O'IIB litx.l-Tho strain relaxed to-duy and
llio wheat market assumed n quieter tone ,
although great nervousness was still felt.
Thm was nothing , however , compared to the
thrco preceding days of the week. Trade is
feeling Its way now and taking account of
stock. The wildness In the market was
chiefly around the opening. The start gave
promise of ntnther day of "niz7.loda7.zlcs , "
but the feverish excitement was short lived ,
nnd thereafter indisposition to price gymnas
tics WHS the rule. Around the hcginnlng
Miiy displayed relatively more strength than
December or liny of the near futures , nnd as
'ho fccbfcion advanced this feature became
more marked. The ofilcial opening was given
nt tl.l24 ! { for November , $1.14 for December
nnti $1.13 for May. This range was J < fSlo (
nbovc yesterday's closing quotations , though
in the ofllccs yesterday December sold down
to ? I.10J nnd up to (1.14)1. There- was
Homo ragged trading around the opening ,
i4' @ } < j'c , nway from the official record of fiuo-
tatlons , but , as before stated , a quiet feeling
controlled and before 12 o'clock the hand on
the indicator was observed to linger on
eighths nnd even on "splits , " something It
had not done before in thrco days. Kor the
first hour December fluctuated between the
limits of $1 HQil.l'J ; later $ l.ii@l.l'i : became
the battle ground , and still later S1.12@l. 11.
The market seemed to be slowly settling. It
WAS a natural relaxation after a season of
tremendous excitement. May ranged down
to f 1 12 , but the difference between that de
livery and December widened little by little
After 12 o'clock , when December stood nt
i.11 'j ' , und May was selling at $ M2Jf , No
vember being Ic discount from December.
Hutchinson was n largo seller ot December
wheat , und to-day , as on yesterday and Tues
day , ho delivered considerable wheat on Oc
tober contracts. The weight of cash wheat
was so great nt ono time that October went
to u discount of lij c under December.
The iiverago discount was about tc. !
in the lunguago of a commission merchant :
"Cash wheat is kicking around , nobody
Wanted it. " Somebody wanted it , however.
It was very generally scattered among com
mission houses. Judging from surlaco in
dications , Uutchin&on scorns to be closing
( "it his Arhuut trades. Like everybody else ,
ill ) probably wants to have a "round-up" to
sec how ho stands. This policy prevails
among the rank and file of members of the
board. To-day was the first resting place
that has been enjoyed for n good while. People
ple are actually beginning to consider statis
tics , and separate wild rumor and gossip and
opinion from truth and sense , and to reason
soberly over the situation. They are begin
ning to remember that the visible supply is
larger than it was last year at this date ; that
the price islOc per bushel higher ; that the
export business has entirely stopped , and
that the advance now cannot be on nn actual
famine , however great the scarcity may be
six , eight or ten months hence. They are
stopping to think that perhaps It might
bo well not to press the advance too strongly
on fear of famine while there is a present
moderate supply. It may bo that trade as n
whole Is not yet in n spirit to move with
moderation. The public is enthusiastic and
excited over this wonderful advance , ami the
public has been known to run away with the
speculative market after it hivs been aban
doned by professionals. However , this is
only speculation on paper. Toward the close
to-day the market steadied at a partial re
covery from the inside range. There was an
inllus of outside business , accompanied by a
visible renewal of excitement , but riot on a
magnified scale. Outside domestic markets
nil rule lower than yesterday , and the frenzy
lias passed away to n great extent , though
the echoes are still rumbling. Foreign
markets do not show n particularly milled
front. There has been n , great lot of long
wheat sold out during the past forty-eiirht
hours at heavy profits , and the crowd is now
engaged in the labor of absorbing and digest
ing the load. The feeling on 'change favors
u further reaction. It remain ! ! to bo seen
whether the country will let the market
down.
The opening trade in corn showed gains
over yesterday's close of KS c in October
and November , and from j < , c in December to
lie in May. Trading was characterized by a
good deal of excitement , and seemed gov
erned in n great measure by local considera
tions. The usual governing Influences of re
ceipts and shipments and the probable sup
ply in the near futures are in
n great measure Ignored , and the
possibilities of manipulation in the present
nnd next month's deliveries arc more re-
giinled than the factors which are usually
actuating trade. The prospects of a good expert -
port demand continue , and a fair quantity
moved from the Atlantic seaboard yesterday ,
with firm markets prevailing in England.
The early selling was succeeded by eager
buying toward the close , making
final prices on near futures show
good advances on Wednesday's
closing figures. October und November
gained from .3@Sfe , while year , December
und May made only nomonal gains.
Oats opened fairly active and firm , with
May touching 2'JKo ' and the next month
5' ' c , but soon followed the lead in other
principal grains , ruling lower , with dullness
marking trade and u )4G ) $ e decline for most
futures. Receipts slightly exceeded the es
timate ! ) with about 20 per cent of the total
grading No. S and No. 2 white. Transactions
were ctiielly In November mid May , which
fluctuated within j 'o range , while regular
cash outs wcro dull , with a few curs of No. 2
in store or to go there selling at 245i24\c , or
nearly J4c below the Inside prices of yester
day. Most of the busintsj in cash oats was
ill samples ,
In provisions there was les excitement
nnd more restricted trading. The January
product , particularly pork , was bought
pretty freely for investment , but in near
deliveries trade was quito slow , the demand
from shorts being smaller than for some
days past. The general business was con
siderably under yesterday's volume , and in
October iiml November property the feeling
was a llttlo bearish For October pork the
ilay's closing showed a decline of 15c , for
October lard of ti2Ko , for November pork of
l ! > i'o and for November lard of 7 > jO. Octo
ber short ribs were advanced Just before the
close to yesterday's Jinnl quotation. January
was well supported , closing unchanged for
short ribs , 2&c easier for lard and 2 o
higher for pork.

Ijlvo Stock Notes.
Hogs close lOc lower.
Miu-lon Wukellclil , of Atlantic , la. , Is here
looking for feeding steers.
The top jirico to-day crawled up pretty
close to ChicQKo'B outsidelimit. .
Joe Ilochsteln came down from Ilartington
to-day with u load of butchers' Block.
The receipts of euttlo wcro considerably
lighter to-day than those of the past few
days ,
The report that the prices on hogs at Chicago
cage were much lower did not affect the mar
ket materially her > > , as about everything had
been sold before the news reached bore.
Gould & liaker topped the market once
more with a prime load of heavy weights
that sold at to.50. This is as high a price ai
has ever been paid on this market for hogs.
There are signs of gradual improvement in
the cnttlo trade on anything suitable for
dressed beef purposes. Even with markets
furnished with an average supply , the trade
is surely strengthening on good cattle.
OMAHA. WHOLESALE MAUKETS.
Produce , FrultH , 1C to.
Trade keeps very good , and there are but
few fluctuations to note In prices , except in
produce. Flour is excited and higher. Su
gars are off and refiners are quoting lower
prices. Coffees are somewhat higher , hut
local Jobbers have made but few changes in
their quotations.
