white boy of ten years , reveals u horrible
state of affairs among the boya at the Cass
street school. The charge against the lads
is sodomy. This unnatural crime has been
going on for some tlmo and ono of the boys
is under medical treatment.

Deputy Sheriff Grebe returned from Dos
Monies having in charge John Stewart , who
is wanted at Miilard , in thiscountyforhorse-
slcaling. The authorities at Des Moines
were disposed to set Stewart free , and had
the day been other than the Sabbath , a
habeas corpus would 1mvo undoubtedly been
granted before the arrival of Grebe. The
news came to the car of the latter , and ho at
once executed his business with tlispitchanil ,
this morning by the opening of the Iowa
court , Giebuand his man wciu mounting the
steps that lead to the county bastilo.

A case of extreme destitution at 1131 South
Tenth street has been reported to the police
by a sewing machine agent. The number is
that of a dilapidated shanty with biokcn
down dnois and smashed windows that do
not attempt to bar the cold winds alieady
blowing through them. The occupant is a
woman named Gravcry , who has now been
ill for six weeks , and whoso sole attendant is
ono small child. Her husband owns consid-
ublo property near the corner of Ninth and
Jackson streets. The commissioners have
taken the matter In hand and sent the county
physician to investigate.
Don't Hitch to Polen.
The police have commenced to arrest people
ple violating the uow ordinance against the
tying of horses to painted telegraph and telo-
Vhono poles. Those arrested yesterday were
Dr. Van Camp , Dr. Sprague , N. L. Eaton
and C. A. GOSB. Dr. Sprague was very in
dignant over his arrest , and on being released
to nppcar for trial later , went outside and
discovered Inspector Ttirnbull's horsa tied tea
a telephone polo in front of the police station.
Ho then demanded the arrest of Turnbull
for violating the same ordinance. Thoofllcor
was not arrested.

R. II. Vlnton , a well-known young rail
road man , died at his residence , SfWSCharles

til ho became private secretary to Mr. Calla-

Among her late exploits was the pretended

J , It , Jacobs , who until recently was in
charge of it mall station nt "Fork Uoadu , " in
Dundy county , this sUto , was arrested Sun-
fluy by Deputy United States Marshal

olllco at that point was discontinued , and In
consequence tl.u report of the retiring' post-
muster ( Jacobs ) was checked up at Washing
ton. It resulted in the discovery of n short
age in thu funds , and also that U certain pos
tal money ordur issued iu favor of the gov
ernment was missing. On the strength of
this Jacobs was arrested and I a now confined
lu tlio county Jail nt this pluuo. When ques
tioned concerning the matter he declined to
lay anything concerning his guilt or iiino-

Man With It ,
A. J. Hovlns hat caused the arrest of
Charles J. Smith , of the Cooperative Land
nnd Lot Co. , on the cluir-a of disturbing the
pcaco. The two had some words over
money matters In the oflleo of the former in
Paxton block on last Saturday nnd Hevlns
claims that Smith attempted to throw him
out of the window to the pavement below
and that ho was only saved from n horrible
death by a lady clerk In the ofllce who threw
her arms about him nnd drew him back.
Smith says this is not true. Ho admits that
they had a dispute over a monetary transac
tion Inwhich Smith had given n check in
settlement and that Hovlns , acting for his
client , had accepted the same and afterwards
withdrew the acceptance , at the same tlmo
garnishccing Smith's bank ; that this act
caused Smith great annoyance , compelling
him to borrow money elsewhere to conduct
his business. When Smith found , ho
claims , that Hevlns had departed from
his agreement , ho charged him with
the same whereupon u scufllo ensuedUovins. ,
It Is stilted , striking Smith. The latter wont
to n telephone in an mljoinif room to sum
mon thu police , but states that lievlns
would not allow him to use the 'phone.ut the
same time kicking him on the leg. In the
sculllo that unsued both men nearly fell out
the window , which is live stories high. As It
was both the contestants hats dropped to the
ground. Smith then left and Huvins , It is
told , rushed to his olllco and removed an
army bayonet from its scabbard and standing

saving ho would run the bayonet through
him. Smith will cause Uovins1 arrest.

The question of a library at Fort Omaha ,
or rather the means proposed to establish ono
by Chaplain Nave , is still the leading topic
among military men of the city. Speaking-
the subject yestciday ono of the latter said :
"Tho library at the fort nt present consists
of about " > ( K ) volumes. The room Is all that
could bo desired , belnij thu same that is used
for the court martinis. A soldier acts
as librarian. la addition to the
books mentioned the men are sup
plied with the popular maga7ines.
New York , Chicago and other papers. Until
lately no one complained of the library , it
should also be known that only a few days
before the appeal for books was made In the
papers , $100 had Ixjon appropriated from the
post hind to purchase more now books. Tin :
Jiii : ! published an article stating that the
men at Fort Omaha did not earn to become
objects of charity nnd that article pleased us
much , and saved us the trouble of publish
ing a letter which no doubt would have been
warm. "
The response to the article Just mentioned
in Sunday's linn , stated that the movement
for a library was a marlc of acknowledgment
for the services rendered thu citizens of
Omaha by the soldiers m participating-
some of the piocessions that had been held
I" town.

