TiiBHr.i : . ] The wheat market w.is heavy
unit BCcmliiKly ready for n break all day , yet
It was a stubborn market and resisted raids
with stolid strength that sorolv tried the
nerves of "short sellers. " ThU was the
case until the session wan well advanced.
Then the deluge. The first fc.ituro of note
was the rapid selling of a bl | ? line of wheat
by Scliwnrt7 ft Dupcc , with SCCIIIIUR dolor
initiation to bro.xk the market. I urio lots
wcro offered a shade under the market until
Mny wni pulled down from ? l.Hi ) to $1 IHJf ?
( in N. When the pressure from that source
relaxed the prlco rebounded toil. 14 ' 4. It sub
sequently worked back to 11.14 , ami for an
hour or moro hung nt * I.Hl.U'if. Then ,
shortly before 1 o'clock , pressure w.is put on ,
nnd the market was beaten down to SI M' .
There was a strong flshl around $ ,13Jf , but
tuo market soon p.ivo w.iy , and fractions
dropped off rapidly. It toolc but u moment to
travurso the distance from * l.ii : lo f I. ! ! ) > { .
With Hcarcely a piuso the jirlco went to
tl IM' wliiTivafterutrilllnRdclay.rtstnrtwas
made for l. in. 'Ihcclosc was $ l l'Jt < @l ID for
May , nnd $ l.H for December. This malccs a
loss on the day of l o for December and l }
( Slc for.May. The dealings wcro heavy
the last tliirty minutes , and a declining ten
dency overwhelming. A ray of light may h'o
found for bulls in the fact tli.it the difference
between contract wheat and No , 3 had nar
rowed 'J c In the la t two days. It was given
out curly that F.ilrb.wk had unloaded the
last of his big line of wheat through
Schwartz it Dupco , but on the other hand ,
parties who are very close to that gentleman
say that ho had exprusied his intention be
fore going c.ist to hold on to his wheat , re
gardless of Immediate lluetuatlons. That ,
however ; was be/oro ho came Into personal
contact with the intensely boarUh crowd 111
New York. Ho may have modified his views
Hincc. In any event , the importance of Fair-
bank's position has been quoted at its full
value Ho is said to liuvo been long only
about 1,00 ! ( > % ( )0 ) < ) bushels , instead of 7,000,1100 or
8.000,000 bushels , us reported by gopslpers.
The lir-Ht ulfoct of the unaulhorbcd announce
ment that Kairbanlc had sold out was to
braeu up the market , but later another view
was taken of it and the crowd acted as
though a terrifying bng-a-boo Irid been re
moved. Short sellers operated with more
conlidcnco than usual. Thu bull-dog in their
path had abandoned his post. Hutchlnson
was on all sides of the market. Ho was buy
ing and selling at every point , appearing
sometimes in the guisu of a raider , and a0'iiiu
as a buyer at top prices. The erowil has ap
parently given up trying to guess who has
been doing the steady buying that was noted
for two or thrco days , the mysterious de
mand having been seemingly satisfied around
$1 14. For want of definite knowledge on
the Mibjcot some of thd wise ones attributed
the buying to Armour , but that tip was quite
as ineffectual in bolstering up values as
Pillslmry'tt ' letter. The I'lllsbury epistle has
developed its greatest power in its klck-like-
a-kangaroo. The market was weakest and
most active the last half hour. In that
time it broke a full cent and closed weak
nnd limp at the bottom. Hutrhinson
was a big seller on the break. Indeed , ho
started it on n report that the receipts of
wheat in Minneapolis on Monday would be
near'y seven hundred cars. On the break
there was brisk selling on stop orders "for
long account. " It was generally supposed
that cables were steady , but the situation
abroad cannot be said to bo favorable to the
bulls. The domestic situation also seems to
bo destitute of fresh bullish inspiration , and
some of the beat friends of wheat do not an
ticipate a change for the better until ttio
stocks of flour are reduceit considerably.
The mills are very generally curtailing pro
duction for the present.
The receipts of corn wcro 29 cars over the
estimates made yesterday and (1,000 ( bushels
moro were added by canal. In to-day's ' in
spection returns there were five cars of new
corn and thrco of those graded No. 2. The
wcajher was again clear and frosty , which is
of course favorable to freer movement of this
year's crop and to an improvement In its
condition. The I-.lverx | > ol market was quoted
dull nnd slight. A reduction was quoted for
spot nnd November delivery , but moro de
ferred futures were unchanged. The prin
cipal influence was the weather nnd its prob
able effects , and those were not in favor of
higher prices. The business done was again
very limited In amount. There were few
outside orders and they , as far as could be
ascertained , were princfpally to sell. A
weakness developed in wheat was another
element of weakness which was felt most
near the close. May future was in fairly
good demand , though It suffered in price
along with the others. November closed at
UOjSfc to-day , against ( % yesterday. De
cember was18lic ! ! nt close , which Is UP'Ve
lower than the resting price of yesterday ,
and May clo ing nt liSJf bid to-day is fc
under tiio closing price on Friday.
Provisions attracted increased attention.
Cash property was again in good demand ,
nnd in n speculative way trading was moro
pcncrnl nnd larger in volume than
on any day during the week. On morning
call , sales , macio for future delivery ,
amounted to 'J.fiOO ! barrels of pork , V.'MO
tlciecs of lard nnd 250,000 Ibs. of nhort ribs.
Increased buying by distributive trade ,
coupled with meager stocks here , has finally
turned the tide , and to-day the bull side was
favored with a strong , as well us an active ,
market. Higher prices wore realized with
out trouble , and well maintained throughout.
In pork the net advance established was 7 > i

and common , mndo up largely of low-grado
ToxuiiHiind ranger * , yet nearly all were sold ;
and anything at all useful , either in native ,
Texan or ranger line , sold equally as high as
yesterday. A stock yard circular , referring
to the business of the week , says : "Our cattle
market opened this week with u fair supply
of western and Texas cattle and a largo supply -
ply pf natives , 'corn-fed. ' And while the re-
colpts have been moderately quiet during the
week , price * have advanced on westerns ,
Tezans and native butcher stock , while corn-
fed native cattle have declined from day to
day until prices arc 25o lower. On Friday
there were less cattle , and prices nro a little
stronger. Western cattle are abput in for the
'Reason , and better markets are looked for on
native corn-fed , as our packers , as well as
shippers of live cattle will have to confine
their purchases to this class. Texans will be
coming forward the cntiro year , but as a ma

month , as compared with the same period
last year , show a large decrease. In consequence
quence packers did not enter into competition
for offerings. Usually we have largo receipts
and good markets this tuna of tha year , and
if the receipts wcro hcavlar business would
be better , The weather hot boon warm , and
that also Is against , us. With the present
shipping demand nnd colder weather , so
packers can handle hogs ( or product ) , wo
ran nee ti6 reason why the market should not
hold up to the present prices , Soar as
U-urned there are not as inniiy hoes ready for
