Tnr. Hci : . ] The wheat market opened nbout
where it left off Saturday , .with unlcs of
May at (1.00. On the report , tliat S'.i'J rnrs
wcro received ut Minneapolis , the tnnrkct
t > relic ! < i Mitygotnptu { I.OS ) ; . This Min
neapolis news kept eomlnt : forward In differ-
cnt forms through thn forenoon. Ono of the
phases was the stiilcincnl that the number
of cars on sldo tracks ivt Minneapolis was
8f , > 00. This was subsequently corrected
down to 1,800 cars , including to-dav'o blK re
ceipts , nnd to-morrow's oatiuuto was 3.10
curs. The bin movement In northwest and
tlm non-fulllllmcnt of the predictions of n
failing off , Is 0110 of the strongest cards the
bears have left , and they are playing it for
its full value. The largo receipts at Mimic-
ttKjlls | have a decidedly illsrourngliig np-
ponranco. Information on the bAt of
authority , that back country elevator
stocks of spring wheat nro very
mail , and that farmers' deliveries of spring
wheat nro at least one-half smaller than they
wore u year ago , Is received skeptically , as
the further statement that u very largo pro
portion of the property tlmt is coming for
ward Is from country elevators , the wiping
out of carrying charges making it to the
owners' advantage to deliver It on Ueccin-
ber contracts. These things , which are
Mated as facts by wall informed and truth
ful people , are regarded with doubt by
blackboard students , who will not look be
yond the table of current receipts and ship
ments. For that reason the crowd took
kindly to the sellliiR side of the inarlcol early ,
especially as statisticians had given it out
that 1,000,000 , bushels increase In the visible
supply might bo expected. As stocks came
In , however , the statisticians wcro forced to
modify their estimates and the market har
dened considerably. In the meantime , May
gradually moved up to $ l.09'4. ' It sold
off to * 1.08"j , and up again to Jl.OO'aC'S '
1.09 % off again to fl.i-OJi , , up to 51.00.U ,
and then during the last hour it boomed to
* J.10 % , closing at fl.lUK. with January
quoted at ? 1.)5 ( ) > - ; . The posting of the visible
supply , showing the total stocks to be30,570-
OOU bushels , mi Increuso of 4SS.OOO Imshols ,
was the main cause ol the recovery of prices
from the bottom , and of the mid-session
steadiness. Then the Into cables came In
firmer , and an advance in Liverpool was
quoted. About half past 1" o'clock Minne
apolis wired tlmt u round lot of flour had
been sold there for London account at a
shilling advance. The news came from
prominent houses , and the result was a sharp
advance of Ic u bushel. The closing was
strong at outside llguros , and the last prices
murk an improvement of about ! } . < e in price ,
ns compared with Saturday. The stalwart
bull contingent In the local Held has boon re
inforced recently by the strongest and most
energetic operators , who constitute what
is known as the local talent.
Hcam , Cudnhy , .lones nnd their followings -
lowings are now pronounced bulls.
The mystery now isVIio arc the shortsl"
Outside of the moderate 1'orcign Interest , the
shorts cannot bo located very satisfactorily ,
unless it should turn out that Hutctiinson is
heavily llxcd that way.
Corn was very dull. Receipts were heavy.
The weather is still favorable to a free
movement trom thu farmers' hands ; and
there is only a dull , dragging demand from
the shippers. Tliero was no outside business
of any account , and even the loc.il trade was
tmall. January opened at 'i3 ( . < i'ir ; > tfc , but soon
wcakenod to ! HJ/e , and later to iMj V , back to
S4 } 3W < : , nud again to : ! 4 ; < c. May was
dull and without friends until HTI c was
reached , at which price there was a strong
demand developed , presumably from the
short Interest : and on the publication of the
decrease of 4MOOU ) bushels for the week in
the visible supply , the demand from the sumo
source was further stimulated to a moderate
extent , and there was no enthusiasm or
even life in business. January closed at
B4J < c , nnd May at U'ic sellers , which is u
decline of kc on near futures , and there is
no change In the price of May from the clos
ing llgurcs of Saturday. Tliero were no
charters made to-day.
The provision trade recovered a llttlo from
Saturday's ' depression movement and was in
no wise bullish , but tlic market , presented u
stronger front , and as a rule closed higher
after modornto fluctuations. In pork the ad
vance established was lUc , and in short ribs
Co. December lard closed ly e lower.
