There Is a good demand from borrowers , which is met by the banks tit the ruling rates , 8 to 10 per cent. The national banks have been called upon uy the comptroller ot the currency for n statement of. their condition at the doceof business December 12. The general Jobbing trade is not mrticu- larly active except In holiday goods , M the warm , open weather prevailing has prevented n demand for woolen goods , hats and caps , boots and shoes , and coal , though It has ma terially aided ttio building trades and caused increased activity in lumber mid hardware. Prices have ruled somewhat higher for su gars and coffees , mid tminllhi rope has been boosted about , * c per pound by the trust corner. Collections nr < j fair , if not irood , and in Rome lines of trade they tire said to bo very good , though the city docs not do so well In this respect na tlu country. There have been u number of failures throughout the state the past woclc , und credit men and collectors have been qulto bimy. This is to bo expected at this season , when the weak traders are weighed and closed out. The failures In the United States for the week pait were ' 'GS and in Canada 3o , a total of 303 ; against ( IC'5 last week , TltADK NOl'KS. Salt is gradually becoming firmer under the trust manipulation. The price abroad for good brands previous to the formation of the combination was 2Ss per ton , but since then it has been advanced to 2s ! ) , and n further rise of 5s is said to bo on the pro gramme for January. The supply of Liver pool snlt In this country Is small. Domestic salt , which recently advanced 5e per bbl , is plenty , but butter makers in many Instances prefer the foreign article. The value of the foreign merchandise im portations in New York last month , as given by the Commercial Bulletin , was i'32- 877,1)55 ) , against JSS.HOO.SSO in November , 18S7. The value of merchandise ex ported was $25,5 tOr > , " I In November , 19SS. and $23,107,4:15 : In November , 1SS7. The out ward movement of treasure the past month exceeded the importations of the same by f " > , rM3ri2i ! , In November last year the excess of treasure shipments w.i1 * only $20' ) , 111. The falling off in impoitiitlons pccurrcd mainly in dutiable merchandise , with iron and steel productions and textile 'fabrics llguring prominently , 'i'ho decline in exports of iiKTclmiidiso was largely In food products anrl petroleum. * It is stated that the commissioner of In ternal revenue adheres to the expressed opinion that the use of adulterant in making or coloring butter subjects the product to the tax imposed by the oleomargarine law. C'olTco is very bullish and the last sharp advance is well maintained. The general es timate of the present crop is between 11,000- 000 and < vr > l)0OOJ ) bags , whicli ii n very de cided reduction from the SfjOJLOO estimate iniulo at the beginning of the year. The next crop is now estimated at between 8,500- 000 and 4,000.000 bags. Europe bus led the advance , and her prices are now materially higher than ours. Coffee has been steadily advancing for nearly a year , but the recent nlmrp advance is tliD direct outcome of reports - - ports of serious damage by unfavorable weather both to the present and growing Brazil crops , assisted by speculative manipu lations. Carbon oil is sollingnctivcly nt current prices , the supply and prices being regulated by the t'-tist. Tlio amount of crude oil now in tank In the Pennsylvania oil region is 21,000,1100 bbls , n reduction within a year of 10,200.000 bbls , j\s showing a result of the shut-down [ roliey it is slated that the value of the oil held in stock November 1 , 1S87 , was $ UO,000,000. , , Vftor disposlngof 10,200,000 bbls at an increased price the remaining stocks arc still worth -1 0,000 , 000. OMAHA LiIVK STOOIi. Cattlo. Saturday , Dec. 15 , 1S93. There was a somewhat better feeling prov ident in the market for the most desirable kinds of bcof cuttle , but the market for com mon and half fat stuff is still In a very un satisfactory condition. Considerably over 5,000 bogs were on sale to-day , Including those In the hands of specu lators. The market cm an average was lOc lower , and although salesmen were a little blow to part with their holdings , tlio Irado was fairly active and the pens cleared by midday. [ Special Telegram to TUB HII : : . ] The wheat market was dull to- iiny. Tlio scalping crowd WAS disposed to play for the usual Saturday Mump , but they did not go too , fur. Tlio market did not act to suit them. In short , the slump did not come as per programme , prices at the close being , ° 4C higher than the opening ; resting In fact , at the outsVle. There was nothing In the general situation to Iiiduco any further speculative short selling to-day. That sort of news , which wns plentiful yesterday , was not fed by fresh fuel. On the contrary tiio fooling favored the steadying up of values. Trading wns most active early and late , the central part of the session being very < iuict , The market opened nt Sl,10 > .j' for May , ranged to $1.10)4 ) , oft to $1.09 ; , up ' { e , back to M.oo.'tfSt.o'.iif ' , up to $ i.io' off to S1.09J& and up sharply to above $1.11. As before stated scalpers wcro banking on a break , and when the session drew towards Its close unit the break did not materialize , they ran for cover , hoisting the marltet as Indicated. The highest prlco touched for May was Sl.ll1 * , anil the close was $1.10X ( < < 11.11. December opened atjl.04 , ranged to $1.0.V4' @l.0i\t.f , and closed at the outside. January opened at $1.0Sl @l.NI4i ( | and closed at Sl.OO'j. The early feuturo was the heavy buying by Haxter. I'oolo , Mitchell anil others wcro also good buyers on the initial decline , and Hutchinson's brokers picked up what they could without disturbing values. llutchinson has been a steady buyer o.f wheat ( ill Urn week , which has given rise to a story that the bull leaders have kept out of the market to let him cover his line of wheat , on the assumption that he is clearing up his trade preparatory to milting the board for a time. Gossips bolster up this story by "the further statement that ilutchlnson is the only man the b.Ul leaders are nfnild of , and that they are very willing to get rid of him by letting him out without loss. This story Is given for wlmt it is worth. No uulduvits go with it , and our readers are at liberty to believe as much or as little of it as they nmv elect. The Ic rally tliat distinguished the last half hour of business was helped along by the report that the bull leaders had at length combined and put their deal in the hands of Ream. This is another story that is deficient in "body , " and ranks under the head of "fairy tales. " It fright ened the scalpers who wcro abort , just the same and accelerated their movement into camp. Cables were rather easier in tone and there has been a halt in the falling off in the movement of wheat in the northwest. Estimates for Monday { two days ) at JUimie- npolis are 500 ears. Nevertheless , with the total stocks of contract wheat in the west , but 10,000,000 bushels and the receipts merely nominal everywhere , except in Min neapolis , the bulls do not feel that they have any occasion for alarm. They are not alarmed in point of fact. Tlio receipts of corn wcro as heavy , as yesterday's estimate had foreshadowed , and tlmtofitsnlf was an argument on the bear side. The weather being mild und wet , would under ordinary circumstances , and in view of the small quantity of No. 2 now coming forward , . - bo used as a lever by the bulls , but ihe speculative sentiment appeared to be strongest on the bear side. The early weakness , in wheat kept down speculation for a rise ia corn. The principal buyers were again said to be the , shorts. The receipts for Monday wore estimated at 020 cars , which are , however , inclusive of Sun day's inspection. It ? to-duy's inspection there were only 23 cars'of No. 2. From four ports yesterday there were exports ot 318,000 bushels , but Liverpool was quoted lower ia to-day's ' dispatches. There were consider able sales of May corn at Wi'gc by prominent operators , but the price did not go below that ilgurc. Speculators begin to express the opinion quite generally , that prices are low. Fluctuations were very narrow , but a slight reduction in price was again the re sult of the day's business , January closing at : M'c ( , February nti4J : < 0i4 : c , and May at 7 c all showing fractional declines from yesterday's closing figures. In provisions , yesterday , the bearish move ment was continued. Unexpectedly largo ar rivals of hogs , coupled with the anticipated increased receipts this coming week , made the clement favoring lower prices unusually independent. The market for if consider able portion of the morning was overloaded with speculative offerings , und before any re covery occurred pork showed a break from yesterday's ' closings of 2T @ 30c , lard of 12 > tf @ 15e and short rib * of. lOc. During the last hour the bears , however , became moro con servative and some of the ground lost was regained. The country bankers are also asking for increased Hues of rediscounts , and the indications arc favor