Some of the farmers have lived for over twenty years upon prop erty belonging to the government. In snmo instances transfers have taken place without the party of the first part hav.ing njiy legal right to the land. Others , principally wealthy men living in this place or in the vicinity , have so- curt < ! rent for tracts of land for which they havo'never oven paid the homestead - stead feo. The fancied security of those "squat ters is sometimes rudely disturbed. Now nnd then a keen-witted individual who is cognizant of the -facts and pos sessor of the requisite nerve , will home stead a nice farm upon which consider able improvement lias been made. The original settler can only claim pay for the improvements. Ho must compen sate the homesteader for the land or Jose it. , S may bo supposed , this is'contin- Balljr causing trouble. Several yuars ttgo & man named Dacus , who , by the way , was the author ol one of the num erous histories of the James and Younger boys , homcstoadcd a splendid farm occupied by Mr. Sisk. The latter had built a nice house noon the land , besides otherwise iinp ovinur it. When be heard of the move made by Dacus , lie declared that ho would not yield pos- eession without u fight. The court was appealed to , and before the matter was ottlcd Mr. SisK had a bullet hole through his body , while his house bore the marks of cold lead. Another case oc curred this fall in which eighty acres of improved land passed from the hands of ( i non-resident into the possession of a poor farmer. The latter had rented the land and raised n crop of cotton. After paying his rent ho discovered that the lapd belonged to Uncle Sam. There upon ho put in a. claim nnd secured the property. An old rebidont of the county caved his homo by more chance. Ho had lived upon a mountain farm for a quar ter of a century without securing a bomostoader's right. A friend called lute ono evening and told him that an other man wa going to homestead the land. The old gentleman got up at midnight and barely saved his homo -by beating his opponent into the court koubo on the following morning. Iis- furbances about the ownership ot prop erty are liable to occur at any moment , us there scorns to be considerable "im proved" homcbtcad land in this , part of Arkansas. Occossonally northerners meet with a good deal of opposition when they en deavor to bottle in this part of the into. This is more apt to bo the case vrhon the bottler happens to be a person of education and the surrounding com munity 0110 whore the inhabitants have had limited schooling. Ignorant people ple seem to have an inborn dislike for those who are their superiors in natural talents and education. The following adventures of A NOHTIIUKN 8CIIOOI > 5rA'AM will servo to illustrate the matter. She was ; i widow with two childrenand had come from a'small town in northern Illinois. A land agent in this place had induced her to take charge of a hotel at ono of the lit tle summer resorts that are located at various points in the moun tains , ale offered a house of fifteen rooms , furnishbd throughout , for 810 per month. She accepted the terms moved into the hotel in the midst of winter with the intention of opening the place for tourists in the spring. The community was one in which ignorance - noranco was the prevailing disease , and she decided to niuko an cllortto _ allevi ate the condition of the poor'sufferers. There was no public money to pay a regular teacher , so she decided to start a select school , with the tuition at $1 per month for each scholar. A canvass of the neighborhood resulted in secur ing enough scholars to afford her a Comfortable livelihood. Besides this she had several boarders. Among the guests at her hotel # .3 a little old bach elor , who was the lord atici niiistor of . the only store in the place. By virtue of his position as the only storekeeper for miles around , he had secured the appointment of postmaster. Con sequently the little bachelor was n man of much importance in the neighbor hood. His jokes would always excite a laugh while by popular consent he seemed to have been selected to settle the momcntuous questions thot would now and then create itn argument among the natives. A widow occupied a dwelling near by the store , who , if Daino Rumor was cor rect , had moved there for the purpose of winning the postmaster for'n hus band. ± Jut that influential little gen tleman ignored the good things so near nt home and sought the company of the northern school ina'uin. Being a north ern man himself ho was always welcome. Ho would play dominoes with the chil dren mid sit up till the little ones got sleepy. They would be put to bed , then the postmaster would play domineos with the school ma'am till 'far toward midnight. This was kept up until it began to excite considerable interest and curiosity. The other widow , mennwhilo , was letting ting jealousy rule the thoughts and in order to vent her feelings bought the company of other women. There was a middle-aged couple in the community who consoled her with the assurance that the northern fechool ma'am was a ease impostor pester , and that she ought to bo run out of the community. The man was n splendid male gossip , while his wife was a big binner of that sort among women. All were equally ignorant , envious and malicious , and many and long woi'o the consultations they held in secret. Presently vague stories began to cir culate in the neighborhood concerning the .school ma'am. As is often the case in remote regions there was n widely extended network of relationship exist ing among the people in this particular place. They were clanish to an unrca soimblo degree , and what one believed they all invariably did. An enemy of any individual member of the big fam ily was the common enemy of them all. It was not long ocforo the feehool ma'am begun to detect , by the actions of her acquaintances and the intiumer- able stories which came to her in frag ments , that she tiud the postmaster wore being made the subject of much gossip Soon the stories became slanj dcrous , but they could not bo traced to heir author. A faction uroso which ndcavored to got up u select school or a young man , and ruin the northern woman's business. The community began to take sides , and the interest in creased at a rapid rate. People living in the valley , and belonging to the big family before mentioned , Were de termined that the school ma'am should go , while those- residing in the moun tains btoutly declared that she should remain. Both sidps were about equally matched in numbers. It became ap parent that something had to bo done to silence the slanderous tongues. The school was