There hns boon decided apathy of the delegates-elect on the part of the people , or proxies have sold nt a good round prico. There has been a deal somewhere Unit tends to distance chances. At what point Tun HKB representative does not cnro to cast the stone ; still , Council may bo the man , and for that mutter Mr. Brown , either of whom would ably represent the First district in congress. That Council is the strongest man in the race no one questions for a sin trio moment , and ho has a number of friends who insist that ho will be the nominee on the llrst or second ballot. Others Btnlo that his defeat is a foregone con clusion. Kcavis , of Richardson , is hope ful and ho is now on the grounds. Colby and Majors rldo the same balance. The intense excitement of two years ago will not bo repented this yenr. Tlio best interests of the party are weighing in the balance , and it is safe to say that Iho republicans of the district nro ready for any good man who can command the full party strength. Tin : Mihboum I'Acincox iicic. ) A ponderous volume lies on Clerk Biuungnrtnor'f ) table in the ofllco of the secretary of stnto. It is a great book , containing nearly six hundred pa < jcs , nnd shows external evidences of having just como from a print shop nnd book bindnrj. The back of this book is damp nnd the ink is not dry that entitles "Powers of Attorney of the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company , " and nccom- punying it are the amended articles of incorporation , alleged to have been nled on the -Ith day of this month. It is true thnt the filing stamp of the secretary of stnto is impressed upon the documents in ques tion , but it is al&o true that they disap peared on the snino day and have not since been been about the secretary's ollico until this morning. This is not regular procedure and a bad precedent has been made. But Daily P. Morgan told the truth , and the prevarication about the matter stops nt the table where the documents lie. It is now possible for any one interested to see the amended articles of incorporation that nro supposed to change this com pany from a foreign to n domestic cor- porntion. When filed , nnd until re corded , the property is supposed to be long to the secretary of state , but on investigation TUB BKK representative learned that the company paid for the binding. The great volume shows that there nro 577 powers of nttornoy , nnd recites the conditions of the charter and organization of the company. It is big enough nnd ought to do the work. It will take ono of the clerks of the ollico three months to make it n part of the records. rillKKI ) HUBL HOT/DS TUB VOIIT. Itnilroad olllcmls wore in the city this morningand secured another injunction to drive Friend Cuol from his temporary abode on the grade of the Missouri Pa cific railroad company near Hickman. As slated by THIS LJKH this morning ho has hold the fort since last Saturday de spite threats , injunctions nnd arrest , nnd hns hold a force of more than fifty men at bay. In the event of his absence his plucky wife has hold the situation ami refused to yield an inch. They are a plucky pair and propose to light for their property until the company pays thorn literally what it destroys. But Mr. Buol says ho will abide any decision of the law whether just or unjust , but until that time ho will decline anything butju justan'dequitablo compromise. Ho has a line farm of 010 acres nnd it lias boon cut up thrice by railroads and ho does not propose that it shall be mangled ngain without a kick unless ho receiver a just recompense. His family still oc cupy the tout with him , and Friend lautrhlngly says thnt ho believes the railroaders are more afraid of the stars and stripes than they are of him. "The company is not a citizen of Nebraska and I am. I would not have said a word or done a thing had the laws of the state boon complied with by the company. The company tried to boat mo and I am protecting my property. " imnTHKU AOAINST lUlOTHlSU. Secretary Seoly , of the republican st.ito central committee , bus just re ceived a letter from Hon. C. Albany Argus : A gentleman told mo yesterday of a strange experience ro- 'nted by a friend of his. It was during the battle of Gettysburg that his friend , just before entering the action , took his canteen from his shoulder nnd hid it in [ i crevice in the rock. Then came the lery hail of shot and shell that swept ilown regiments like fields of wheat bc- "ore a reaper. At the close of the battle the soldier forgot all about his canteen , : ior did it ever occur to him again until lie visited the Hold at the late reunion. Then it flashed through his mind , and after a few minutes' search