CHICAGO , Oft. 13. ( Special Telegram to
THE Hr.r. 1 The fluctuations In December
wheat to-day were compressed within limits
of tl 1441.1 % > , a little less than 4c. May
changes did not extend beyond the range of
II HM1 li1 . May discounts went from 1 to
2c , greatly to the disgust of prolessional
etraddk'rs Indeed , it has not been a profit
able season for straddlors , no more than for
bears , except for such of them as proceeded
backward , like the crab , reversing their
usual tactics. Tl.ere was a wild and excited
opcnlmr Within the first three minutes the
price of December traveled from $1.17 lo
II ! > ) < and back to $1.10 , and within five
minutes thereafter it had gone back
to $1 IS and was on its way down to
C 14) | , which was the inside price of the day.
' /jay was le s yeasty , but it moved from 51.10
toil n > 4 , while December was making its
Initial spurt and it worked down to $1.14
with occasional violent reactionary spasms
rallying nearly Ic from the inside. The cany
strength may not be inaptly termed a contin
uation of yesterday's boom. Shorts and bull
ncalpers were more eager buyers. They com
prised the lleet-footcd quarter horse of spec
ulation. Come what might , they were not
going to be left. From the Jump the crowd
wus crammi'd with "long wheat. " It came
out in a flood and overwhelmed the
market. The mass of it was sold
at about top figures. The market
was smashed flat under pressure and
as prices kept sliding down the crowd turned
en masse and sold. At the bottom the selling
was especially vigorous. It was not until
the market looked as though it was going all
to pieces , and prices were pointed unerringly
to $1 10 , that the bears regained a full mea
ure of confidence. It was then that early
sellers became buyers , and an immense
amount of wheat was absorbed before the
crowd "got onto" the changed condition. A
scramble ensued , December climbing rapidly
to $1.17 > 4and May following more slowly 1 %
(32c ( behind. Speculative values did not hold
at the lull outside , but they were
not again suffered to slip back as
far as previously , and trading for the
last hour was on a basis of passable
steadiness , if ttiat term may be applied to a
market that is in a state of continual ner
vousness. Dealings , though not up to the
overage of some of the big day * , are large in
the aggregate. The market Is not narrow , as
some assume. It is a bier , broad market and
there is less of "gambie" in it than there
was when operators of small means were ac
customed to take largo lines because
fluctuations were small. Trade rapidly adJusts -
Justs itself to tin1 altered conditions and the
great popular interest in the market is shown
Dy the vastncfs of the aggregated trans
actions. As for Hutchlnson he is still in
the market on a large scale , but he
gets ten times the credit ho is entitled
to for the movement of values. He is
only ono big man among many.
The long interest \\ldelydistributednot
only in late futures but also m December.
The market is unquestionably heavily over
sold for December. That does not mean a
"corner , " but it means that some of the
snorts are exceedingly nervous over the
prospect and it may result in the abandon
ment of December for May by sealers
sooner than would ordinarily be the case.
The rest of the market was relatively weaker
than December to-day and a good deal of
business was done in the way of filling De
cember contracts and putting out new lines
for May. That , may have accounted
to some extent for the widening
of the difference between the two months.
During the forenoon Orr worked a cargo
of spring wheat ( not No. 1 hard , as some had
It ) for Buffalo at 81.30 c. i. f. This is equiv
alent to a lOc premium over December In
Chicago. Closing prices hero are a shade
lower than yesterday for December and fully
Ic off for May.
Corn was freely sold at the opening by
parties who have been regular buj ers of
lute and declined in early dealings sc under
the closing figures of the day before. The
demand for export continues to take out
moderate quantities , as is seen in the figures
of clearings from Atlantic ix > rts. and the
bhipplng demand at this | K > mt is fairly good ,
representing a free consumptive use of the
articles in home markets at present prices.
The speculative values of No. 2 , however ,
are governed more by a fear of manipulation
In near months than from any other cause ,
future largo supplies from this year's abun
dant crop influencing mainly futures com
mencing with January of next year. Re
ceipts were within two cars of the exported
quantity and for to-morrow promise to be
fctill larger , being figured at 600 cars. The
large receipts helped , of course , to weaken
values , but the fear of manipulation causes
short sellers to exercise considerable caution.
The average of the day's business was at lower
figures than yesterday and tno close was
weak at 45l4' < 3-l5J4'c for November , being a
loss of * @ ; 4c smca yesterday , May closing
level with its price at the closing hour on the
previous day.
Speculative trading In oats was confined
* hielly to the May option which was more
active , ruling irregularly higher , while near
futures were quiet and rather dull though
firmer , with ' 4@cadvance. Under spirited
bidding , which was attributed to the shorts ,
May sold up to 29 fc after an easy opening
with light trading at that Jipure and a subse
quent reaction to sypfaSO c , duo to free
yelling. No. 2 oats in store were c higher
at 24Sc , with seller the month at nearly the
same figure.
In provisions the day's business was
without special feature. Hutchinson ,
early In the session , bought considerable
pork for January , but later he took ad vantage
cf the strong market and unleaded the bulk
o. " his purchases. In general trading
there was no marked activity and for several
days just operators acted as if they were un
decided about the future of trade. Prices ,
however , received better support than yes-
tcrday , and at the adjournment of 'change
November pork , January lard and January
short ribs showed an advance of 2J c and
November lard , year pork and January pork
of "Ku. The October product was quiet and
unchanged.

FINANCIAL
NEW YORK , Oct. 12. [ Special Telegram
to THE BnE.l STOCKS The stock market
was dull this morning almost to stagnation.
New England and cotton oil certificates
were the only securities that showed any an
imation to speak of , the latter being strong
and advancing somewhat. Gossip attributed
buying In this to parties closely identified
with the property , but further than this
there was nothing current as to any especial
feature. St. Paul & Lhiluth was weak on
light transactions nnd up to 11 o'clock had
declined l1 points. London sent some buy
ing orders , but the market was in a rut and
the volume of business up to noon was very
small. At 12 o'clock the market was ex
tremely dull and steady at about opening
figures. With the foregoing exceptions it
proved to be a very dull day throughout.
The advance in cotton oil over the opening
amounted to 1 Mints. The rest of the list ,
except St Paul Jt Duluth , which lost 3'tf
points , closed at or near the opening fipurcs.

referred to the elder Ruysschaert as a thief ,
and the son promptly knocked him down.
Reddmpton came to the scratch and was
knocked down , and as often as he arose he
was laid low. Ruysschaert claimed that
Reddmpton forced the matter on him , but
Uikinp into consideration that he had struck
the first blow he was fined ? 20 and costs ,
which was promptly paid by his father The
Ruysschaerts threaten to have Reddington
arrested far assault , and have employed an
attorney to that end.
