THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , Wheat Opens Strong But Grows Weak Toward the Clouo. CORN DEALERS BREATHE EASIER. Fear of Mnnlpulntlon Oats Htcatly Hut Without Hpcclnl I'CAt- urc ProvlHlonM Slow I'rlino Cattle Scarce HORB Active. CHICAGO PIlomJCK MAUKBT. CUJCAOO , Oct. 24. ( Special 7'elcgram to TIIE UBE. I If the wheat market had done as the mnjority of traders wanted It to do It would Imvo broken to-day , llut It didn't that Is , not until the tall end of the session , There were weak snots , and early In the day the whole list was J o under yesterday's ' closing range , but a general rally followed nnd prices averaged considerably higher than yesterday , taking the day through , though a little Hurry shortly before 1 o'clock caused a break to the extreme inside prices of the session. The controlling sentiment was bullish , and the news , as a rule , Inclined that way. The imirkot owed a good share of Its early strength to ad vices and orders from the northwest. Itccclpts arc falling off sharply at northwest- cru points , and ft seemingly earnest and com petitive demand from millers advanced prices over recent figures. Duluth nnd Min neapolis led us to-duy , and several operators of the "professional" list got themselves In line with the news from the very start. "Winter wheat markets ruled steady as o , general thing , though they were not In hearty sympathy with the development of strength at this point. Cables wcro steady , out foreigners are not yet aroused to see the necessity of reaching out for American wheat at these prices. Receipts at winter wheat points ara also falling oft and the indications point to the conclusion that the rush of winter wheat is over. The local range at the opening this morning was $1.14 for December nnd ? 1.13 lor May. December sold down to $1.11J ! and May to ll.lU ffll.iajf. From these fig ures there was an advance to $1.14 % for De cember and I1.14Jfor May. Later , on a re action of Ic , the Muy discount disappeared and the two active months ranged close to gether and did not get far apart up to the closing hour. Last prices mark a shrinkage of December and about KO in May. The final break affected December moro than May , and closing quotations show May and December % c opart. The volume of specu lative transactions was larger to-day than for some time. Moro Interest was shown In May nnd the friends of wheat who hesitated In operating in the delivery on the ground that it was in danger of being manipulated are turning their attention to May on the theory that If wheat Is cheap property for Decem ber , May , at the same price or near it , should present superior inducements "on merit. " The market hardened after the break late In the session to $1.13 # for May and$1.13 > 4@ 1.13 < for December , and for n few minutes it acted as though It were going up on the b\ck track. Between 1 nnd 1:15 p. in. , how ever , the market was subjected to u sudden selling pressure that caused a continuation of the decline , and values closed around the bottom. The tone of the market for the last half hour was in sharp contrast to the tone during the greater part of the session. U was decidedly a weak state of things supposed to have bren produced by the efforts of local people to unload wheat they had bought earlier in the day and while the market was lowly nnd seemingly \vorklng its way up. Corn started in weak with the fear of man ipulation seemingly less In the minds of1 local traders , who were free sellers of No vember. The party heretofore credited with designs inimical to the prospering of short sales for November , held aloof from the market in the morning , which was the chief Incentive to the freedom with which Novem ber was offered for sale. Later deliveries sympathized with the early weakness in the November future , but at the resulting do- eline there was a good demand for May. The corn market recovered for a tlmo when wheat hod an advancing appearance , but when weakness again began to declare Itself In that cereal corn once moro sought a lower level and closed generally lower and weak for all futures , the exceptions being May nnd January , which closed to-day about where they left off yesterday , May being even 1-lflo better than yesterday. The clos ing prices of the most active futures were : November 41c , which Is J < c lower than yes terday , December 398'39J < c , which is l-lOo under , and Mny at 3bjf ( 38c , l-10c over Tuesday's closing rates. Oats were without special feature , sharing tbo general quietude of the other cereals and ruling nearly steady. A light inquiry for December around 25o was noted , with tradIng - Ing chiefly In the Mn.y option , which sold Within yesterday's narrow and unimportant rango. Receipts were only moderate and the estimates for to-morrow small , and while there was an absence of Interest in a specu lative way , cash met with fair sales. No. 2 in shore was offered sparingly , selling at 24 } c , or the latest previous priceswith trad ing mostly by samples. The provision trade was slow and without special feature. "Old Man" Bloom sold some January pork , Hutchlnson was a moderate buyer of the same future , and with the gen eral run of operators there was moro dispo sition to oven up than to make now contracts. Trading , all told , was considerably under the average volume and the market was too nar row to command any outside attention to speak of. Still prices were held compara tively steady and January pork and short ribs at the close were quoted at yesterday's last prices. October pork at the close showed n decline of Be , October lard of 15c , October ribs of 20o and deliveries of lard later than October of 2X@5c. November and year pork closed at an advance of 2 c.
