THE Hen. ] The wheat bears and the wheat
bulls arc getting very obstinate and set In
their views. The market opened Ic off this
morning , but before the cloic of the session
thu price was back rigaln to yesterday's tlnal
range. Thu receipts ut winter wheat points
continue to fall off , which Is another bull
lKlnt , Still another bull point , and one that
the trade is not likely to overlook or forget ,
Is the fact that this market Is in a chron
ically heavy and oversold state. A very
large percentage of the cash wheat is owned
by two or three men , most of it by one man
Hutchlnson who Is rock-rooted in his
faith that It is worth over $1 a bushel and
will bring It. December wheat opened nt

traveled up and ! 2j e was reached. The
range for the last hour or such a matter was

and up to O.lj < c , averaging during the last

Trading in corn was light and the market
very weak. The opening of the October op
tion at43c showed a dcclino fromyesterday's
closa of ; Vc. Good buying advanced the
market to 4314'c , but on rccccipt of estimated
receipts for to-morrow of C32cars , a weakness
was manifested and It was sold freely until
It reached Kc b'd ' for October , where It
rallied on covering purchases. The senti
ment is in favor of lower prices , and the
close was weak nt 42c , about the lowest
figure of the day.
Hceeipts of oats were larger by a third
than was anticipated , and with a marked Im
provement in grading and only a moderate
demand. There was no cause for surprise
that the market averaged barely steady to
weak. A good many oats are in sight , and
with liberal receipts from this time forward
there was llttlo disposition to buy except at
low prices. May and near futures were in
Bomo request within a narrow range which
was substantially the same as yesterday ,
with November and year dull at 2J @ 2lifu
and 2lc respectively. No. 2 o.its logo to store
were steady at 24J < fc , while in store lots were
easier at 24c.
In provisions a.somewhat nervous market
was witnessed. Trading opened with a con
tinuation of yesterday's bullish feeling , but
after ti temporary upward turn in October
pork and short ribs , an easier state of affairs
assumed control. During the greater portion
tion of the session there was more inclina
tion to sell than to buy , though trading was
finite slow and without much interest. In
side prices , as a rule , were touched in the
last hour , and closinps all around were under
last night's llnal quotations. The dcclino

309 cars of the latter were in sight when this
report closed. Trade was unsettled and
prices uneven from the opening to the close ,
As has been the case all along , good stock
either natives , Texans or rangers , sold fairli
well , and in some cases equally as strong a ;
yesterday. Every shipper west of the Mis

stock , principally arbitrage houses , found
plenty of purchasers , and an advance Was

tivity. St , Paul led followed by Northwest
ern nnd LiUo Share , and prices rose steadily
until the end of the hour , substantial pains
having been made in both common and pre
ferred stock. Michigan Central , Lake Shore ,
Now Kngland , nnd liurllngton also shared

the general list trailing after. Koom traders
hammered the market , however , and there
were some realizing sales , price ? reacting ,
and In some Instances by noon being below
opening figures. Lake Shore and Michigan
Central showed considerable strength , the
former going to 101K , but declined with
the rest late in the day , closing nt $ KOJf.
Michigan Central closed with a gain of 13
points. The reaction during the latter part
of the session was aided by a rumor that the
Itock Island would reduce Its dividend , and
that stock dropped from S1.0SJ lo 1.05Ji ,
closing boiler at $1.03 < 4' . St. Paul did not do
very well after the early advance , slumping
off to C7j at the close , with preferred stock
showing a loss of fc. Omaha closeu 2
points lower on preferred , und 1 on common.
The remainder of the list was mostly lower
nt the finish than the ilrst figures of the day.

Omaha it would seem is bound to become a
peed sheep market. A year ago it was seldom
that any panic here , and still less frequent
that any were sold.
Of the throe preat pork packing centers ,
Chicago , Kansas City and Omaha , the lalter
is the only ono which has packed more hops
Bince March 1 than the corresponding period
in 1SS7. The business of the other two cities
