[ Special Telegram to THK Uinl The wheat market Jhold fairly steady to-day , and whllo fluctuations In prices were frequent , tliey wcro within nar row limits , the extreme range covered hy May property during the session bolnj ; only nbout I'jfc. Uuslncss is bselnnlng to partake - take of a holiday chnruutcr , and to-day'o inovomcnt wni not only under the average , but almost entirely local. The orders re ceived by tlio commission houses wcro smaller than they have bean for several days past. Even the larger class of operator * up- pcnrcd to bo doing Httlo other than n scalpIng - Ing btisiiioii , nnd as thcro was nothing sen sational In .ho way ol outside news , the session was for the most pirt u t.xmta and spiritless one. The increase in the visible supply was only about half the quantity tliown for the corrcsuondlnf ; period in lb 7 , but It proved to bo a little tnoro than ex pected nnd had n depressing inllucncoon values after the secretary's figures wcro lasted. At the opening traitors botrun guessing thoprobablo increase at about i5 > , l)00 ) bush els , nnd later they whittled their estimates down to WKJ.OJO bushels. The actual incrcaso wns liT5OJ , ( bushels. As the Now York ex change closc.'d two hours before ours , on Saturday , the late stientjth developed hero then was not felt by that marKct until this morning ; and the opening there was lo higher. The later temlcncy , In sympathy with the weakness developed hero , was downward , and St. Louis \yas also reported weak and HomoWlmt lower. Onluth and the northwest weic the strongest of nil the domestic mestic- markets to-day. The warmer weather , with rains In the northwest , Is variously in terpreted us favorable news by Doth sides. There Is talk of the drouth beln ended by rain , but this is offset by the foms of a cold wave coming and iloinu ; dama o in winter wheat sections to the exposed nnd ovcrmolsl growing ciop. In the pit Schwartz & Dupco wore credited with thuhirgcsl selling to-day liciim was also a free seller , atul 4hls offer ings of round lots had a good dqnl to do with tlio early weakness. It wns strongly sus pected that both Kram nnd Hutehinson wore slugging again , in order to add to their lines on the long side , at lower prices. While Maglnu , otic of Hutch- IIIBOII'H brokers , was offering fiO,0 ( > 0 bushel lots for sale In one part of the pit , other brokers forllutchinson wore buying , quietly , nil they could get. Koctio covered some short wheat , it was said , and Hall , Mitchell , 13axter and others bought considerable wheat. Milminc , Hodman & Co. were sell ers. Fluctuations in prices , as previously stated , wcro frequent , but within a narrow range. Initial trades in Jluv were at $1f \ \ , or % o above Satiuday's closing. The mur- ket then touched Jl.lPiT. solJ off to § 1.1U , up to $1. UK. down to $1.11 , then reautcd to fl.llM3l.lIJ4. broKe lo $10 \ } ( , and between Its and 1 o'clock sec-s.iwcd back and forth between $1.11)3 ) * nnd $1.11. At the filial close tl.lO i was bhl , being a net decline for the day of * { ( it ' , , e. The wtatlier was damp. Receipts of corn wcro nbout ! ! 0 cars under Saturday's estimates nnd the inspection returns showed the usual small proportion of No. 2 corn in the day's receipts , being onlv 10 per cent of the total. The heaviness so long characteristic of the market was Intensified to-day , both in the demand for spot and futures , and prices reached the lowest point yet touched. The liberal export movement and the decrease in the visible supply of SIU.OOO bushels , wcro no support to it. In view of the quantities , which the present prices are sure to bring out of the fanner's haiuts , there is no news considered strong enough to offset that main point , and it holds speculative sentiment to the bear side. The business was chielly local and of a scalping character. There was a good demand for May at ST o and January at Sic , but it subsided In n great measure where the offerings were found to bo mor6 liberal than expected. From New Orleans there were cleared 02,000 bushels on Saturday , 'iho early dealings in the speculative branch of business were at the highest figure , but in the cash market the opening was lower than the closing price on com to go into store. January corn closed at ! ! 