i\ Very Singular Story.
Springliold Republican : George L.
Lewis , for three years clerk in the City
National bank ntSpringlicId , Mass. , has
boon discharged this week after sign
ing a written confession that ho had
schemed to defraud the bank in seveial
ways. The bank ollicers began to sus
pect young Lewis of such designs about
n month ngo. Hois but nineteen , the
son of a widow in poor health nnd with
limited means. Ho had a key to
the outer door of the bank , and was
the first person to enter the rooms each
day. but ho had nlwavs enjoyed the full
confidence of his employers. As soon ,
however , as ho was suspected of cngng-
ing questionable companionship- ! , Cash
ier Bowman went to Boston and placed
the cnso in the hands ol a Pinlcorton
detective , who came to this city and has
staid here ever since. The young man
had expressed a desire to make the nc-
quaintaiipo with a "crook , " and this
role was assumed by the detective , to
whom Lewis unfolded his plans. Ho
ollored to utter counterfeit money mid
produced the electrotypes of the signa
tures of President SalTord and Cnsliior
Bowman , with which ho proposed to
forgo a check for a large amount on the
City bank's Now York correspondents.
Meanwhile the bank officials wore in
communication with the detective and
made minutes of nil that the clerk pro-
pof > < id to do. The directors met at
Cashier Bowman's house Monday even
ing , and Marshall dune called nt the
Mnssnsoit , whore Lcwisand the "crook"
wore in consultation. They were per
suaded by band-cull's to go before the
directors , nnd there for the first time
the clerk learned that his supposed ac
complice was a detective. His schemes
were narrated , and he signed the con
fession. The banlc authorities might
easily ha\o waited until the young
man had committed some of the crimes
he had planned , but rhoso to clohO the
matter and open the boy's eyes before ho
had become a criminal. The bank has
suffered no loss beyond the detective's
bill for services.

THOSE OHUISTMAS STOCKINGS.
Whore to Fill TUem A 1'nrnillsc for
Chrlitinni Shoppers ,
The season so rich In joy for the little
ones , and of gladness as well to the
larger folks is rapidly approaching , nud
everywhere the poojilo are nsuing
themselves the questions : What shall
wo got for Christinas gifts , and where
shall wo get them ? H is the especial
business of the proprietors of the ! ) ! )
cent store to anticipate the want of the
community at this season , and for the
present year they have made unusual
efforts in this respect. A new stock
hardly needs to bo labeled "now , " it
speaks for Itself. Nothing is more an
noying than to find a reputed now stock
largely inndo up of rosuerected goods
that have gone through several holiday
seasons "bobbing up serenely from
below" with each recurring year.
There is none of thai kind of business
at the Ol ) cent storo. Their prices , for
one thing , do not leave many goods to
carryover , and they sell those for what
they are and for prices corresponding.
The e who make purchases fiom their
stock will llnd thnt novelty is one of
its marked features , now things
that will bring a smile ol pleasure even
to the vntoran Christmas camp igncr.
If theio is any thing now under the December -
comber sun , they have it sure. It would
seem they hud exhausted the world in
getting together suehnnendlo's variety
of goods , nnd among the things thnt
attracted our spccinl attention wns the
varied assortment of toys in mechanical ,
musical , steam , iron , wooden , etc. The
dolls , too , so life-liko in appearance ,
were receiving their proper attention
from the large crowd pivsnnt. Albums ,
leather and plush novelties wore dis
played in a great variety of styles , many
of thorn now and original with this
house. Lamps , glassware , china , etc. ,
were nrominontly shown and attracted
'
considerable nlt'eiition , both for the
beauty of designs and the extremely
low priced nt which th"y were marked.
An liour spent nt the ! l ! ) cent store will
prove a most gratifying pleasure , and
wo would advise all our readers to avail
themsehes of the first opportunity.
