Iluyden Bros Recruits. Last Saturday night the house of Sergeant lilvors , at Fort Omaha , was entered Dy some men , who made off with a few of his effects. Sunday night a few minutes after 12 , while effecting an entrance to the house of Cor poral Fox , Mrs. Fox was awakened and the thieves were disappointed. Shortly after 1 o'clock they entered the quarters of ex-Ser t- \ geant Baucrs , who Is now employed as mar ket man for the post. In the same quarters Is the mull man , Lazarus. Both men dally nro entrusted with sums of money by the ofllccrs for paying bills in town and for other iiurposcs. Bauer was awakened just as the Uilof was making for the door with his arms full of pntits nut ! coats. Ho rushed outside , but was met by two men , whom ho recog nised as soldiers , nnd who ordered him to re turn to the house or they would shoot. Bauer entered the house and searched for a revolver , which wns nlso gone. Lazarus dis covered that all his clothing had been carried off , and throwing on a bulTalo coat gave chase. Ho captured ono man hiding near the crnek back of the stables , and marched him to the guard house. The names of the perpetrators are Uurko and Murphy. The lat ter deserted yesterday morning , thus adding tlio crime of desertion to that of an attempted burglary. All the valuables were regained. Both men ure recruits. To Proven t Croup. True croup novcr comes without a warning ; a day or twq before tlio at tack the child becomes hoarse , nnd that Bymptom is soon followed by a peculiar , rough cough. The lawyers engaged In taking testimony in the legislative election contests , assembled ngaln yesterday morning at the city hall , but after a brief discussion of the status of the case , ajourncd until this morning. They have a largo number of witnesses yet to ox- urn inc. The republican contestants scorned quite elated with what has thus far been unearthed , and assort that tufllclont fraud has been developed in two precincts , to justify the votes being thrown out , which action would give the contestants their seats. The democratic contcslcos claim that no fraud , but a peed deal of Irregularity has been dug up , but not of such a character as to hazard their chances of occupying the seats to which they were elected. "It would bo an interest ing thing , " observed a gentleman who Is taking a deep interest in the contest "to the honest citizens of Omaha who bollnvo in an honest election and fair count , to know just what tlio democratic dollultlon of irregular- Hy Is. If non-compliance with every provi sion of the luw governing elections , if knocit- wg a Judge down and scattering , the ballots aboutjtuo room , and the promiscuous .voting of residents of other wards , Is but a venial offonso. to bo classed under the general head of Irregularities , It Is high time the legislature enlightened us upon the meaning of the words fraud and crime. The Un Itcd States grand Ju ry con vencd at 10 o'clock yesterday morning ami resumed their search for election frauds. A query was put to Assistant United States Attorney Patrick as to when ho thought a culmination of the Jury's labors would bo reached , and ho re plied that that was ono of the things that no fellow could find out. There are now sub- pronas out for forty additional witnesses , ami many moro than these nro apt to bo called unless something matorl.il is unexpectedly devclopcdwhlch is very likely to occur ut any moment That the examinations nro growing more and moro Interesting Is very evident , ns the jurors , when they occasionally step forth into the corridor for n moment's exer cise , look very wlso and knowing , and it is given out that several true bills will bo re turned. County Clerk Roche was subjected to a long and critical examination yesterday morning , but Just the nature of the inquiries npplled to him could not be ascertained , It has been ascertained that the action ol Superintendent Miihouoy , of the poor farm , in voting some twenty-five or thirty Inmates of that institution at the presidential election , is being most soarohingly nnd rigIdly - Idly Inquired into. Authorities assort that these votes were clearly illcg.il , nnd their as sertions are nuuti * good by the fact that all of these thirty paupers who got In their votes for Cleveland ut the Seventh ward jwlls voro repeated nt the late city election. The Judges and clerks of election nt the Seventh ward , together with u largo number of inter ested citizens , nro yet to appear before the jury. Alioiit HorscH. The general freight agents and the gen eral western freight agents of the various railway systems reaching this city are laborIng - Ing under n diflleulty in connection with the standard in freight rates. Yesterday the eastbound - bound rates between Chicago and the sea board went into effect. This moans an ad vance In rates on all lines in the eastern pools. The rates on giuln have been ad vanced to 25 cents per 100 between Chicago and New York. Previous to this agreement being reached the grain rate * between Mississippi river points and New York was only 23 cents. The rate between the latter points , and which went into effect this morn ing , Is 29 cents , showing u direct increase of 0 cents. But aside from this there is nn un easiness among the tralllu managers hero , nnd also among these of eastern rends , nrls- itiK out of the probability of the agreement not being lived up to by all tlio roads. Should such a movement DO mudo in the latter instance by an\f of the roads , the trufllu managers hero state that the rates would again brcomc feverish , and Unit only contract rates could bo rclicil upon by the shipper. "In this instance , " said a well-known freight agent , "tho buyer and shipper are placed In u peculiar predicament , for the reason that the buyer may liguro on existing rates , and nlso the shipper liguro the same w.iy ; the rates nro not under classifica tion , and may be advanced or decreased nt any period , oven within nu hour's time. It is also stated tiuit the Western roads have been convoying n vast amount of products , such as grain , that have been consicned to the seaboard on the east during the period that the low rates have been in existence , and that the advance now made will have a tendency to lessen the western tralllc for the present. Yesterday a circular reached this city from Charles L. Shaw , 'chairman of the Central Traffic association , instructing the shipments made under the old rates that terminated this morning to be branded : "In transit prior to December 17. " The rates from Omaha to the seaboard in the cast and from that point to Omaha have been generally advanced on the common products ( ! cents per hundred pounds in con sequence of this transaction. A Bic Scheme. For nearly ono week the heads ot depart ments , of the roads centering in Omaha have been iu Chicago in attendance at a mooting called for the purpose of reorganizing the Colorado and Utah general trafllo associa tion. Should thia bo brought about it will take in the territory be tween Utah and the Mississippi river , and in which n standard classitlcatton of rates on the passenger and freight traflle will prevail upon all railroads traversing this territory. An organisation of this kind for merly existed , but was broken by the Bur lington cutting rates westward. Thus far but little nus been accomplished at the Chicago cage meeting. AssUtant General Manager Mellon , of the Union Pacific , who returned yesterday , and who has represented his road at the meeting , stated that thus far but little had been accomplished , nnd that the meeting had adjourned to re-assemble Wed nesday next. When asked concerning the trouble between the contracting parties ho intimated that in order to bring about an agreement iron-clad rules must prevail. It Is generally conceded that the combination Is being formed to thwart the Inter-state co in in or oo law , nnd that ns soon as nn agree ment Is reached western freight and passen ger rates will bo materially advanced. W. H. Garrntt , formerly division freight agent of the Missouri Pacltie at Atchison , Kan. , hns accepted u position in the general trnfllc department of the Union Pacillo and entered upon his duties yesterday morning. It has , however , transpired since the super- ntcndcnt vacated his ofllco , that they were discharged for personal reasons , and In con sequence weraremstnted by Superintendent Rcsscgulo Saturday. General Superintendent Dickinson and Division Superintendent Rcsseguio of the Union Pacillo started' a special train this morning on a tour of inspection of the Ne braska division of that system. Other sec tions of the road will bo visited before their return. The trip is being made with a view of obtaining a knowledge of the general con- lltlon of tlio road , the same to bo embodied n the annual report of the general superin tendent now being compiled. J.
