THE FOREIGN MARKETS EXCITED. The Advance In J'rlcon of tlic Itnttt X\vo Days Caused ljr ) Covcrlnits for I" < ircln ( Auoount Corn CHICAGO IMIODUCK MAHKKT. Oct. S , | Special Telegram to TUB Hi.n.l A few minutes before the close yesterday afternoon a 60iO ( ( ) bushel lot of wheat for December delivery was sold at ( l.US > . Within live minutes from the open ing this morning the same M,000 ) bushel lot was bought back at fcl.f.8 by the patty who sold It. Twenty-four hours before this last trade occurred the market was $1.0l5f. Ten dnyn ago the market wus 02@l'3c ' People who have been selling wheat for three months on Dodge's estimate of 440.000tXK ) bushels tried to buy It nil back In ten days- most of them within a period of four days nnd Ms ! is the result. The wheat market opened it $1.11 for December and $1.12 for May. T > l.Us ! what the ofllcial record made the Initial range. If brokeis and commis sion merchants got wheat within 2@3c of those figures they counted themselves lucky. Within six minutes of the opening December traveled from $1.11 to $1.18 , nnd back to $1.11J . Thereafter it ranged from ft.14 % to (1.18 , most of the business being done between -1.15 nnd $1.17 up to 12 o'clock. May and December stayed close together during n largo part of the session. Once , however , during the first eventful six min utes , Maj tore away nnd went to $1.19l < f , but no record of trades appear at that figure. Some very remarkable stories nro told of happenings in the pit around the opening. There were trades 2c apart In different parts if the pit at the same moment. Tlie wit who said the snniitct opened yesterday at "Jl.OIJf ( Jitl.Osi on the split , " would have been" nearer right to-day if ho had said it opened nt "tl ll@l.IS on the split. " This proves that the tremendous excitement In wheat is not confined to Chicago cage , nnd that it is not of local manufacture it IH only necessary to look at quotations from other markets. Koieign mantels are nt length taking a decided interest in the situa tion here , and in other American markets. . hey are quoted as excited nnd higher all nrouml , especially for American wheat. During the past few days , and notably since the successful conclusion of the September detil , foreigners have been covering their short wheat In Chicago nnd elsewhere. There was more force to the arguments ad vanced by Ilutchlnson than there was in all the reports of short cinps and bulging prices In the northwist. That was nn nrgninent that could be seen as well as heard. Orders to cover shorts in later months fol lowed. The rout of shorts turned Into a panic , from the effects of which New York and foreigners suffered most severely. The advance of the last two dnys has been caused very largely by coverings for for eign account. Some of the local nnd Now York heavy weight plungers helped the price up on them. The uurden of the enor mous losses that have occurred lately has clearly fallen on people who could stand it. The accumulations years of must have molted rvway very rapidly , but the losses have been met with astonishing promptitude most cases though the rapidity of the advance has been nsovcio trial to the commission trade in general. Nothing could better illustrate the financial solidity of rank nnd tllo of commis sion houses than the record of the past week. Two failures , both the direct result of the September corner , nro the only "accidents , " Just before the close the mar ket slid off violently again from $1.18' to $1.12) ) 1.13 for December in about half an hour , the last 3 cent drop being swift. No especial reason for the break was given. The i same people who considered OOo a bulge n few weeks ngo , were talking of $1.18 ns nbad break to-day. Trade hns been narrowed con siderably during the Inst three days , and commission merchants continue to pursue a conscrviitivo policy , They nro not looking for business ntul minimize risks to the limit. There still remain big lines of short wheat that have not been touched , nnd there nro also big lines of long wheat that have not been sold out. Hutchinson is believed to linve diminished his line greatly on the ad vance. The feeling after the close was fever ish , but conservative forces are at work to restore quiet. "In ofllces , " nfter 'change , there was some trading at a still further shrinkage than is indicutcd by the final range. The corn market caught the infections from adjoining pits and opened feverish and excited at from l@U c advance on near op tions , but more remote were comparatively steady , May opening Uc better and Decem ber nnd year about Xo over the closing prices of yesterday. Seeing the wildness of the wheat market the short sellers of No vember corn took alarm , and from the open ing price of 44 0 that option was soon selling at 4 ? > c , and almost as quickly sold back again to 445/c. The weather was magnificent nnd favorable to early grading of now corn. The receipts largely exceeded the shipments , and exports were quite moderate. The governing - * orning feature wus the possibility of a squeeze on' near deliveries , and that out weighed nil other consideration , making the shorts free buyers. The volume of business was much larger than of Into and price changes were much heavier und more sud den. The closing market wus affected by the apparent weakening in corn to so mo ex tent , but near futures show gains for the day of ? 4 ( < < ! lJ e , and more remote from Jc lower on Klay to ! o gain In December , but nil futures hud more sellers than buyers at the close. After n long period of inertness the oat market to-day responded to the strength in other cereals nnd ruled irregularly higher , with cash and near futures advancing l.'ift ' 29. The opening was firm and the subse quent activity and marked advance was at tributed to a general bullish feeling else where , with nn unusual volume of trading nil along the line. Receipts to-day und esti mates for to-morrow were both only moder ate , and No , 2 cash on the regular market sold up about lcto2l9i' ( < i'2.I4C , with trading chiefly by sample. The closing was weaker. Provision traders had another busy day. From the start the market was active , nnd ns the feeling wus nervous nnd prices Irregular , nn unusual In terest was exhibited In its movmcnt. In trad ing the January products , especially pork , at tracted the principal attentionthough nearer futures were in good demand by shorts and parties engaged in transferring outstanding contracts. Trade was governed by the same influences as yesterday light hog receipts and unfavorable news from the country nbout the "hog crop" being the leading fac tors In shaping the course of values. Prices all around averaged higher , but the udvaticcs obtained during 'change was not sustained. The closings in some instances even showed a decline. The lust quotutions for October pork were 25o and for year } c lower than yesterday's final prices. November lurd closed unchanged , but in November pork an ndvanco of 42o was established , in October short ribs 15c , in year pork 5Kc , in January pork ! ! 0c , m January lurd 6c , and In January short ribs 12 > < c.
