THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SATURDAY , NOVEMBER 37 ; 1SSS. THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , Trotting In Wliont Not Oharnctcr- izocl by Special Excitement. A PROFOUND DULLNESS IN CORN. Ilio Cnttlo Market KcclltiK Stronger HORN Wcnkcr anil Unsettled Only a JMo < lcr < uo Hlmwliig In tlio UllHllH'HH. CHICAGO rnonucn M/vititur. ' Cmi'Aoo , Nov. in. [ Special Telegram to THE UHB. ] Tlio wheat market was strong tinil rather higher early In the dav. but iu Inter phases were tinged with woakiiLis perhaps satiety would be a better word. The demands of buyers were seemingly quite satisfied , and ibc market pasted \mdur the control of the scalpers , who worked values down about Ic. The thing most talked about was Plllsbury's letter. This letter is variously construed , and people arc disposed to Inquire somewhat curiously Into thi probable motive that Influenced Its prep aration anil publication. There hns been , so far as known , no public clamor for Mr. Plllslmry's opinions and views , yet hero comes a long letter , In the nuturo of a "special pleading , " In the support of n theory that in-iees are not to high nnil that they will eventually bo much higher. There Is really nothing new or Rtartling in the communication. It presents rstimntcsof the production of the northwest , which have been accepted by the trade as correct , for weeks , and which none will dis pute. Ho then proceeds to admit that there Is at present plenty of Hour and wheat , a statement which is unquestionably true. His argument that tills period ol present plenty will bo followed by n period of scarcity utul high prices. Is the argument , of every bull. The publication of n letter with his numo at tached to ll nmj strengthen the faith oC some of the friends of wheat , but the first cflect 1ms been to engender suspicion that it was written to bolster up the market or to "bull" it , to employ the usual trade phrase. Such being the case there , sprungup to-day mi almost unconquerable desire on the part of professionals to "copper t ho letter" and sell wheat Still , a sense of caution was ever present , and boars wore , as n rule , indisposed to venture far from tlio shore. The bull buz/saw has an unpleasant hublt of making its presence known these days , and short hollers have learned to respect any neighbor hood in which it may bo located. Therefore , while boars wanted to plunge , they were ro- Btramcd from doing so by recollections of past punishment. Kcam and Hutchinson were the most conspicuous sellers to-day. They seemed determined to take advantage of whatever strength Pillsbury might inject into the market. Their sales of what the crowd believed to bo "lonir wheat" were quite heavy , and but for the fact that the market koi'i > striking good buying orders , on very little reaction a material break must have re- Milled , As it was n large uniount of wheat was absorbed in a quiet way during the course of the session. Hut eventually or ders on upper levels were filled , and values settled. The market rested , with an ap pearance of considerable firmness , about Ic below the top , and closed there. Trading was not ehnraotori/ed by any special excite- mont. it was quite generous in volume. however. May opened at $1. l.V-j , ranged at $1 13VOS1-1I 4. and closed V ; iiom inside. December ranged nt l.lH9fi'M'-'lf and closed on bottom. Husiness in near futures was light. There was n profound dullness in the corn pit. The outward movement continues good mid the demand for the daily receipts also holds up well , but the clear , frosty Weather now prevailing hero and throughout thu west promises a freer movement of now corn , and u possibility of more it grading No. S this year -llian appeared probable a day or two ago. Liverpool was quoted dull , and ex ports from the Atlantic ports were smaller than recent averages , lint New Orleans was again a shipper , 50,1 OJ bushels having cleared from there yesterday. The outside business done was of the smallest dimensions ; local speculators had tlio market to them selves , and the most prominent of this num ber was a free seller of December corn. Liverpool received in the last three days 75- 400 centals of American corn , nnd10,000 bushels worn taken in New York to-day for export. There was no relief to thu dullness of the day , as the narrow fluctuations tend to show , and a somewhat lower range of prices was established as its outcome. November closed nt 40V c , which is 'fc lower than yesterday. December closed at ilS-'j ' @ tojfje and loses ' .fc , and May closed at 'We sellers to-day , against that price bid yesterday. In provisions the busi ness transacted made only a moderate show ing. For cash property the demand , though fair , was smaller than on any of the- former days of the week , and in a speculative way , late light trading failed to exhibit any special increase. Hutchinson was again the largest individual buyer of futures. The outside interest in the market was limited. Cash pork sold nt ? 1 f.ti'J,1 j@l l.0.'i ; lard at < S.2o ; 10 Ib green hams , at "Jo ; dry salted short ribs at7.52cj7.f | ( and boxed long clears , at CHICAGO IAVE Sl'OCIl CHICAGO , Nov. 10. ( Special Telegram to TUB Hii.l : : There was a better and steadier demand to-day than for any day since Mon day , and although there was perhaps no clear and established fikvunco , yet salesmen came nearer getting what they asked than for any day since Monday. Huyers generally quoted anything nt nil useful from strong to 153 higher , and nil classes shared in tlio upward .tendency. The run of Tcxans and rangers was the smallest for any day binco the regu lar opening of the season , which , as a matter of course , had n tendency to strengthen vnlues in native classes. Taken alto gether , the market was in a much better condition than any day siucu Monday. Tlio stockcr iind feeder trade pre sented no now fealmes : trade was slow and prices down to low-water murk.