Spring Ijiike Park Improvements.
Contractor Condon is processing very fast
with thu work at Spring Lake park. E street
is graded west to the Union Pacific track ,
and will soon bo completed to the boulovaul.
In the park the trees have been trimmed ,
the grubbing done and underbrush removed.
Two dams , one at the old dam by the pump
house and one just above the rustic spring
nouse , each moro than twenty-one feet high ,
have been built. On Wednesday the water
will bo turned in the lakes. Just below each
of the dams a solid-nil driveway
has been constructed across the stream to
connect the road on the south side with the
north side driveway. A flush dram from
each lake lias been constructed so that the
water can bo let out at any time. On the
north side of the ravine a magnificent drive
way has been constructed. The old boiler
houses will bo removed and a lot of Una boat
houses erected where they now stand. A
nexv walk along the south side of the lakes
will bo constructed. The upper dam is not
yet completed but the timbers are in place
and the iron sheeting has arrived and will be
put on at once. When completed ilio costs
of this impiovement will bo nearly $50,000.

Though there nro now many vestibule
trains , the pioneer Pennsylvania Lim
ited remains pearlers. Running- from
Chicago to New York in twenty-live
hours over the excellent track of the
Pennsylvania lines , lighted by electric
ity and heated by steam , it surrounds
the traveler with the maximum of com
fort that can ho obtained on a journey
by rail. C. W. Adams , assistant gen

Chicago , will reserve accommodations
upon application by Idler or telegraph.
Frightened.
St. Mary's avenue was the scene of an at
tempted burglary Saturday night , and the
hardware establishment of F. H. Honntovell ,
No. 1C05 , was the place selected for the oper
ation. The burglars succeeded In cutting
around the lock of the rear entrance but
were disturbed by the night watchman , arid
decamped. They loft behind a well-used
ttraco and a brand-new bit. These are now
In the hands of the police. There was a ru
mor that they had gained entrance into n
neighboring store and taken a number of
bits , key-holo saws , and other Implements
necessary to complete the kit of a profes
sional burglar , but it lacked confirmation.

which is to commence business here on the

cessors rented the room which has heretofore
been used as republican campaign hcadiiuar
tors on Fourteenth street , between Painam
and Harney , but Mr , Cnthcart objects to it
and Is looking for a better place ot

about half a dozen men. Mr. Cnthcart was
asked if his company Intended to cut the
rates between Chlcngo and Oraalm , and re
plied that ho didn't think It would , but that

business solely on the Chicago , Milwaukee
& St Paul road between this place unil
Chicago.
Shortly after the Adams company had dis
placed the United States from the road men
tioned , the latter company tliteutcncd to enJoin -
Join the Adams from doing business in its
old territory. Hut nil talk of contest has
now ceased. It has been ascertained that
the United Status had no contract with the
Milwaukee road nnd consequently were oc
cupying the same at the pleasure of Its own
ers. No suit has been brought and It is quite
likely tnut the Adams will in no manner bo
interfered with in the eii'oymunt of Its newly
acquit od territory.

Hobert D. Duncan , the superintendent of
plumbing , Insists that there should bo a
state law icipiiring the registration of master
plumbers the same as of engineers. The re
sult of some of his latu Inspection of plumb
ing has i ovealed both gross carelessness and
ignoranie of the trade on the part of alleged
plumbers , The last place ho inspected was
the residence of Kd Walsh , on Spruce and
Ad lor streets. Iho following is the entry
made by Mr. Duncan in his daybook in re
gard to the work done there :
"The pipe is too small to be supplied from
tank pressure. Work very poorly done. The
small plato to bo used as a clean out for trap
( below the basin on sewer side of trap ) has
been left off , allowing the foul air to escape
from the pipes into thcbath-nooin.niut the ex
crement to fall on the lloor beneath thu basin.
The woik was aono in July IhST , and
claimed to bo complete in December 1887. "
Mr. Duncan says that the family 1ms been
annoyed with noisome odors us a consequence
quence , for several months and have paid a
number of plumbers to invesllgatu the
work , but to no purpose.
A child of Mr. Walsh's has been prostra
ted with fever supposably from the presence
of foul gases in the house. There have been
a number of other cases of gross negligence
on the part of plumbers also discovered

There are many things to ho grate
ful lor , if we would but think so , and
among these arc the introduction of Van

ready. We had an immense stock enough we thought to last us through the season but our tremendous
trade the past two weeks has thinned them out so much that we have to let up adv Using them for a few
days , until we get in fresh goods , for which we have telegraphed our buyer ,

give every week some new drive ? , we will this week have n HIQ SUIT SALE. During the next six days
we will prove most conclusively to the thousands who may call on us , that wo faithfully keep our promises.

The following extraordinary offerings are made for this week
Lot No. 1 , consists of about four hundred Business Suits , all sacks , plain and fancy cheviots and cassimerc3 ,

ca'simcre suits. , on which we stake our reputation , that they are honestly worth double the money. One is n
plain gray , the other a fine silk mixed cassimere. We will simply say that this line of 410 suits is destined to
become the greatest advertisement for us.
Lot No. tl , Is a line of elegant cutaway Frock Suits , made of fine fancy worsted , ono
of the choicest suits ever offered ; tailor made aud beautiful fitting. These suits are
made for men who demand and can appreciate a superior character of worknonship.
They sell ordinarily for $25 ; we offer them this week at $13. This is the moat fearful
slaughter of Suits that wo ever got into in the very midst of our busiest season.
We are opening to-day and placing in stock some very handsome styles of Children's
Overcoats of beautiful designs and trimmings. The prices are in accordance witli all
