CIIICAOO , August 28. ( Special Telegram
to THE BBK.I The wheat market went wild
to-day. It fairly hummed and the hands on
the Indicator got tlrod out and quit trying to
record the lightning changes on quotations.
Measured by the extreme range September
Wheat scored an advance of 8J o from yes
terday , nnd December 2 o. The two months
got together and traveled In double harness
most ot the day. When September touched
04.0 the first time , December was Q4j c , and
then they were quoted at 04o simultaneously.
Thereafter they were never moro than } { o
npart , September opened at OlXo and De
cember nt 92Jfc. The range on the day was
91,8 30 # c for September , and 02X(304M'o ( for
December. The full Improvement estab
lished was not sustained , however , nnd clos
ing quotations were nt a considerable de
preciation from the top. The big gain on
the day was made and held throughout.
Confirmation of the reports from Vienna
mentioned yesterday gave the market Its im
petus on the curb. A vast flood of sensational
crop damage news from the northwest added
fuel to the flames. Now thoroughly fright-
rned , the shorts helped thobonm along and
mi army of little bulls contributed to swell
the excitement. Foreigners nnd the north
west bought a lot of wheat and the market
is trcttlng to bo an immensely broad one.
The bulk of buying is by foreign houses and
) ilg brokerage houses that do business
for professional speculators In great part
That portion of the wheat pit next to the
Hiimplo crowd nnd corn pit has not yet filled
up. When the "country" gets interested
orders will roll over that edge of the pit in a
perfect tidal wave. "Just wait till the coun
try takes hold , " is the frequent assertion of
the old timer as his eyes glisten with recol
lections of past bull campaigns , September
inn down from 01'to to 92 0 as though it
was greased nnd December from O414'o to
O'iWc. The market shook itself together and
rallied somewhat from the depression but
closings dffnot show nn important recovery.
From start to finish the wheat pit was a
Hccno of great excitement. The interest of
the whole was on wheat and the pace was too
fast for outside markets , though they made
heroic efforts to keep In ,
The corn market was moro uctivo to-day
nnd decidedly stronger , and though thu full
udvuncu wa not sustained , September closed
about ; ' ( < ! higher than it closed last night ,
October ; \fo higher , and May about ' c high
er. The strength was chiefly duo to an excited -
cited advance in the wheat market. The
Miortn was nervous nnd li'd to a good deal ol
covering. The excitement in wheat drew
iittontlon very largely to that market anil
thu corn pit was nt times very dull. Sep
tember and October were about the same
price and sold from 4yt \ to 45.'Nc ' , eased oft
and closed ut about 4 1" ' . May was Jinn
uml sold from 40 to 40' < , c , not , much at thu
outside , closing at 40\c.
Oats wcro llrmor though quiet , with sales
indicating a V@'xC ' advance early , nlthouuh
thu strength was not altogether main
tained. Kcports ftoin Hio interior indicate
that threshing is actively prosecuted , hence
while the advance In wheat was rcllectcd
Mlghtly on oats , tradcis showed u disposition
to hold off in anticipation of continued liberal
nec'lpts. August hold up to 25lfo , but de
clined later with the two following months
in same request , while deferred deliveries
were dull at fractional improvement. Cash
oats were in fair request with 24 ( @ 27JsO
paid for No. 2 in stoic , or ' .jfil-Vo advance
and i.8 } < ) for No. 2 white In store.
In provisions the movement of prices was
again upward. The range all around was
higher than yesterday , and for both pork and
l.ird closings showed an advance for the day
of lOc. Short ribs clotted quotably un
changed.

The supply of hoof cattle was not laruo but
there wcro some better cattle hero , as high as
$5.00 being paid for ono bunch of medium

desirable cattle wore about all sold , In addi

nnd the pens were cleared early. Heavy
hoqs sold well at the oiciilng | , as Jilgh as $0.80

men found It hard work to dispose of their

The receipts were heavy , there being eight

Tlio Wool Alnrket.
Stocks of wool are comparatively light ,
both at Chicago nnd In the country , nnd the
demand has shown n steady improvement
for nearly thrco weeks past. Medium and
line wools are firmly held at the recent ad
vances but wools cannot bo marketed in
Chicago at the higher prices made for them
in the country lust week. The manufactur
ers are resisting the late activity and appre
ciation , and with n largo number of mills
closed nnd others on small orders , n tem
porary roattiou in the market is not un
likely.
The receipts since January 1 have been
10 , ' . J,871 Ibs against 19,873,487 Ibs at thu cor
responding date of 1SS7. The shipments for
corresponding ( tales wcro : 1S38 , 29,500,089
Ibs ; 18b7 , 20,700,338 Ibs.
Hradslreet's reviews the situation elso-
whuro as follows : There has been some
what less activity In the wool markets this
week than lnt > t , but a general Inquiry for
supplies on the part of manufacturers is
observed and prices are linn ut the advances
lately established. Little speculation is
now apparent. The prevailing opinion in the
trade seems to bo that the demand for con
sumption will continue steady enough and
largo enough to maintain present values.
Just now there Is nothing to point to a fur-
timr advance. The gain has been most note
worthy in line fleeces , though coitaiu des
criptions of line medium wools have ad
vanced about ns much. The woolen goods
situation is better than u month ago , and
this fact gives strength to the market for
raw materials.
'At Boston prices are strong , with steady
demand for consumption. Tno principal
manufacturers have laid hi considerable
stocks. Fine Ohio decors are selling fairly
well ut about 30o per pound. Thcro is no
llttlo activity in fine medium and line terri
tory supplies , tmd Texas wool likewise sells
freely. There Is no special feature in foreign
wool of any description. Uccelpts nil told
since the beginning of the year have been
much loss than during the same porlod last
year. Current quotations ore as follows :

iwrted at 0,000,000 iKHWds , as ngam t 0,103 , .

At Philadelphia vi'Ool has been In fair do-
iniind , but stocks hftv been so much reduced
by rccelit sales tliat' ' h maintenance of hist
week's activity has been out of the question.
The now wools that "nro being opened nnd
graded are generally held higher on account
of the advanced cost. In the west , nnd the
rising tendency of vulUos operates to chock
trade. The sales for the week foot up n total
of 551,000 pounds ) against 1,50.1,000 pounds
lust week and ( VS7,000 pounds for the corresponding
spending week last year.

Hankers report the demand for currency
from the country steadily Increasing , but the
supply is equal to It and no stringency Is ap
parent. Kates nro fttendy at 8 ( 10 per cent.
Exchange $1.00 per thousand premium. The
crop dumago In Dakota is said to bo quite
serious and ns harvest progresses wheat
shows up poorly. Nebraska crops uro doing
iliicly nnd our farmers will need to borrow
but little this year. It Is intimated that the
railroads show a dlsixisltion to advance rates ,
as ll is their custom to put on ' 'all ' the traflle
will boar- " General trade holds on fairly
well , but collections are reported not so
good. Lumber , which has been quiet for the
past sixty days , Is looking up ami dealers ex
pect a very largo trade in September and
October. Dealers In water mid .steam litters' |
supplies nro pushed to till orders , mid the
plumbing trade Is moro active than at iiuy
