fnct , nt the outside. Tlioro wns nothing In
the general situation to Induce any further
speculative short selling to-day. That sort
of news , whlt'h wns plentiful jcstcrduy , was
not fed by fresh fuel. On the contrary the
feeling favored the steadying up of values.
Trading was most netlvo earlv mid late , the
central part of the session belnu very < ju let.
The market opened nt tl.10'for May , *

to tl.OlK@l.O ! ; ! > ? 4' , up to tl.lOig1 , oft to ( l.K ( > X ,
and up sharply to ahove (1. 11. As before
stated scalpers were banking on a break , nnd
when tlic session drew towards its close unit
the break did not materialize , tlmy ran
for cover , hoisting the market ns indicated.
The highest price touched for May
was tl.ll'j , , and the close wns il.lOX < 3l > H >
December opened ut $1.04 V. ranged to fl.O.'iV
C&iibiJX , and closed at the outside. January
opened at tl.O.X' l.Otl'i' ' , nnd closed at
tl.00'4. ' The early feature was thn heavy
buving by Hnxtcr. 1'oole , Mitchell and
others were also good buyers on the initial
decline , mid Hutclilnson'H brokers picked up
what they could without disturbing values.
Hutchlnson bus been nstcadybuycrof wheat
nil the week , which has given nso to a story
that the bull leaders Iiavo kept out of the
market to let him cnvnr Ins line of wheat , on
the assumption that he Is clearing up his
trade prcpaiatory to uniting the board lor a
time. Gossips bolster up this story by the
further statement that Hutchtnson Is the
only man the b ill leaders are afraid of , and
that they are very wiUing to get rid of him
by letting him out without loss. Tills story
is given for what It is worth. No affidavits
po with it , and our. Fe.iuers are at liberty to
believe as much or ns little of it as
they may elect. The Ic rally that
distinguished the last half hour of business
was helped along by the report that the bull
leaders had at length combined and put their
deal In the hands of Itcain. Tills Is another
Btory that Is dcllcicnt in "body , " and ranks
head of " talcs. " It
under the "fairy fright
ened the scalpers who were short , just the
same and accelerated their movement Into
camp. Cables wore rather easier In tone
and llicro has bi'nn a halt in the farting ufT
in the movement of wheat in the northwest.
Estimates for Monday ( two days ) at Minne
apolis arc 500 cars. Nevertheless , with the
total stocks of contract wheat in the west ,
but 10,000,000 bushels nnd the receipts
merely nominal everywhere , except in. Min
neapolis , the bulls do not feel that they have
any occasion for alarm. They are not
alarmed in point of fact.
Thu receipts of corn were as heavy , as
yesterday's estimate had foreshadowed , and
that of itsulf was an argument on the boar
Bfile. Tlio weather being mild mid wet ,

view of the small quantity of No. - now.
coming forward , bo used as 11 lover"
by the bull ; , , but the speculative sentiment
appeared to be strongest on the bear sido.
The early weakness in wheat kept down
speculation for u rise in corn. The principal
buyers were again said to be the shorts. Tlio
receipts for Monday Were estimated at ( UO
cars , which are , however , inclusive of Sun
day's ' inspection. In to-day's inspection
thcro worn only 23 cars of No. . From four
ports yesterday there wore exports ot 318,000
bushels , but Liverpool was quoted lower in
to-day's ' dispatches. There were consider
able sales of May corn at 37I e by prominent
operators , but the price did not go below
that llguro. Speculators , begin to express
the opinion quito generally , that tyices are
low. Fluctuations were very narrow , but a
slight reduction In price was again the re
sult of the day's business , January closing
at l } c , February at : ! 4 } @ : ! 4 > c , and May at
87Vo all showing fractional declines from
yesterday's closing figures.
In provisions , yesterday , the bearish move
ment wns continued. Unexpectedly largo ar
rivals of'hog , coupled with the anticipated
increased receipts this coining week , made
the element favoring lower prices unusually
Independent. The market for a consider
able portion of the morning was overloaded
with speculative offerings , and before any re
covery occurred pork showed n break from
yesterday's closings of 'J7 ! @JOc , lard of 12 >
@ 15c and short ribs of 10c. During the hist
hour the bears , however , became more con
servative nnd some of the ground lost was
regained. Still the depression suffcreil. for
the day was quite liberal , amounting in work
to 20@22jC | , in lard for January and later
deliveries to 7) < j@10i ! and in short ribs to 5CiO