3Xo after selling l-10c under that price nnd is } { c lower at tlio close than at the corresponding tlmo on Saturday , and May closing at SOJ < @ 3 c is 3-lCo under Sat urday's Html quotation. t In provisions the week opened with the bear element In control. Packers nnd their followers handled the market to suit themselves , nnd found no trouble in continuing the dictation they have lately practiced. They mot , in tact , with little or no opposition , nnd barring the de mand from shorts anxious to cover contracts , the trade had practically no support. It was a boar day from the start , and based on Sat urday's closings , pork at the adjournment showed n decline of 2S)4@Styc , lard for Jan uary and later delivery 5c , und short ribs CHICAGO ijlVK STOCK CIIIOAOO , Dec. 17. [ Special Telegram to TUB Hun. ) CATI'LK Ono can hardly convoy to a distant reader the dismay of salesman and shipper , when It was announced that the unseasonable run of 10,000 c.ittlo was on the market and had to bo disposed of and "that too , " as a salesman remarked , on the "Hist day of turkey wflok , " Just why shippers ecnt this enormous number to market , with facts and conditions before them , it is im possible to toll , but the number was there " nnd had to bo made away with" , one way or another , There was but.littlo business tran sacted until late in the day , and the llrst ales of ilia ordinary run of fat cattle showed a decline of 20@5c , and common sorts , per haps , sold at a greater reduction. Texas con tributed nearly 'JOOcars.ors.iy about 4,000and among them were many good ours. This , as every one knows , hml a depressing effect on common nutlvo and cow stock , which In turn sold down again to nbout the lowest prices yet recorded. Dressed beef men were entirely indifferent , caring but litlo whether they wore in or out of the market. Shippers were also indifferent. Of course they wanted a few wl.cn they could gat them at their own offers. Everything seemed ncamst the seller to-day. Thcro was practically no demand for Christmas steers , and but few of such on the market. Thcro was literally no demand for stackers or feeders , not oven from yard speculators. Of late the cattle market has been In such unsatisfactory condition on so many days that it is hard to imagine it any worse , but to-day it was even n little worse than it has been un > day jet. There was a liberal sui > - ply of beef cattle In the yards and nome of them were good enough to bo called Christ inas cattle , but the market was badly demor alized. The reports from eastern markets were so bad that it could not result In any thing but n heavy depression in prices hero. The trade in beef cattle was all tlio way from 10a'0c ( lower and very dull. It was hard work even to get "a buyer to look ut cattle. In the eo\v market the supply was not very grout and the buyers showed more disposition to trade , nnd prices were better maintained. They sold at n wide range , all the way from $1.25 to 3.25 , the latter being paid for a bunch of choice corn-fed Hay State cows A few loads of western feeders were offeied. but Uiere was not much trading In that kitid of stoi-k , nlthough theio wcro sov- era ! would-be buyers in the jards , As usual on Monday the receipts wcro llpht nnd the market advanced " > c on heavy hogs and nbout 10c on light and common mixed. The trade was active mid the pens cleared early in the day. The hogs wcio not very good , nnd there was not n prime heavy load'on sale , s > o that the top was not SD high ns on Saturday. Now York Times : The At-ion Sing iny society of Nownvk hold a ichoarbiil at Thoimib A. Edison'srebt Oriinyo luboriitorv recently and bUng to the phonograph. Behind the conductor , Frank Van der Stuckon , were three bipr funnels , respectively nineteen , ninoand five feet loiitf , leading to is many phon ographs. Mr. Wangeinann and three other assistants adjusted the inbtru- monts , Mr. Edison being only a specta tor and listener. The phonographs , by means of branched ear tubes , repeated the concert nftqrvvnrds to 150 people "in blocks of live. " This was the lirst experiment with so largo a chorus , ( sixty-live men ) and the result was very batibfactory. The vocal parts were reproduced very distinctly indeed , and every effect of light and shade seemed as ellcctivc as when given un der Mr. Van der Stucken's direction. Ever since the more or Jess "per fected" phonograph was given to the world last spring experiments have been kept up at the laboratory. A sub stance more durable than wax has been found for the record cylinders. Now , the instrument is so sensitive thut any gasp or yawn is recorded. It will dis tinguish between the breathing of a healthy man and a consumptive and record the beating of the heart. One of the little wax cylinders details an interview between two overs , and persons of experience and yesterday that the kisses were re produced with tantalizing accuracy and fervor. The instrument was taken to a Thomas concert the other night , and now one may hear an entire concerto , ( withJosolfy at the piano. ) Posbihld facilities are thus afforded for stealing a now opera or for transmitting instruc tions as to the interpretation of music and dialogue. Already Miss Farron and Mr. Leslie of the London Gaiety troupe have sung suecial songs to the instrument , and the "phonograms" liuvo been mailed to the manager of the London theater at his direction. The ear tube is not an indispensable adjunct to the phonograph. The bound is trans mitted through u 12-inch funnel so loudly that a grand piano may he played in duet with it. It provided mubic for a private dancing party in London not long ago. One word : bno stop may make or mar one's whole future.