ho found it where ho had loft it on that momentous day. It Boomed scarcely credible that it could have boon overlooked during the minute exploration of the Hold ever since the war , but the gentleman who related the incident is of unimpeach able voracity. The real estate agent blushed and stammered , nnd would have made an excuse had ho not hoard a largo sized titter go round the room. So prone are all to ntld to the lights and ahadow.s of the verbal picture * they paint of dlRropulablo sections that I seems hardly creditable that a spot can bo found worse than people say or think that It la. Such , howov r , is the cnso in ono instance at lemt. Amid the dark recesses of the plant mountains of California n don of Infamy uin ; bo found so wicked , dangerous anil corrupt that It cannot bo libeled. The woatorn Hank of the Sierra No- vad ns Immcdintoly north of the Central Pacific railroad Is cut and burrowed by deep canyons and marked by high , stoop ridge * . Above an altitude of " ,000 feet thc o ridges are heavily tim bered with oak and yellow plno nnd covered with iv thick growth of under brush. As wo ascend , spruce , llr and ugtvr plno replace ether varieties of roe growth , but the low , dense tinder- rush continues to the summits of the noun tains. Th6 main lines nt trnvol from the Sacramento valley to the mining towns ' .n the mountains of necessity follow , heso high narrow ridges. The traveler in many places can see but two or three rods ahead nnd the ilcnso timber and thick underbrush af- 'ord ' uncnualoil opportunities to robbers ind highwaymen. No sooner has a robbery booncommitted than the foot- Kid stops oil' to one side and is instantly est sight of in the surrounding forests. To follow him through the tangled inaroi of the dense mananltn nnd wild aurcl would bo n. physical impossibility .o ono unacquainted "with the immedi- ite locality , and it would be a matter of MSO for ono man to escape from a hun dred pursuers. One of these hiarh , narrow , densely tvoodcd "backbones'as they are appro- u'latoly named , with deep , rugged can ons upon either bide , is the locality in lucstlon. The name itself hns some- , hlng disagreeable in its sound. It was . iven many years ngo , when the colored race in America was held in bondage uid the term "nigger" was one of shame vnd reproach. It signified that a low ilass had settled there and the hiir- mmdlngs and conditions of the locality ivoro to be looked upon with suspicion nd distrust. The name "tent , " too , had some un pleasant suggestions. It brought to nind the Indian , the Arab and the Tar- , ar all freebooters and robbers. There tvas nothing indicative of homo orcom- 'ort in its sound , nor would a more inti- nato acquaintance with "Nigger Tent" and its inmates reassure either the near osidont or the passing traveler. The dweller from the open or valley part of California approaches the local ity in ouc'jtioii much as the Englishman or the Lowliindor used to draw near the lilTs , dolls and gorges of the lligli- ands. They reali/c that danger ever .urks amid the dark recesses of the mountains , danger that they are powerless - loss to avert and know not upon what side or tit what moment to expect nn at- tauk. Many tales of highway robbery nnd oven murder , committed in the vi cinity are common among the older res idents nnd others who have had occa sion to visit this region. And when wo idd to this the fact that every man liv ing witin a few miles of this noted crim inal resort instinctively lowers his voice and glances carefully about him when answering any questions or tell ing any tales of''Nigger Tent" or its inmates , the inquirer is impressed with the dangerous elements with whiph ho is so nearly brought into contact. lie , too , soon catches the feeling that danger , nnd perhaps death , ever hovers near , and is careful with whom ho con verses or what ho says concerning this hotbed of crime. That long , low , dark building , with its old stables and outbuildings , situ ated in a. little depression of the high , narrow ridge , and half hidden amid the black forests that surround it , hns crimes enough of its own to answer for , but those inclined to bo communicative recall others committed not far away and for which it should not bo held to answer , yet they somehow throw their ugly shadows over this unhallowed spot. The fair fame of Downievillo , not many miles from this place , has long been eloudcd by the murderous hanging of a young and beautiful Spanish woman by a drunken mob on the national an niversary. Many witnesses can bo found who vividly depict the wonderful solf- nossession of this bright-eyed , ravcn- liaired young woman during the