No\v \ York Times : Nlncly-six pieces
of uorecloemcil nnd uaoluhnocl bn ngo
were sold nt auction in the ofllco o ( the
Intornntinnnl hotel. In Turk How , the
other inorninir. It wns n sorry loukinc
collection of bap- ? , valises and small
trunks. A largo jnoportion of tlio
stull had been \\lng \ nbuut the storerooms -
rooms of the hotel for several your * , and
much of it was nioth-eaten and dilapi
dated. It was all bought 5n nt ridicu
lously low prices , rangiii } , ' fromufew
cents to a dollar , by the proprietors of
the house. Only one of the
pieces. a small sachel , was
opened. U contained n few
worn toilet articles which might once
have been of good qualify , and n bundle
of letters. The letters were neatly tied
with ribbon , nnd although they wore
yellow anil tlmc-stnlned , the writing
was still legible. When opened , they
revealed -omance ot real life. Part
of the letters were from a Philadelphia
woman , evidently possessed of much re-
llncmcnt and an excellent education , tea
a gentleman in Wnshlngton. The re
plies wore In a strong , mascullnp style
of penmanship. Tlioy were recriminat
ing letters showing the unhappy lot of
the lovers. The story told by tnem was
one of dmiblo abandonment , the woman
having left her husband lot * the suko of
the mun who , in turn , for
her sake , had deserted his wife
nnd children. Then the man had
repented , nnd had declared his inten
tion of repairing the wrong ho had com
mitted by returning to his family. This
placed tlio woman in an unfortunate po
sition , nnil she threatened to commit
dire and dreadful deeds if ho carried
out his declared Intention. Her letters
alternately pleaded anil upbraided ,
while his maintained a tone indicating
that his repentance was sincere and his
purpose to ibforin unalterable. For a
period of several months the corre
spondence continued in this strain , and
finally a tear-stained letter from the
uoinan told of her heart being broken.
She requested the return of all her let
ters , and bade farewell forever lo the
man she had loved not wisely but too
well.

American Mngaxino : In this Parisian
world of fashionable formulas the first
lesson in the science of life is that ot
etiquette , that the dead things of vul
garity may bo wrapped in a shroud of
politeness , form and custom. The second
end lust-on is given when the nereep-
tions are so developed as to command
and control the mystery of illusion ,
which is the supernal art in this
sphinx-HK'o domain of exclusive cus
toms and antiquated formulas.
The cllorts of a whole life
time are devoted to this study ,
which , once begun , noycr ends.
The next lesson is in discretion or tact ,
which brings tlio ambitious aspirant
into a universal Held of social ell'ect and
action. And thus it is that the basie
principles of fashionable life arc
formed , which render the student of
human nature capable of grappling
with the most entangled forms of eti
quette , thu most mystical methods of
illusion , and the mo'st subtle devices of
diplomats. Yet in thcscj iln-ee require
ments the essence of each is woven into
the other in till their varied rules ,
modes of application , and hypo
critical dissimulation. Etiquette
is the very foundation of
policy , and illusion is its framework ;
yet the mystcrv of illusion belongs moio
to the female mind , for.the physiologi
cal fascination of this strange inllucnce
only finds its proper element in the en
dowments of. feminine grace and bril
liancy. To know how to entertain a
dinner party , how to begin a soiree
musicale , how' to receiyo one's enemy
with uncompromising sang froid , how
to rentier a company of antipathic in
dividuals at once comfortable in spirit
nnd smooth of tongue , belongs to tact
and etiquette ; but n line sense of per
ception is required to comprehend it.
