parade , In which the local lodge of locomotive
engineers , two lodges of firemen , two of
brakcmen nnd sixty-seven delegates from all
parUt of the states and Canada took part ,
und , after passing : through the principal
streets , adjourned to the Olympic theatre ,
whore Mayor Francis welcomed them on be
half of the city , and speeches were made by
cx-Govcrnor 1'ortcr , Oeorco S. llalley , James

they were the guests of the proprietor of the

Monnhnn und a design representing the pro
posed federation of railway men were en
thusiastically applauded by the audience.
The rest of thu time spent In St. Louts was
dcvotoJ strictly to business , but much that
was done has already appeared In the tele
graphic columns of Tut : linn.
Tlio convention was unanimously In favor
of the federation of railroad men , which
leaves each branch of Its business to bo con
trolled by its own members , until the ques
tion becomes so serious that nil tire Inter
ested ; or , m other words , until the respect
ive brunch Is unable to settle Its difllfttlty
with the company. Then delegates from
each branch of the service will meet und do-
cltle who Is to blame , nml If they decide In
favor of the branch In trouble , they will ap
peal to thu company In it body , and If that
appeal is neglected tha quarrel will bo taken
u by every branch of the service at once.
The ordots so far represented In the federa
tion nro the engineers , llrcmrm , switchmen ,
brahumon , telegraphers , nnd Knights of
Labor , and It Is thought the conductors will
full In line nt their , next convention. This
will bring the entire system of railroad em
ployes practically under ono management ,
nnd while they would make a powerful foe ,
each separata order will see that their posi
tions nro not needlessly Jeopardized by any
r.ish action on the part of the others. It
was nlso decided to raise the amount of ben-
eilt from ? riA ) to f-OJ , und the following oftl-

ner of Michigan street nnd Indiana avenue ,
whore the company has 150 by ! WX ) feet of
ground , The plnnt consists of n forty-horse-
lower engine , n slxty-horso boiler , two enor
mous melting kettles with a capacity of
10,000 gallons , for revolving drums for heat
ing material , etc. , the plant costing about
$ 'J5.000. A mountain of White river saint
rises on one side of the yard , while near by a
huge crusher , looking much like u greatly
overgrown old-fashioned coffee-mill , is turnIng -
Ing out broken limestone the size of a
hickory nut , or thereabouts , at the rate
of ten tons an hour. In prep irlng materials
for the street It goes through the process of
heating and mixing. The mixture , or distil
lates , composed of gas tar nnd other essen
tials , Is heated to 500 degrees. Stone Is added
to this , heated to the sumo degree. This mix
ture is carried in carts to the street and
put on hot at n temperature of liOO to ' . ' 50
degrees.
"Tho street is , in the llrst plnc3 , cut to a
grade given by the city civil engineer ; then ,
after being well rolled , seven Inches of
broken stone is placed thereon. This is well
saturated with hot distillate ; again well
rolled , and two Inches of broken stone.heateil
nnd mixed with distillate , Is applied , und well
rolled by the fifteen-ton roller. Upon this n
mixture of sand , stone dust , cement , sulphur ,
distillate mid nsphaltum , in proper proportions
tions , is laid. This last coat Is put on to the
thickness of three inches , which Is well
rolled to smooth surlnce , thus completing the
work. Within twenty-four hours or less the
street Is ready for use. After the successive
rollings the thickness of the completed road
way or vulcanite pavement Is nine Inches.
Thu Indianapolis Paving company employ
twenty-eight men nt Its works , and a like
foreo is required to put down the pavc'incnt.
It has taken about four weeks to get the

OUR STOCK OF SUITS
For Fall and Winter was never more extensive and varied than now. Mens and young
mens Suits have always been the most important part of our business. On the quality
of our Suits and the prices we sold them at , wo have built up our reputation. This
Fall wo have made speoial exertions to eclipse iu this line all our previous efforts and
wo can safely assert , that no choicer exhibition of Suits was ever made. Our stock
comprises all the leading styles and grades of goods. No description of qualities or
naming of prices in this advertisement can do it justice ; wo simply aim that'Every
Suit we sell shall be a walking advertisement for us.
One feature about our suit stock is , we keep only reliable goods ; wo handle no
shoddy or satinett suits. The cheapest suit we sell will be found to bo made of strong
and durable goods. The mate rial is not as fine as in the bettor grades , but it can bo
relied upon to wear well , and the mechanic and laboring man who buys a low and
medium priced suit of us will get as much satisfaction and be as well pleased with his
bargain as those who buy the finer grade goods.
Anotlier feature we want to mention is , that we can fit men of every build , from the
variety of shapes we carry. Wo keep "short and fat , " "long and slim" sizes especially
for customers who have always found it hard to get fitted , and the prices are the same
as for ordinary regular sizes.
