THE Hin.J : Wheat opened l'tOlKo higher
than It closed yesterday arid advanced an
other IJ c and closc.l nt a llttlo reaction from
the ontsldu prices attained. There was ex
tensive rcallxing by tlio longs to-day and an
enormous covering of short whc.it by the
bear Interest. Thcro wiw also considerable
now buying by late Investors. First cables
wcro generally higher , nnd closing cables do
not Indicate thiit placidity of spirit on the
part of Die foreign grain trade which old
world ndvlcoi a few days ago pictured. For
eigners delight to bo considered languidly In
different to American markets , and they nrc
usually nt homo in that role. They saoin to
bo getting over their languor , however , if
reliance Is to btj placed on private cables.
Liverpool is quoted higher , and continental
markets are described ns excited , with n
greater disposition to bid for wheat. With
Chicago nnd eastern mark ; ts from 'J@l'Jc
nbovo the expott basis , and Dulutli and Min
neapolis lOc above Chicago , the
formality of bidding would seem
like an idle waits of energy ,
unless old world bidders expand their
views Buddcnlyor wo drop with u terrific
slump. Tlio northwest continues to bubble
over with native strength. Duluth bidl.l'J %
to-day for September , J1.10J.C for Doc-ember
nnd $1.1 ! ! for May. Keecipts show that the
attractivellgurcs lately ruling In Duluth do
not draw any considerable quantity of wheat
past Minneapolis. Tlio territlc advance in
prices at all primary markets may bo ex
pected to yield results presently in the shape
of a largely Increased movement from llrst
hands , unless It should bo that thcro Is no
wheat or that farmers are following the ad
vice that has been dinned into their cars from
nil quarters , and hold back for batter prices.
The next two or three weeks will lest the
temper of farmers on this point pretty
thoroughly. The opening was rugged. There
was trading In December nt WiJfOJJUTe , nnd in
May at' ) ' . ) , ! < , S'jyjje ' , ut the same moment in
different paits ol the pit. The market , slowly
but steadily ascended the scale until ! H'4o '
was reached for December and $1.01 for May.
.September went from Sl.tX ) to ? ! . ( , and Oc
tober soared to Vi } c. The advance was not
accompanied with as great excitement as
might have been expected , Trade was very
largo , the current running deep and
Btiong , but it was neither noisy nor
nproarous. The shorts were too earnest to
think of having a band precede them nnd tlio
bulls didn't have tlmo to think of It. From
the top range mentioned in the foregoing ,
the market worked back Ic , December going
to Oi ' . { u nnd May to 51.00. The bulk of trad
ing was within MOfJ < o of the top , however ,
nnd the market hud plenty of snap through
out. The wild and wooly bull feeling in the
noithwcst was the principal inspiration hero
for both bulls and bears. Tlio paeo for the
last few days has been exceedingly lapltl.
Hut there nro yet a few who have the temerity
to attempt to break Iho cm rent at thU stage.
The markets wt'ro too broad to-day for
special heed to bo paid to individual oper
ators , though some curiosity ns to what
HutPtiinson was doing was manifested , and
it was generally admitted that ho was a lib
eral seller. Ills realising , whether great or
Binall , produced no apparent effect. The
market was virile from start to llnish. Com
mission merchants did n big business to-day.
They did quite as much selling as buying.
The closing range was practically nt the lop
nnd fully 'Ji'o over yesterday's final quota
tions. Late cables rollcctcd tlio improve
ment hero , though in a minor key.
The corn market generally was under the
influence of the excitement In wheat. Ko-
ccipts wcro under expectations to the extent
of about 40 cars\vhich somewhat helped the
strength , nnd to-morrow's promise of only
473 cars was n further sllmulaling feature.
Trading was fairly active and closed nt the
best prices of the day. It opened quiet but
llrm , at an improvement of ? @ } c on pre
vious prices. There was not much life in
early trading until wheat had uiado a consid
erable advance , when the shorls took the
alarm and began biddinir briskly , which
quickly advanced the prlco le above tlio
opening for Iho Oclobcr option. Tlio opening
prieo for October was ut 41c , with a few
sales nt 4u. ( It soon advanced to 4'J > < c and
sold off again tollj < c , but near the close
again became quite stron gaud mado42 u for
October , which was the best price of the day.
November closed at a discount of Ij c from
October , nnd December and year each gained
l4'c } on yeslerday's last quotation , Iho 11 mil
price to-day being 'JS\s. \ May closed
Oats wcro moderately active early In the
session , ruling quiet later nnd averaging n
fraction higher than yesterday. Receipts
continue- Liberal , but at the same time the
day's advance in corn was suftlclent to
call out a litllo strength in this cereal with
most of the trading in May , which sold up to
Vc. Cash and near futures showed a slight
improvement with some buying to cover
shorts , while intermediate mouths were dull ,
with no influence lo induce buy ing nsldo from
that already noted. Fair business was done
in No. 2 In store at ! 3i23 ( > c , or © .Ifo ad
vance , with cash sales chiotly by samples.
The provision Irado was considerably
stronger. No great activity , characterized
trading , yet for near und forward delivery
the bull side was retarded in a remarkably
friendly way , and the entire market was
better supported llian for several days. The
uneasiness which Iho yellow fever
news has lalely occasioned disap
peared lo n great extent , and In its
place quite u confident feeling was
witnessed. In the day's speculation January
pork and Oclobcr short ribs wcro the two
most active lines. Future lard was quiet ,
though sales of cash reached the largo ag
gregate of ! lCOO tierces. The cash sold
brought (10.50 , and with the exception of 100
tierces , which wcro rcbought by n rcllner ,
was taken for immediate export. Cash short
ribs were also sold freely for shipment at 50
" ! % a nbovo the Oclobor market. The day's
prices all around , save on cash , October and
November lard , averaged and rested hlghci
than yesterday. Lard for the dilvcrief
stated closed unchanged. For October port
the advance established was f 1.21K , for No
vcmber , year und January pork "i c , fet
year nnd January lard fie , for October sheri
ribs SOc , nnd for January short ribs J c.

