About fifty parsons are ex pected to bo present. Deputy Sheriff Wall McFaddcn vis ited Avoca yesterday to take out a wit ness to appear before the grantl jury. The witness was confined in the county jail here , and his testimony was needed to secure an indictment against another member of the same gang of lawbreak ers. ers.The nineteenth annual state conven tion of the Young Men's Christian asso ciation of the state of Iowa will bo hold at Maibhalltown October 10. The con vention continues four days. Mr. George S. Adams the local secretary , will fur nish all particulars respecting the meet ing. ing.The The contract for a hydraulic passen ger elevator for the government building - ' ing has been awarded to the Crane ele vator company of Chicago , the tame firm which 'furnished the elevator for the Ogden house. The price is $2,010. It is not known whether the elevator will bo operated by water di rect from the mains or forced by pumps in the basement to the top of the tow or. If the latter plan is adopted the same water may bo used continually. Work on the elevator is to bo begun at once , and as the well is now ready , it will bo but a short time until it is in working order. The pupils and teachers of the school of the sisters of charity went out to Big lake yesterday for their annual autumn picnic. There wore four bus loads of the pleasure-seekers , and they formed a merry party. The day was a most en joyable ono , and these participating found nothing lacking that could add to the pleasures of the day. Culver , adminis trator , vs. Union Pacific railway com pany , was on trial in the United Slates court yesterday. The action ifl brought to recover $20,000 damages for the killIng - Ing of George Rose , a switchman for merly In the employ of the defendant. Wynstor & Llndt appear for the plain tiff , and Wright , B.ildwln & Haldano are looking after the interests of the defendant. All of the evidence in the casowaslntroduccd yo tcrday , and the arguments will be madn to-day. Ono of the jurors was taken sick shortly after court convened In the afternoon , and was excused. The case of , Ta on Walker vs. City of Council BlulTs , otherwise the "Fair- mount park case , " Is the last on the cal endar. It is doubtful if it comes up for trial before the latter part of the term. The grand jury began work yesterday morning , but have returned no indict ments usot. . The case of State vs. Butler was on trial yesterday in the district court. The prisoner is charged with burglary and larceny , an indictment being found against him on each charge. His trial yesterday was on the latter charge. Ho was accused of breaking and entering the house of a farmer by the name of Smith on the Crescent City road during the absence of the family" Ho was de fended by B. W. Hight. The jury in the Barrett case returned a verdict of guilty , as charged in the indictment , of assault with intent to commit rape. Two indictments were returned against Barrett , but the other will probably bo dismissed. During the present term six prisoners Have pleaded guilty and will be sen tenced next Saturday. There are several - eral cases yet remaining to bo tried , but Colonel Dailoy expects -complete his work this wojk. The next case to Do tried is that of the Grosses , charged with complicity in the Garneau diamond mend robbery. A good article of tea for 23 cents at Fcaron's. J. G. The New Track. * The now track of the Omaha and Council Bluffs Bridge company on Broadway is being laid as fast as a largo force of men can put it down. The stone paving in the center of the street is all torn up , to make room for the proposed change. The change has been made as far east as Seventh street. The paving in the center of this thor oughfare has been in poor condition for some time , in fact the street was not in condition'when the paving was done , as the two-foot sewer underneath was but iust completed at the time. The fill ing over the sewer settled in time , and as a rchult there has been a depression in the center of the street over since. It is hoped that this will now bo reme died , as the paving has to be taken up , and rolaid. The bridge company is , working all of the men to bo obtained. The stone pavers began work yesterday afternoon , and are pushing the track layers. It Is thought that but ton days will bo required to complete the work to the Methodist church , where the double track will end. Money loanodjit L. B. EVANS. Too Fast a Horse. A serious accident occurred on Lowoi Broadway Tuesday evening , by which "Doc. " Roberts anU his brother were severely injured. They had hired j horse and buggy of Mr. James for the y purpose of taking a rldo. The animal s was a vicious one , and resented an O allliction of the whip by running away A collision with a lumber wagon re suited , and both occupants of the buggi were thrown out , receiving severe cut : and bruises on the curbing. The accl dent happened just below the water works pumping station , near the end o ' the paving. Th'o patrol wagon win summoned to convoy the injured partlo homo. "Doc. The record of fast running freight trains was broken yesterday on the Burlington , between this city and Cres- ton. A train load of stock belonging to Switt & Co. , made the run from Pacific Junction to Creston , n distance of eighty-six miles , in two hours and llfty- two minutes. The oflieials say that this is the fastest time over nuulo between these two points by any train , either freight or passenger. Briggs oc curred at U o'clock1 yesterday afternoon from the residence on Seventh street and was largely attended.
