THE Hir : I This was another dull day in
wheat. The speculative mnrkut is still away
nbovo the export basis , but high as prices are
nnd have been the receipts do not Indicate
that freedom of movement from first hands
that usually accompanies artificial or corner
prices The arrivals nt nil western points
for the day reach ,100,01X1 bushels In round
numbers , or aluiit 200,000 bushels less than
the receipts on the corresponding ( lav last
year , when December was quoted at T J In
this market. About the strongest Doml the
bears have to show th.it contract wheat Is
relatively too high H the fact that No : i win
ter wheat is scllinu' in this market at fully ' 'Oc
below No. 2 sprint- There is no such
diiTeicncK in thu milling value of the
two grades , f'Mln ' mr > n say. Speculative
trade to day was largely local , and the vol
ume of business was not large. A notable
feature -v.ts the scarcity of December wheat.
\\henevcrnltempt.s weio madu to buy con-
siderahlo qualities , the the price was run up.
Theio seemed to be very little for sale.
This caused December to acjain j.'o to a pre
mium over May. May is now the favorite
trading month , probably two thiids of the
transactions in the pit being In that delivery.
December wheat opened at $1 12 , and May at
tThemniUut \ ! ! ' advanced to SI.lll'i ' for
December , and jl UtV 1 19'H ' for May ,
but subsequently worked nfl to tl.l- ' <
for both mouths. Prom that point thcio
was a rally of % c In December and : ie (
In May , followed by Rome later shrinkage ,
May K inK to fl.l'JV ' 1'ho innrkct may bo
said to have rumalned steady , him ever , until
JilHt before the close , around $1 l'Ji ( l.UY
for Decemberwith May quoted atasnmlldis-
count Closing ( | iiotations weio $1 124 for
December and H.1U'4M1 ' U'V for Maj. The
Hcntlment of the tr.ullng crowd is ovei-
whelmingly bearish and very few of the com
mission house's arc making especial efforts to
Invite business. This , however , decs not
neein to disturb the equanimity of the bull
leader * , who pel slat on standing pat on their
lines. They piofcss the utmost eontldcnco
in the correctness of tlielr position and hold
that export or no export America can bo relied
on to take pay for and ( oiisuine all the good
Hour that can bo produced The opposing
interests aiu getting in a stubborn .state and
nro seemingly bent on a trial of endurance.
Trade IH looking forwaid to a season of dull
ness , but this IH only to have been expected
after the gieat excitement of tne past month.
A rent Is sometimes good medicine , though
not to the lining of the speculative interests.
Corn opened steady at the closing prices of
the daj before for near futures , and at a
fractional advance on the more deferred.
Opening prices on the moro m live deliver
ies were : November , -W e ; Decem
ber , -10 c , and May : i'.i'ac ' Theio
was a good demand for November ,
which cairlcd it In a shoit time
to ll'4C ' , and on free offerings at that figure
It worked back ng.im to l.tO | , whcro it re
mained the major part of the dnv dull nnd in
active , trading being coiillned largely to the
ecalping fraternity , and without special sig
nificance. ICxpoils were smaller , but ICu-
glish markets lumaincd linn und appeared to
i cqulro considerable quantities of American
corn. The closing price of November ii'c :
shows no change from yeslciday. but De
cember , closing nt 10lBeear at Kiv ! and
May nt.TJ'tGI.'I'.l'i'c ' ' , show all slightly under
the closing prices of Thursday.
A fuithcr firmness was noted In near
the futures In oats owing to sympathy with
strength in corn , while May was nearly
steady. The volume of trading was small ,
with u llttlo moro interest displujod in this
nnd the next month than earlier in the week ,
while December and year were both dull.
May nold within a narrow range , which was
much the game as that of jestcrdny , with
nbout V > advance .scored In near months.
Trading in cash lots was chiefly by sample ,

In provisions trade again showed the pos
session of a strong undertone. The market
opened ntrong , commanded throughout u
good general support and , as a rule , averaged
nnd closed higher than yesterday. In Octo
ber lard , year pork and October short ribs
the day's advance was 12 } c , in November

During the forenoon thcro was a moderate

At noon the market was active and strong at
the highest prices reached. The severe break

slow. Tha packers bought quite freely of

There were more feeders and more buyers
for that class of eattlo on the market than for
several days past. The number of feeders

There was net much o'a tin go in the market