to Tun Ur.K.1 STOCKS A quiet opjning at
or near the last figures of yesterday was fol
lowed by some exhibition of weakness , and
the general list dcdino.l fractionally early In
the forenoon. After this thcro was un 1m-
'provcmont In values , but the market was dull
and the volume of business not large. There
was some waiting to learn the result of the
St. Paul meeting in London , but when the
result was made known it was without
'
visible effect. The English ( stockholders
voted to act with .1. S. Morgan it Co. for n
consolidation to protect their interests , and it
was said that stockholders representing IbO-
000 shares had deposited their holdings with
that firm. The Hock Island directors de
clared on yesterday their regular dividend of
l' per cent , nnd this morning that stock
opened IJf higher , though it subsequently
knt part of the advance. St. Paul opened ! 4
higher , nt 05 , sold ofC a little and then
advanced to C0 > , under good buying , after
which there was n fair reaction. Towards
noon the market became very dull and quiet ,
with u r.ither heavy tone , prices in most of th
list standing a little higher than at the open
ing. The afternoon was devoid of interest ,
and prieo changes , as a rule , were Incense
quential. At the close Union Pacific showed
a gain of I'f ' and Hocking Valley of 1 point.
The remainder of the list was gcnoially not
far from the opening prices.

The western ranges are still pouring their

for Hie lirsl two days of this week were still
heavier than on Iho same days last week.
To-day's market was slow and draggy , al
though quite a goo.l many cows and feeder. !
changed hands. Native cows sold all the
way from $1.50 to $2.23 and the quality was
good. Feeders ranged from $2.15 to 13.00
for natives and $2.55 to fci.70 for westerns.
Good butchers' stock nnd feeders sold at
prices Hint were about sicadv , with the de

moved very slowly. A bunch of over 200
head sold nt $ . ' .SU , or'JO TOj lower .han last
week. A shipper paid tl.30 for n load of
light corn-fed staers.
Moss.
The market was slow lo opan and when It
did open it was at a decline of 15c. The de
mand was light , there being no shippers on
the market , and the trade was slow even at
the decline. The bulk of Iho hogs were sold
but the market closed Hat with no ono try
ing to buy. The must of the hogs sold at
SJ.OO and under , and it required something
extra to bring over $1.00. Ono load and a
piece of n load of fancy heavy hogs reached
$0.30. The general quality of the hogs was
good. The season of the year has arrived
when n break in the market is to bo expected
at any time.
