"You have laid the founda tion of that temple of justice , that modern Mecca , to which future generations will turn nnd bow their obeisance to the majesty of the law. It is here that wo offer up the wild freedom of savagery that wo mav enjoy the liberties of civilized life. Hero the malefac tor will lay down his property , his liberty , ills life that society may live and the law bo vindicated. " The tone of Mr. Wilson's speech , from first to last , was studied and thoughtful. Ho pronounced a splendid discourse and it was roost thoroughly appreciated by the great crowd who heard him. Judge Mason followed in one of his char acteristic addresses. Ho paid a splendid tribute to the early settlers of the county , and connectedly traced its procrrcss and de velopment during the past twenty-five years. It was ono of his happiest efforts. The exer cises wore very simple , but Interesting. But little has been made of ono of the great days in the history of the capital city ; yet It will liavu a prominent place in what are- now the unwritten pages. The day was a quiet one , Dut the hour spent at the court house square will prove ono for very pleasant reflection. The addresses furnished food for thoughtful study , and the interest , nil things considered , was ull that could have been expected. SKNTESCEtl VOll THIHTV DAYS. The alleged "cow thieves , " Peter Gross And William Henry , had their hearing before Judge Stewart this morning and were sen tenced to the county jail for thirty days. The case , however , was appealed to the dis trict court and the sentenced birds were re leased for appearance under bonds of $200 each. If thcro Is anything In the case it binges upon the fact that the cow was slaughtered , known to have been diseased , and the meat retailed throughout the city. The ovldonco tended to show that the cow was legitimately purchased and payment re fused because of her unhealthy condition. Tills led to the finest of the gentlemen as stated by TUB Ben this morning. The state came pretty near proving that the cow was killed , dressed , and the moat sold. But the case will be sifted In a higher court and it is but right to suspend judgment until a final decision Is reached , CANCELED HIS ArTOINTMKNTS. The Marquis of Quecnsberry , enroutofrom Australia to London , via San Francisco and New York , passed through this city yesterday afternoon. Thcro was quito u dclcg.tlion of the sporlim ; fraternity nt the depot to sco the distinguished personage. It is to the Marquis of Qucensbcrry that fistiana Is in debted for the code of rules recognized throughout the sporting world as the fairest , fullest and most complcto over devised in the interests of the manly art. They are known ns the Queensberry rules. The mar quis , a tlnu-looklng , woll-prusorvod man of forty-ilvo. Is an ardent sportsman himself , ml an athlete of no mean pretensions. His lartlcular hobby has boon the manly art of lelf-dofonsc , and for years ho labored In 'rawing up the rules which are now o universally used , in order that ho battles of the ring , and the ; ests of muscle and manly strength might bo moro thoroughly and more fairly nade. The old London prizo-ring rules , as s well known , are full of such technicalities .hut often render It possible for the least rcientillc to como out tlrst best In a struggle "or superiority against a skilled adept in tno irt. Tlio late Sulllvau-Mttcholl fiasco Is ro- ; ; illed in oxomplttication of this assertion. A man with a quick eye nnd nimble feet never receives a blow in a contest under the London ules. At the merest feint ho can go down , ml these tactics can bo continued indefinitely - ly until ho is cither awarded the light or it is locidcd a draw. It was to ameliorate and mprovc on laws of the ring that induced the Marquisof Queonsbcrry to devote much tlmo .0 tno solution of the difficulties which he at .ast so fully arrived at , The marquis .ras met bv n number of local porting men who enjoyed the short tlmo which tno stoppage of the train enabled him o make. Webster receiver of the Harlem Cattle com pany , to take charge of its property , personal and reu ! . His bond is fixed ut JTO.OOO. The Kit Carter company is A Texas organization. The Harlem company was incorporated in Colorado , but has ranches and cattle In Hitchcock and Chase counties , Nebraska. The complainants' bill alleges that prior to February 24 , 1SSS , the defendants became in debted to it in the sum of $ l ,015.5a for cattle and at various times gave notes signed jointly by itself mid E. The defendant subsequently agreed to give a cunttcl mortgage to bo placed iu Montana , but , changing its plans as to the latter , it then gave a mortgage on its , property ! ! Nebraska. That property consisted of a herd of Polled Angus and a herd of Holstein , a herd of Hereford cattle , nil thoroughbreds , and numbering about four hundred and fifty , also sixty head of graded and common cattlu and a stock of blooded and common horses. At the same tune the defendant gave to I. R. Darnull , of Texas , as trustee , a deed of trust to its real estate and Improvements in Nebraska. The deed of trust covered 2,000 acres , but the government has since canceled the title to some of it. At the time of giving the mortgage E. M. McGlllin was principal owner in a big dry goods house at Cleveland , and also had large cattle interests in Indian Territory. The complainant alleges that McGlllin has changed his dry goods firm into a corpora tion , and that his cattle Interests m Indian Territory have boon put with the American Cattln Trust , thus putting his property out of legal roach. The complainant therefore asked for tno appointment of a receiver to take possession of the Harlem company's property and dispose of it for the benefit of the creditor company.