able for thu incre.tsing nbiorpthm of monoi' nnd a corresponding flrmncsa of interest rates , Call and thirty day loans were made at C > @ OJjj per cent , and time loans at iJ ! < f per cent for gilt edged to good business paper made by city borrowers , and 7Q2S per cent for fuir city and choice outside paper , although as high as II per cent was paid on the street by grain dealers in the northwest , mid by west ern cattle and hog feeders. Thorp is consid erable lumber paper flouting around , ns oper ators In that line inro preparing for their winter's work , and having largo stocks of lumber on hand they must borrow to meet current wants. The built of their paper pays 7 per cent , but that rate is occasionally ex ceeded. Collection * are niportcd good , ami trade generally in a healthy condition. A weak and declining tendency was noted in ' 'G ranger" stocks. Tlio previous weolt was increased by the continual cutting of western passenger rates bctwoen Chicago und Missouri river points ; also bv the reduction In dressed beef and live stock rates from the Missouri river , by the Alton road. The rofus.il of the latter to enter Into any agreement to rcttore rates , made the situation worse and discouraged liohlord. Liquidation was moru thorough nnd prices declined i ! : l ) . | points , Missouri Paclllu and Atchison * being the leaders. The Missouri 1'a- cltlo direiilors declared a dividend of 1 pur cent , but it haU no apparent effect on the umrHot , as London sold stocks freely , and toward thu closu the short Interest bu- ciuno large. This selling , coupled with the taking of $ tUO'J , < KM ) for Kuropo , tended to dcmorallzn the ontlro active list. Vanilor * bills were attacked , and L.iku Shore declined 2 points , while western stocks wcro demoral ized , "coalers1' ' especially. IJelawaro & Hud- BO 1 1 were stronger and higher. A good short interest , b.lJ been created , and strong parties took hold of it , as it was crcd.tcd with earn ing about 7 per cent. Tlmro being compara tively lit tie of the block on thu btrc-et , the price was suddenly advanced 10 , ' points. A decline of ! 1 points followed , but the dupro * elation did not hold , p\rtoC : the decline being regained toward the closo. Western Union remained steady , as its earnings are largo and tlio company bus a liberal surplus. Cht cage gas trust certificates mid bomln hnvo bocn listed , but the transactions were small , owing 10 the largo interest taken in oilier securities. The aggregate sales on the Novt York stock exchange lor the week wcra lii7Sii ! ! : snares. There bus been no particular activity IA the produce markets , and trade In general appears to bo slacking us the Holidays approach preach , the usual cousu of the market at this season of the year. No important features wore developed , especially in the speculative branch of the trade , and the bulk of the bus- ness was credited mainly to tlio operators lu larger marKots. Money is working closer , and borrowers are unable to noeuro nil the assistance they require , unless they nro will ing to meet the views of bankers regarding timo' and intero.st * rates. Fuetuations were conllned within compur.itivoly narrow ranges , and the closing llgurerf show a slight appreciation , compared with thOMi current early in the week. The operators , as u rule , nro transferring their contracts ahead as much as possible , ami May delivery is now the center of attraction in nearly all the markets provisions aa well as grain. The receipts of wain were moder ately well maintained at nearly all the west ern markets , and thu shipments to the sca- board were quite liberal , as shippcra wcro Bonding their property forward to talto nd- vauttt'/o of the present rnto of freights. i The export movement is still conllurd to limited quantities , excepting of corn and le.iding iir.ieles of hog products. ' .Supplies of leading grains "re gradually enlarging , hut stocks of provisions arc ac cumulating slowly. Seeds wore inclined to quietness , with prices favoring t'io ' buying interest. Provisions were somewhat unsettled and. prices liuftuntcd considerably , ruled lower early and then closed higher again. Arrivals of livestock have been moderately free , especially of cattle and sheep , thougli the .supply of hogs was homawhat under the general expectations. The returns from tha principal packing points In thu west indicata that the falling off in tlio bog supply is general - oral , and the deficiency in the aggregate ; packing to duto is about six hundred and thirty thousand hogs , compared with returns of lust season to dale.