trying hour just before her death. They toll , too , how she came down through the throngs of men with a smile upon her face , giving her hand to ono of her countrymen and bidding him good-bye 111 Spanish , how she lifted her long , luxuriant tresses and placed the rope around her own neck , submitted with grace while her hands were tied behind her and a handkerchief thrown over her face , and uttered not a groan or cry as the word was given which sent her to a painful death. The Slate crook tragedy is often spoken of , where a mob of minors , act ing under the lynch law , marched throe prisoners up to the bank of a wooded creek ana on reaching the first tree throw a rope over a limb and hauled up ono Miller to die by strangulation ; how they kept on till a second tree was reached , when the scene was repeated and n man named Paries mot his death in a similar manner , and when a third tree was reached the man Filluioro was strung up und n hundred pistols Hashed in the air and the owners swore they would shoot the first man that attempt ed to cut him down. Though years have passed the Good year Bar tragedy is often recalled , where a Spaniard stabbed and killed one Hawkins and then the infuriated minors fell upon the murderer with their long , sharp knives and literally cut him to pieces. The butchery of five Chinamen on Slate creek is another dark page in the history of this region , nil the more go that it remains a mystery to this day who committed the dastardly deed. The branding on the cheek of the let ter ltT" with a rcdhot iron , to mark the noted thief Harlow , his subsequent murder of one Smith to gain the lattor's wife , and hln own hanging nt n later date , is nnothor tale well kept in mint l by many old residents. The cold blooded murder of Robert Mollatt by David Butler , for a very trilling oJlonso , is remembered all the better for his famous defense by the celebrated Col onel E. D. Baker and Aaron A. Sargont. The shooting of "Baltimore Jack'1 by the gambler Muntz , and the killing of Purely in an attack upon the olllcors while trying to lynch Muntz , is another tale often repeated , and these many crimes and the bloodshed in thorn scorns to hang over."Niggor Tent" more than any ether spot in all that section , for It has ever boon the rendezvous of the thieftho highwayman and the murderer from n very early day. Under the guise of an ordinary public liouso where food and lodgings nro furnished , this spot has boon for more than a quar ter of n century a noted resort for the criminal element of the whole sur- rorfnding country. Hero is where many wore first conceived , aud here it B thnt the perpetrators sallied forth on tliplr orrntiils of robbury nnd bloodshed , ind thither they rpUirued to spend their ' 11-goUcn gains in riotous dissipation. In an early day this wns a lavorito stopplng-plneo of Jonquin Muriottn nnd ila bloodthirsty uldf Three-Fingered Jack. The history of their crimes nlono would fill nn ordinary volume. Amid nuch that is black nnd revolting is n ess tragic scone recalled in which Joaquin was ono of the actors. lie had a sister who made her homo in Marys- vlllo for several years. On ono occasion , wo or three of his victims sought re venge by driving the woman from her loino and out of the towm A stout and ithlet'c ' young teamster interfered in her bvhnlf ; and his act was never forgotten - gotten by the bandit. Some months later this same tcam- stor had occasion to drawi0 ! ! from the express ollleo in Mnryvillo to blnrfc oil on a trip to the mountains. On his second day out , ns ho was approaching the foothills of the Sierras , ho noted some half-do/.cn men , nil on horseback , a short distance from the road. A mo- nent later ono of them loft the others ind rode up to him , "I want to borrow what money you have , " said the rider. " 1 haven't any , " was the answer from io teamster , who was anxious not to lose his hard-earned coin. "Yes , " was the reply. "You have $ T 00 or ever that you drew from the ex- n-o&s ollico. 