they are warranted In malting a standing by
the broad assertion that prices are only kept
on their present basis by artllleial means and

tune with the foreign markets ; that

enough to last three or four mouths ;
that the demand for all grades of Hour , and
notoriously for the lower grades , has fallen

elapse before renewed inquiry on a largo
scale can bo looked for to supply homo con
sumptive needs. They refer to the daily re-

export trade has como to practically 11 dead
fctop , and to cables to substantiate- the state
ment that the old world has too full a Mom-
iieh and too much old wlio.it in reach to bo
alarmed about supplies for a long timcahe.id.
The bears admit that crops are short at home
und abroad , but they hold that the persist
ence in attempts to maintain values at this
stage of the crop year so high that
neither wheat nor its products
can bo exported can only re
sult disastrously ami In the accumulation
of a big surplus at the "heel" of the year
when the stock should be low. They admit
that speculative capital can carry specula
tive grades of wheat until consumers again
begin to take fancy Hours at high prices , but
they pertinently Inquire , "Will not specula
tive capital get tired before the end of the
journey and want to get out and take a
rest ! " Numerically the boars are largely in
the majority in the grain trade at this junc
ture not "bears on the crop" but bears for
u healthy reaction , that American market"
may recede to a point that will relieve the
pressure and render a further advance later
on easy and natural. "Are we Independent

uro going around asking each other
in a whisper. The market clearly has two
Bides now. The bull party is on the defen
sive and the bears are otico more assuming
mi agirressivo attitude and fortifying their
position with arguments that are morn or
lens Influential more so certainly than when
the bull fever was on and prices were lOc
higher. Fears of manipulation in December
seem to be subsiding , though the existence
of u large short interest in Unit month is still
fdiown by the failure of December to assume
its natural relation with May. To bo sure
the difference widened considerably to-day
nnil December shorts arc displaying less
nervousness than they have done lately , but
the trades uro a long way from being evened
up. The drift of the market the lust hour
was down and just before the close
prices worn at the inside range reached on
the early break. December worked off to

the session December was a quarter over
May , but it was at a discount ofct ( o most

The great bulk of trading was by scalpers ,
and their disposition was to sell the market
off. They are still very "skittish , " however ,
and run at the first sign of danger. On the
upturns the market tiavols about ten times
an fast as on the downturns. This la largely
duo to the nervousness of the shorts , who
recognize the ability of the leading
longs to twibt them whenever disposed ,
The closing range was nearly lo lowci
than yesterday on near futures and
very little changed from yesterday on May ,
The public is not taking a very largo inter
est in wheat at this moment and is appar-
unlly waiting for the break which it has
been led to believe is imminent.
There was a good demand for corn at the
opening of the market , induced by receipts
showing up less than yesterday's ' estimates ,
together with wet weather , which continues
to threaten small receipts of No. 2. The
brokers of a prominent operator were
botti buying and selling and the actioi
of the market , for the most part , was a re
flection of the efforts of local speculators tc
follow the rather obscure lead of the afore
said pnrty. The receipts for to-morrow
being estimated as high as 730 cars
crtused a weaker feeling to prevail aboul
noon and caused the market to sell off aboul
Ic from its high point. The lower tendency
of wheat also , In the latter half of the ECS
tdon , conti ibuted to thcodeclino and causet
the latest prices to bo around the lowest o.

spasm of weakness early In the day , but the
recovery was prompt and the tone became
moro linn. 1'rices during the forenoon
showed but little variation. London was a
moderate buyer , but the transactions were
nut productive of anything interesting. At
noon the market was very dull and steady ,
generally at about ttiu opening figures.
Union 1'iicillc was the strongest feature , and
this helped the remainder of the list. The
favorable "bowing of Oregon Short Line for
August was an Important factor in this
strength manifested. The bu\ing was by
Work , Strong & Co. and Moston houses , ntul
block advanced to Chi4 , closing at 05 , u gum
of neaily two points. Missouri 1'acille WHS
weak , with a number of bear points on it.
Mr. ( ioulti was credited with a large share
in the depression. The close showed several
stocks * tnpoint \ higher and many not ma
terially changed.

The trade m feeders wus very slow. The
supply of feeders was Unlit , then1 being very
few liesh natives and not many westerns
that were at all desirable.

A few sales of the best heavy hogs were
made eaily at about steady prices , but usido
from th.it tlic market opened lower. As the
later trams continued to roll up the rm-eipls
the market grew weaker and closed a strong *
llli1 lower. Although the market hero has
been ucing lower every day since Monday ,
the dei-liiie has been no inoro than at Chi
cago. Hogs sold on this market within 80o
of the extreme top in Chicago.
The receipts wore heavy , but the market
was slow.

It took the buyers a long white to break the
hog market , but now that it is fairly started
on the down grade there is no tolling where
