THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SATURDAY , SEPTEMBER 29. 18Sa THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , Hutchlnson's Wheat Prophecy Seems Llkoly to Bo Realised. CASH ANDSEPTEMBER REACH l.BO Btiorta Crowing Obstinate More Ac tivity In Corn Provisions NcrvouH No Mntcrlnl Ctianco In Cut- . tic HOKS HrUk. CHICAGO PIl&OUCE MARKI-2T. CHICAGO , Sept. 23. [ Special Telegram to TUB UEI : . ] Cash and September wheat ex perienced another phonomlnal rise In prlco to-dny , going from $1.2j to f 1.60 per bushel. At thnt figure a lively business was done In the car lot crowd , but comparatively llttlo trailing was done In settlement of September contracts. The people who are holding out seem to bo catting ready for n "grand kick.1 It was llatly stated mi the floor by parties representing unknown lines that they would not settle at 81. M , and would not put up margins above $1.25. A tpcluilc.il case has been built up at every Mage of the deal by Hutohlnsonbut the belligerent shorts say they will Imvo no trouble In establishing the fact that any price for wheat In this market above f 1.25 will bo a "corner price. " They concede that with wheat at fl.lii lit Minne apolis. HiitchlufiOti may psrhaps be able to cnforco settlement of contracts up to $1.25 , but that anything over that will bo extortion. Feeling ran high to-day and considerable bitterness was show.i. Hutchlnson , on the other hand , intimates very broadly that the price to-morrow will bo $1.75 or $2.00. Ho Bays In self-defense , or rather his henchmen nay for him , that "tho boys shouldn't feel hard toward htm , as ho ho hasn't called any body for ti nrgius and don't Intend to. " All the same , houses standing In the gap have been obliged to both call and put up heavy margins on open contracts and they nro feeling sere over It. Shortly before 1 o'clock when September wheat was being offered In the pit nt $1.50 by several parties , Ilutchlnsan refused to sell wheat at $1.75 , n bid to that effect having been made. It was subsequently stated that this was a "funny bid , " being made and received us fitich. Hntchlnson was selling wheat In set tlement a minute before and a mlnuto after wards at $1.50 , and his man were paying 11.40 for car lots. The old gentleman was very irrltablo most of the session , and several times was imulo the target of pretty plain talk by wrathful members. At 1:15 : the quo tation for September wheat was il.4' > K' It was stated that 200 car loads of wheat from St. Louis will arrive this evening and bo de livered on September contracts , and that a 25,000-bushcl lot is on the way hero from Milwaukee. The Bpcculativo market was nervous all day , but the volume of trading was not abnormally large. There was very free realizing early in the day , and also to ward the last of the session , the lougs feeling that perhaps It might bo best under the cir cumstances to take the profits. The market around ttuxopcning was strong and le higher for December , May and October. December was in active request at llijS o and May at fl.01J.fc. There was a Hood of scattering outside orders for general account. When the demand from tb.it quarter was satisfied December worked down from ? l.OOJ to Wfo } , May from $1.0 % to * 1-UU < and October from $1.03 to y'JJfc. ' The selling out of long wheat was general and on a largo scale. The market rallied to $ i.K ( ) for October , OJXc for Decem ber and Sl.OlJi for May , but toward the end the whole market weakened under free selling by Hutchinsou and others and last prices were within a fraction of the lowest point of the day. The break at the last was inoro than le , December declining to OSJ c and May to Sl.OOjrf. Last prices were 08Jf e for Octo- * bcr , OSJ e for December and SU ( % for May. The range of prices for the day on futures WUB " % ( < c'A-c. } The sentiment seems to favor the theory Unit there will bo a break in prices after the September deal is off the hooks , and that accounted in a largo measure for the generous unloading of long prcperty. Should that anticipation not be realized an influx of outside business may follow such at least is the popular belief on 'change. At the opening of the corn market there was a general scramble for October and No vember , October opening } ° better and No vember where it clo cd the previous day. Seller the month was about on a par with October and the far off deliveries were firm nnd gained for the day from } 4c on May to % e on December and year. Active buying for an operator who is supposed to own the bulk of the corn in store was the principal causa of the advance and withstood the con trary influences of favorable curing weather for now corn. In oats the feeling was rather heavy , with limited trading within a very narrow range averaging nearly steady. There was an in crease in receipts nnd with estimated arrivals for to-morrow of 318 cars and the dullness In corn no activity was displayed. There was some changing of October contracts in May at ijfs premium for the latter , with that month selling in a regular way ats > 8@ 2S > { c. Cash No. - oats in store or to go to store > vorn steady nt 23c , with a great part of the trade in samples. Tho' provision trade was qulto nervous. The shorts , frightened perhaps by the nqucozo in wheat , opened the day with good buying for October product. The demand from this class of buyers fora tlmo was quite urgent , and for pork the price was advanced 70o over yesterday's closing. Lard for Octo ber was also marked up 12 > < o and thort ribs lOc. The rlso in October naturally affected the entire market and the boom witnessed was shared in by later deliveries to a more or less ex tent. As the session progressed , however , sm easier feeling was developed. More anxious shorts having covered trade lost its main support , and us Hutchluson offered short ribs and pork freely t'or January pi-leas all around receded almost as fast as they Im proved early , Break followed break and * the closings in some Instances were oven under opening figures. During the last hall of the day business was also comparatively moderate. Bused on yesterday's final quota tions October pork closed at au advance ol lOo , October lard and short ribs of 5e , No vember | mrk and lard of 15e and year pork nnd lard ytfe. I'ork , lard and short ribs fet January rested unchanged. CHICAGO IjlVE STOCK. CHICAGO , Sept. 23. [ Special Telegram tc TUB BEE. ] CATTLB. OMAHA K STOCK. . Cattle. Friday , Sept. 2S. 18S3. The market for beef cattle was a drag all day. The reports from eiiftern markets in dicated a lower market for westerns , nnd that fact taken with the light demand made n very unsatisfactory market here. One of the heaviest packers was off from the market on account of receiving a train of cattle from his own ranch. A few feeders and cows changed hands at about steady prices. HOCK. Omaha is becoming a better sheep market every day and no ono with sheep to sell can afford to go by this market. Colonel W. H. Thompson , Chicago , came In with two loads of good native cows from Ewing , which sold at f3.40. H. P. Platt , of the live stock commission flrm at Chicago , Is tbo guest of his brother- in-law , G. W. Jackson , of the firm of Jack son & Co. Among the lady visitors at the yards to day were Mesdomes C. A. Henderson , J. T. Clark and A. Anderson. They took a tour through the packing houses as well. The well known flrm of Shaw & Co. , of Chicago , have in ado arrangements to open a branch office in the Exchange building. It will bo under the management of Johnson & Christian. Heports will be received direct from the Chicago board of trade and the firm will be prepared to do a general commission business in grain , provisions , stocks , etc. Arrangements aru being madn for a grand ball to bo hold at Armour & Cudahy's now office on Saturday evening of next week , The room la hardly largo enough to accom modate over fifty couples and for that reason the Invitations will necessarily be somewhat limited. Mr. Cudahy will furnish the supper for tbo company and as he never does any thing half way It will be a grand affair. OMAHA WIIOtiKSfelfp MAUKUTH. Protlttcc , 1-VtUO , Ktc.
