THE OMAHA .DAILY BEE : THURSPAY , OCTOBER 38. 18Sa THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , Wheat Ruloo Dull and Rnthor Nar row But Firm. "OLD HUTCH" STILL HOLDING ON. Corn Ijowor In Hympnthy With Wheat IjlRht Trading In Outs Provln- long More Active Cntllo Knlr Hogs Weaker. CHICAGO IMIODUCR MAHKtiT. CIIICAOO , Oct. 7. | Special Telegram to THE HUB 1 KpeculiUively the wheat market was dull anil rather narrow to-day. It opened nt some Improvement In prices as compared with yesterday , Initial quotations for Upccmber and May being at $1 14 and II 14tf respectively. The market sold ofl Bharply Ic for December and J c for May , and later there wai ti further dec-lino to I ! \0) for November , ? 1 li' ! ' for December and tl 13 ff for May. The subsequent course of the market was decidedly upward , and the Ultimo from le under yesterday's ' closing prices advanced to Ic above. May averaged probably J e over December , but suver.il 1 mm during the pi ogress of trading little flurries in December carried it up light nlongHldo the latter delivery. A sudden brrak at the close landed prices at the bottom tom again. Not a few of the bulls who had drawn out in the expectation that prices would gravitate back to tl 00 are picking up wheat on minor breaks , and they have seem ingly raised their low water mark from $1.00 totl.10. The public , whiih was systemat ically warned to keep out of wheat until the artlllciallti got out of values , is slower com ing in , but the idea seems to bo Kpreading that there is more safety in prices above $1.10 than has been generally believed to have been the ease , uml that until receipts of bet ter grades show a very decided increase the bottom is not likely to fall out of prices. The npeculativo investment demand for wheat is of a moat substantial kind , and so long as stocks of contract grade keep down so low the bears may experience the same diniculty in the future that they did last month in shaking the detci mined longs out of the mar ket. The position taken by Hutchinson two months ago lias not changed , and that is the position a great many of his fol lowers , besides bulls of Independ ent thought , take , although their Interests may be more centered in futures than his. He said : " 1 believe that every month between now and the next crop will ncll nt $1 " 5 or over. Whatever I may do in the meantime , and whatever side of the mar ket 1 may appear to bo on , .you may dei > end vpou it tnat I will keep a large interest in cash wheat because I believe it to lie good property. " Wbilo ho continues to entci tain the opinion that wheat is "good propeity , " bo will be slow In letting go his grip on it. "Old Hutch's" views on what constitutes "good pioperty" lire not subject to thufrc.iky variations that sometimes distinguish his scalping operations. The last hour of the BCHslon was the busiest season of the day. Prices worked off about lo up to 12 DO. The scalpcis who had bought on the previous break and up-tnrn were the principal sellers. Who the buyers weie could not be readily seen. The crowd credited the "I'illsbury-Hutcliinson- Falrbank combination" with a good sharp of buying , but there was little to show that these people were doing anything , .lust before - fore the close the m.irlcet tuincd down shnrplv , December bie.iking to fl.l2'H , and May to $1.1 ! ) , closing there. This is Mib- Btantlally the inside range for the da } ' , and was a great surprise to the crowd , the mar ket having been guaccd as "steady to strong.11 From * l.l 9 < ® l.ia # down to $1.12 % for December , there was scarcely a trade. Kveobody seemed anxious to sell , and at the moment buyers were all tilled up. The first quotations in corn were lower than the closing of the previous day by about * ( @ } 4c , principally in sympathy with the de clining tendency exhibited by wheat at the start. Hecolpts were heavy , as ex pected , which also tended to weakness , but exports were again largo , and the damp weather recently prevailing gives expecta tion of only small receipts of No. 2 corn from this crop during the present year. Thcro was a good demand for all futures this side of January , and oven May , at a discount of 5c from cash prices. There was a duller feeling In cable advices , and to-morrow's re ceipts , which wcro calculated at 530 cars , show no diminution of shipments from the old crop. The feeling , after the first weak ness , was strong throughout and the general uneasiness among the shorts kept prices banging around tno hit-best figures of the day toward the closo. The last quotations show gains on all futures , out near deliveries wore the strongest , November closing at , which is an advnneo on yesterday's prieo of ? (0iJfo ( ml May gained J < e , closing at SO c , but with sellers at that price. Trading in oats on the regular market was light , with little inquiry for near futures , while- May was a favorite. The feeling was steady and linn all along the line , with May touching a point \ @ c above yesterday's clone and the latter in fair request around 29) 0. The receipts and estimates for to morrow were both light , and the firmness in other cereals was a factor in the trade. Light business was done In No. 2 in store at Sl@ 24 V with samples in fair request. Provisions attracted u little inoro atten tion. Thcro was no marked activity In trad ing at any time , but there was evidently a bettor outsldo demand for January future , and the entire market showed Increased life. In a general way the feeling was also a little stronger , though the opening was bearish and at lower prices , and the closings weio in some instances a trlflo under yesterday's ' last quotations. October pork , jear lard and short ribs were quoted at the adjournment of change at unchanged llgurcs. October lard closed at a decline of 5c , October short ribs of 7J o and November pork , November lard nnd year pork of 2J c. CHICAGO lilVK STOCK. CHICAGO , Oct. IT. [ Special Telegram to THE UEK.I CATTLE. Business was fairly active and prices steady.