suspended. A lawyer was called from O ark by the northern woman. In the consultation ho said the whole matter depended upon her grit and determination. Finally , after mooting with considerable trouble , she secured enough admissablo evidence , as she thought , to warrant the arrest of the male scandal-monger , before men tioned , on the charge of slander. The examination was sot for an onrly date , nnd as the day drew nigh the interest became intense. When the day ar rived both factions were present in full force determined to see fair play. Many of the men wcro armed , and it would have required but a small start to have created a free-for-all fight.A host of witnesses were on hand , thus rendering the proceeding long _ nnd te dious. Little by little , and with many vexatious interruptions , tlia slanderous stories were traced to a common sou-res the widow who lived by the store. Al though the schoolma'am failed to win the case , she cleared her character com pletely. As boon as the neighborhood became quiet , she and the little post master were married. They live hap pily in the big hotel , while those who wore once so eager to drive the school- ma'umout of the country , now strive to secure her favor. Such "is human nature and such is life in this odd old state of Arkansas. bTKIKGKNT SUNDAY LAWS. The people of this country are deter mined to have an outward semblance of morality on Sunday , even if they can not induce "other sinners" to seek after the genuine articles. There are some stringent laws for week day observance , but those that govern the Sabbath are doubly so. Some of them nro considered simply riduculous. A person is positively prohibited from playing any kind of game on Sunday for amusement. This includes croquet , marblesmumblcpog , jack-straws , cards , jack-stones , and a variety of other in nocent games. There is a fine for rid ing a horse past n house in gallop on Sunday or for shouting or yelling. 3IAKIXQ TUB HKST OF IT. Although people have been greatly exercised over the alleged stolen ballot boxes in the counties immediately south , they had time to enthuse over the presiden tial election , "ttelinblo election news could not bo obtained until late in the week. In this part of the state there is quite a sprinkling of republicans. In one voting precinct of the county an in- torehting 'ncidont occurred Saturday evening succeeding the election. A union labor man furnished ono anvil , a democrat another , while the republi cans supplied the powder. Every time nn explosion shook the ground the entire - tire crowd would yell for Ilnrrison. "It was not long since I was called to officiate at a wed ding which was impromptu. The in vited groomsman failed to appear , and a neighbor was asked to asaibt , as the couple both having been married , wore anxious to get out of town to avoid a charivari. Seeing his mistake , for want of a bettor place , ho awkwardly put the mullln in the groom's pocket , took the ring from his mouth and handed it to the bride , at the same time pouring a glass of wine from the bottle at hand into a dusty piece of lovely Sevres china. Perspiration stood out in great beads on his forehead , and as soon as the ceremony was performed he looked at the envelope in his hand containing my fee , broke the seal , and , I guess , tliinking either that ho had earned it or that it was intended for hitnputitin his pocket , handed me the empty en velope and lied. Philadelphia Ledger : Ono Allen , of Now York City , nftor visiting his sweet heart in Rocklnnd county , New York , the other evening started for the house of a friend to spend the remainder of the night. The two dwellings uro about a ratio uimrt , nnd Allen decided toinako a "short cut" across lots and through a yar l. A dog objected to the prococd- ing and attacked Allen the moment he entered the yard. The brute was beaten off but continued to worry Allen until the owner of the property and his son appeared , each carrying a revolver. "Call off this brute , " shouted young Allen , and the farmer replied , "What business have you here ? Going to steal homo of my chickens , were you ? It is lucky for you that the dog didn't eat you up. I guess we will take you in charge until wo can summon a constable. " The dog was called off , and notwithstanding the young lover's protestations , ho was taken hold of by the farmer and his son and led into the kitchen. The re mainder of the family in astute of great excitement , peered into the room at the ' 'burglar , " wh.cn the farmer's wife , who had met young Allen , recognized him. Oolne Homo to Marry. Chicago Herald : Joseph Chamber lain 1s not the only one in the world who is willing to travel several thousand miles for n wife. Mr. Moy Chung , of 10 Chatham square , of Now Yrok , is about to sta rt to far-off China to wed the girl of his choice , though she is not his third choice. Years ago , when Mov Chung was a little boy , ho played tag among the tea plants in the garden of Chang Wi with the eldest daughter of that gentleman. Years passed on and the maiden grow in size and beauty. Chang Wi was asked for his daughter's hand by Moy Chung , but the old gentleman hinted at the fact that housekeeping re quired money , even in China , and Moy was only a poor youth. If the young man would wait until ho had a fat ac count in the Sing Wang bank Chang Wi would bo both pleased and happy to become the father-in-law of Moy Chung. This decision wrung the hearts of the youthful lovers , and tears fell on the tea plants in the garden as Moy told his story. Ono day Moy made a resolve to seek a fortune among the occidentals. There was a sad purling , vows of eternal constancy uttered in the choicest Chi nese , and then Moy tailed away. That was live years ago. Love nerved the youth to high endeavor , and within a year he was general manager , cashier and inter preter for the establishment. Ho was prudent , and every year Moy Chung was a gainer by $5,000. All was going along smootiily when a new trouble arose that threat ened disastrous results. Chang Wi was the father of another daughter , a few yours younger than the fiancee of Moy Chung. She , like her bister , was a beauty , and when young Quong Lei met her he fell in love with her at first Hight. Then Quong Lei wrote to Moy Chung , bcsoeching him to return at once and marry the maiden of his choice. Moy was in a dilemma. Hero ho was in New York making $5,000 a year , with a prospect of increas ing the amount every year. If ho resigned his position and wont back to China he would have to relinquish the prospective wealth. If lie remained hero four hearts would be sad. Ho thought it all over , and love triumphed.