1 need jitbt $300 , but I only iVtuit to borrow it. Tlio tonmster saw it , vas no use to deny having it , so with Lho best grace ho could summon ho ilrow forth the purse and handed it over .0 the road agent. The latter thanked iitm and said : "I run only borrowing this for a few days. When yoii come lown on your trip btop at the Barton house and got your money back , for I will leave it there for you. " The man little thought that ho would ever see the gold again , but even while : 'egarding it as lost ho could not but ad- iniro the slim , graceful figure nnd imuchless horsemanship of the noted jtuidit chief , for it wns none other than Jonquin himself who had "borrowed" : iis money. Several days later , on his return trip rom the hills , the teamster stopped at .ho house named and asked the bar- feopor if any one had left some money 'or him. "How much did you expect ? ' ' asked the man , with a bmilo. "Well , " was the reply , "if ho loft any ao wns to leave about $300. " "Hero it is"said the hotel man , handIng - Ing out a purse containing the full amount. "Do you know who loft it ? " suddenly inquired the teamster. The other smiled again and said , "Oh , that is all right. Ho won't never molest you , " and with this ho was obliged to bo content. Of Throe-Fingered Jack it is recalled Lhut not tunny miles from Nigger Tent lie overtook two teamsters on the road. No ono ever knew whether it wtus from wanton cruelty or because resistance to robbery was oifered , but ho and some of his band throw their lariats around the nocks of the poor men and dragged them to death along the road. Many of the residents knew .Toaquin and several members of his gang by sight , but they gave them shelter anil did not bond word to the ollicers from very fear of their lives. In this vicinity lived for a time the noted CJnsowny family , of which live members were afterwards sent to state prison for robbery. Hero , too , operated for a long period a well-romembcrod robber named Hess , who committed many depredations. It was the homo of this class when off the road , and from here they wont forth to attack stages , expressmen and trav elers on all the roads of several coun ties , and when they returned loaded with their plunder hero it was they spent their time in drinking and cu- rousing , with courtesans for their com panions. One of the crimes committed near Nigger Tent was the murder of u Span iard by some unknown assassin. The man was coming from Sierra City with several companions , driving a number of horses down to the Sacramento val ley. This man had lagged behind the otliorb for some reason and Umt was the last soon of him alivo. His friends be came alarmed at his prolonged absence and returned to llnd his lifeless body lying in the road , and his money , amounting to nearly JCOO , carried olf. They dug a lonely grave by the road- bide and buried him there for the time being , but afterwards removed the body to what was known as charcoal Flat , where ho hud formerly lived. Another murder that is still remem bered was the killing of a man named Gilford. Like the Spaniard , ho was fvhot down , evidently without a word of warning , and his pockets rilled of what money could bo found. IIo was the owner of the store and the toll- bridge at Dullard's Bar , and was a well-known man among the early settlers. Among the various stage robberies that have occurred is one of more than usual interest. Over thirty yearn ago one Tom Boll was the driver of the Mnrysvillo and Campionvillo stage. One day about the 1st of August ho was climbing the grade with eighteen pas sengers on board , when in the vicinity of this ill-famed locality , two robbers sprang out from the bushes and caught the horses by their bits , a third hold a leveled gun on the mes senger , while a fourth ordered the passengers to tumble out and turnover their money and valuables to his keep ing. It so happened that nearly every man on board was armed , and instead of doing as ordered , they began a fqsilhulo upon the stairo agents. The shots were promptly returned , and no ono could afterwards account for the number of shots fired at such close range and belittle little damage dono. A negro woman on board was shot through the scalp , but this was thq only injury to the passen gers , who speedily sprang out of the conch and followed up the retreating robbers. The latter broke and ran , closely pur- .sued by the excites ! travelers , and addi tional shots were exchanged. Ono or two men returned to the Oregon house where a largo posse was collected , and the adjacent canyons were raided and ono man found in a dying condition from the otlocts of n shot by the passon- erers. There was a general uprising of the minors and the whole lot of thieves and | robbers was for a tmo driven out of the country. The origin of Iho name "Nigger Tent" rose from a party of negroes who Bottled in a very early'day at this point nnd started a sort of wayside eating nouBO. They afterwards sold out to two young men , RTIO in 'turn disposed of the place to others' . In time it came Into tlio possession of John Romargi and wife , who had boon keeping a pub lic resort some miles aw ay. While up to this time the locality had not borne any too good a name , yet from this period onward its ill-fame in creased till at the present day it is noted as the worst-criminal