed over to Nebraska
soil. The presence of so many strangers in
the city was extensively commented upon.
The mayor's Sunday closing order to the
saloon men was rigorously obeyed , out
wardly at least , and the police failed to Jind
any open doors , or to report any disobed
ience. Arrests were few , and the city gen
erally seemed to be on its best behavior.
