most of the tlnlc , though there were , of
course , sharp rallies during the course of the
fiction. Yesterday there were some very
larpo buylnK orders In the hamli of comnns-
nlon incrchantH a little way under the mar-
hct at tlioinsulcrangc. To-day these orders
Fccra to have been withdrawn or else the
limits reduced. The bears operated with
greater contldcncc than they have displayed
for a month , and to their astonishment they
met with less icslstanco than they have been
necUAtomcd to cncountcrlriK of late. The
selling scornful to bo led by Linn , whose
views are very pronounced , and who operates
rouraKCoiiBly when he cngaKt's In a campaign.
The bull leaders , on the other hand , seemed
indisposed t present to contest the tend
ency to a decline , though the strongest
of them are said to he buying on u large
scale. Tim short Intel cst htis certainly been
largely increased by the dealings of the past
few days. Whether that is an clement of
weakness is exceedingly questionable in
view of the lightness of stocks and the lim
ited forward movement. The receipts at
primary markets uro milall , anil although the

mented movement the rcculpts at the prln-
ciml | points do not , \ct show it. The sudden
revolution In the character of news from
that quarter , the change from famine to a

presumably anxious for a break to get in

tract comfort from the operations of the
northwentcriicrs. Cables were rather better
in tone and New York reported buying for
foreign account in that market. Heretofore
New York has led every other market on
downturns , but today it actually pulled
back. Minneapolis reported the execution of
good si/cd orders for Hour export. These
reports could not bo verilied , however. Open
ing trades wcru around jl.lT'-n for May ,
though ? 1 IT'/GM.lUJjf ' would probably more
correctly represent the initial range. The
market then sold down to $1.11 % , up tel
* l IV off tolIG % , up to I1.1T1 , , , back to
il.10.ji , tip again to tl.lTQftl.lT1 * , down to
fl UI , up to fl ltijSI ) ( ll > % , off to ll.l.'i , up to
( I 15 > 4 and sharply down to il.14. The net
decline on the day was about Ilcandtho
weakness became emphasised as the session
advanced. It was very sick right at the close.
Hutchinson was a liberal seller all day.
It was repotted early in the day that
ho went home last night long on u larger
line of wheat than any day yet , but If this
bo true ho srcms at the present moment
to bo perfectly willing to see a further de
cline. Lyon and one or two parties were
free sellers of December , early getting rid of
considerable lines. December averaged Jfc
under May when the market was settled ,
but on the slump December was lost sight
of , quotations being nominal. Closing prices
were H.lll'ff for December and $1.14 for
May. Thin Is the low point of the day and
week and makes a decline of 6u from the out
side quotations made on the late advance.
During the last hour the crowd was suffered
to trade without assistance or opposition
from Hutchinson , who sat complacently
through the "razrlo duzzlc" as though ho
hadn't n cent's worth on the market.
The receipts of corn were 38 cars over the
timatcs , but inspection out of store was un-
u&ually heavy , and experts continue to show
up respectable quantities going forward from
Atlantic ports. There wore also fresh orders
for export on the New York market to-day ,
resulting in the taking of eight boats early
with probably more being worked later in
the day. The opening of the market was
chamctcri7cd by a fair amount of activity at
about the closing prices of yesterday. Thcro
was a moderate amount of buying for ac
count of an influential operator , and ho took
i\ fair quantity of the December , January
nnd May deliveries. Fluctuations were held
within narrow bounds and the total amount
of tranuictlons were light , and principally
on , local account. The market was quiet and
steady during the greater part of the day , an
excellent demand for shipment doing much
to sustain it. Closing quotations show n
slight gain on nil futures. November , which
closed ut Hh c is j&o higher ; December at
IWXc , or 1 1-lio higher ; January at U7c , > 4o
higher , and May at 3Je , o higher than the
respective closing prices on Friday.

ments to mention and with the general run
of millers nn undecided feeling held control.
In the market , however , u tiouu' undertone
was manifested , though hird , Jaiiuury hliort
rihs nnd the illllcrent deliveries of pork , OK-
it'pl January , closed the sumo us > esturday.
January pork was advanced So , and for No
vember short ribs the quotations reported
showed a nominal impiovenicnt of IDo.

As a rule Saturday is a very dull day on
the cattle market ; no one rares to buy cattle
to hold over until Monday and thu actual re
nuircmcnts of the day arc very small. To-
dav , however , the market was unusually
quiet und the sales were small and far be
tween. In addition to being dull the market
was easier in sympathy with eastern mar
kets. Just as the market closed a few bunches
were rushed over the scales which helped to
make a bettor showing of tbo day's sales.

good and everything was sold out early at
steady prices. One very choice load reached