rendezvous on the Pacific const. Minors who were dlejwsed to drink and gamble , Mexi cans and half-breed Indians , women of ill-roputo , together with robbers and murderers , inudi ) "Nigger Tent" their headquarters. Hero was planned many of the crimes that have been committed for miles around. Here 'io Burlington Burlington . . The Burlington takes the lead. It was in advance of all lines in developing Nebracka. SPANKING A PIUNOE. The Prince of "Wales Across His Mothcr'n Knee. From an Aberdeen ( Scotlnnd ) paper , 1S44 : Her majesty , accompanied by the prince consort and the royal children , visited Scotland for the first time and tarried a long time on her way at Bal moral. On the trip the yacht , in which the parly traveled by water , called at Aberdeen , and , of couroe , the loyal in habitants of that city turned out in largo numbers to do honor to their bc- locd sovereign. A guard of honor , consisting of the merchants ot the place , was formed , and , in all the glory of black broadcloth and white kids , pa raded on the edge of the dock to which the vessel moored , at just sulllcicnt dis tance to prevent people from stepping on board. Scats were erected on the bank , tier above tier , liico those of a circus , to accommodate the thousands that assembled to ga/.o on the spectacle of an anointed queen. Her majesty good-naturedly remained on deck to gratify as much as possible the curiosity of the bonny Scots , and promenaded about in full view of the immense crowd. The prince of Wales , a child of about 5 or 0 years , was with her. Among ether things placed on the deck for the accommodation of the queen was a costly nnd very splendid sofa , ornamented with tassels ; and the Srince , like other ] boys of that age , eing of a destructive turn , began to pull at ono in a manner that threatened to detach it. His mother observed the net , and ordered him to desist. Ho did so. but as soon as her back was turned sei/.cd the tassel again to give another jerk. The queen appeared to have ex pected something of the kind , for she was at that moment watching him from the corner of her eye. In an instant she turned , and seizing the luckless heir apparent of England by the "scrull of the nock , " elevated one of her feet upon the sofa , hoisted the youngster ovof- her knee , ndjustcd him in the po sition mutually familiar to parents and children generally , when such ceremo nies are to bo performed , nnd gave him a sound spanking. It may bo proper to mention , on passant , for the Informa tion of youths who sometimes find them selves similarly circumstanced , thnt the illustrious sufferer kicked nnd bellowed under the nlllictivo dispensation quite as lustily as boys of lower birth nro wont to do. The nmnzemont with which the spcctntors witnessed the example of royal domestic discipline may bo im- nglncd , butscnrcoly described in fitting terms. A dead silence prevniled for a moment , but wns suddenly broken by a tremendous roar of laughter , whi'ch could not bo suppressed by any thought of decorum , respect for the queen , or sympathy for the victim of her dis pleasure. The explosion recalled the royal mother to a sense of her position , and , having turned toward the crowd for a moment , her face sulTusod with crimson , she hastily descended into the cabin , and was seen no more by the expectant populace. "Fifty Years Ago : " The gentlemen , of whoso long and wavy hair I have al ready spoken , were , for evening dress , a high black stock , the many folds of Which covered the shirt , and were en riched by a nyisstvo pin , the white shirt cuffs were neatly turned ever their wrists , tlioir dross coats were buttoned , their trousers were tightand they were straps and pumps. The ladies either were curls- neatly arranged on each bide you may still see borne old Indies wno have clung to the pretty fashion of their youth or they were their hair dropped in a IOOD down the cheek and behind the car and then fastened in some kind of band with ribbons at the back of the head. Thp machinery of the frocks ! reminds one of tiieveddiue morning in "Pickwick , " when all the girls were crying out to bo "dono up , " for they had hooks and eyes , and the girls were helpless by themselves. Pink was the favorite color and a very pretty color , too ; and there was plenty of scope for the milliner's art in real and artificial ( lowers. The older ladies were magnificent in turbans , and the younger ones were across the forehead a band of velvet or silk decorated with a gold buckle , or something in pearls nnd diamonds. Its superior excellence proven In millions o homes for more tlmn n quarter of n century. I Is used by the United states Gove rnment.
