shows no further shrinkage. The touo of
the market was that of weakness. Ucyond
any question , u great lot of long wheat has
been unloaded during the last two or three
days , and it is equally true that largo lines
of shorts have been covered. This was
icirtlculnrly true to-day. Most of the largo
commission houses ilid a rattling business
hoth ways , They bud great , quantities of
long wheat to sell and gicat ; quantities of
abort wheat to buy in. There is no way of
determining whether any leading lines of
long wheat have been dumped or reduced ,
but the Impression prevails that there has
been a very general scaling down of the load
that loaders started out to carry. Many of
the greatest bulls made their money on the
bear side and they dislike very much sweat
ing through a deal when It promises to ire
against them oven teumonirily. Their
training and natural disposition leads them
to desire to shift the load upon other shoul
ders until a more advantageous time is pre
sented for resuming it. The consensus of
local opinion seems to bo that had it not
been for the support given the
market to-day by the shorts ,
prices would have gene materially
lower , though there seemed to bo solid in
vestment support at 51.07 ( 1.0751' . How lone
this support could have dammed the Hood ,
however , is n question of speculation that
must remain undetermined. The local senti
ment is still bearish , and bulls are not able to
obtain signal encouragement from the outside -
side at tills juncture.
Corn was stronger early to-day. The boom
in December corn in New York yesterday
was not forthcoming to disturb values , but
tlio promised receipts for to-day had agnia
been ovcr-calcnlatoil , and although there
wcro a few more cars of No. - corn in to
day's receipts , the amount coming forward of
the crade required to 1111 speculative con
tracts , continued to bo on a limited scale.
Exports wore larger , and the movement from
this point continues liberal , The Liverpool
market was steady , and American corn is ap
parently a necessity in the European market
this season to a limited extent. The-
early strength exhausted itself
when May corn reached ! ! 7J < jC.
The amount of offerings at that llguro ,
though in small lots , aggregated more than
could bo absorbed , and a gradual decline set
in , which was kept going in a desultory
way to the close of the market. Tlio busi
ness done was largely on local speculative
account , and the closing price shows all the
early 'advance to bo lost and a fraction in
addition thereto. May closed at 37@'l7l c ,
against 37 } ( R7 ; ! c yesterday , and proportionate
tionate declines occurred in the other
futures. ,
Provisions were slow. The day was re
lieved by the development of n squeeze in De
cember lard. That article appears to bo
under the control of Fairbauk and the Eng
lish houses , and though Armour and some of
the smaller packers sold pretty freely , the
demand from tlio shorts proved sutliclont to
advance It sharply. It opened ut $3.15 , sold
up to tSAS , and closed at ? 3.40 , or 27 c
higher than yesterday. In deliveries of lard
later than December , and also in other de
scriptions of the product , the movement fav
ored tlio selling interest. Higher average
prices prevailed , and at the adjournment pork
showed u not advance of Ji@.r > e , lard for
January , and later , of 5@10c , and short ribs
of 57JiC.

THIS IJniJ.J CATTLE There is nothing par
ticularly now in the market , only , perhaps ,
the feeling among the dealers was a shade
bluer than yesterday. Cattle have been
standing in pens that have been hero since
Tuesday , the owners hoping against hope ,
that there might be an improvement. A
ulcanmn that had S or 0 loads of cattle
hero to-day , could sell a load or so without
much difficulty , but ho had to ride over the
yards all the forenoon to get lookers for the
rest , and then , when night came , ho had
them yet , and there were scores of such Inci
dents. Prices on natives are the lowest on
record. The run of Toxnns was again light ,
and the price ruled strong , which
in turn again helpeu the cow
stock , especially prime cows and holf-
crs , but common and cunning cows
show little or no improvement. There is
nothing now in the stocker and feeder trade.
The demand is limited , and prices are ruin
ously low for sollcra. The receipts Include
2,400 Texas cuttle. Choice to extra beeves ,

brought n good deal of Investment buying to
the street in anticipation of tl e January div
idends. Now England nnd Tennessee coal
stocks wore also strong , the former being
boucht by Boston houses. The bears claim
that there has been free soiling of St. Paul
in the past few days by the so-called pool ,
nnd that the stock will gradually seek a
lower level. The loan crowd did not exhibit
as much activity this morning , anil stocks
were moro plentiful. Cotton seed oil was
weak and declined l' per cent during the
first hour. At noon the market was dull
and steady , and prices showed fractional
gains over the opening figures. Trading dur
ing the closing hour was not so active , but
the market exhibited unusual strength
throughout , and closing prices are about the

apparently , to the litfht receipts nnd the

be depended upan to remain steady until
after the holidays , unless the receipts con-
tlnuo liRht , and If tlicro should bo another
rush of caUlo It would bo almost t-ertnln to
result In a demoralized market. Tno cattle
hero to-day were about nil sold before the
close , and the trade , though by no menus
active , possessed more lifo than for the past
week or more , The packers paid $4.15 for u

bnueht peed , medium weight beoves. Cows
sold all the way from * l.GOiiJ2..T5 , the latter
price being paid for very Rood stuff. Feeders

higher than yesterday. The duality of the
hogs was not so good on an average , but
there were some very choice loads which
