Blurted raggedly with sales ranplng from
OOc to OO c. Ho had another set buyIng -

t9c at the opening to S'J u and a little while
nftcrwardtt to OO.Jfc. December ranged at

worked b.ick about J < c , September touching
8c ! ) and December 00u. The difference
between the two months , it will bo observed ,
naTowcd to Ic , anil at times It was J c less
than that even. The trade was active
around the opening , but quieted down later ,
and for an hour previous to the announce
ment ot the visible supply statement
business dragged somewhat. Simultan
eously with the receipt of news that
the Increase was 1)07,000 ) bushels it was given
out that the international grain congress at
Vienna had published its estimates to tue ef
fect that the world's crop of wheat would
fall 203,000,000 , bushels below last year and
150,000,000 , bushels below the average of the
last flvo .years. This Important pleco of
news was not supposed to bo authentic ; until
the statement received positive verification
during .the afternoon. Tlio International
congress met to-day and skeptics pointed to
the fact that It would not bo likely to more
than complete its organization the first day ,
leaving for later sessions the work of re
ceiving and digesting crop reports from the
several producing countries. Never
theless the price of wheat was
marked up J c on the statement
that tHe market , has good support. However ,
local sentiment was also unanimously bear
ish "for a reaction" early In the day. but it
changed Inter on more bullish advices from
the continent. Keports from the winter
wheat sections Indicate that the crop is turnIng -
Ing out rather better than was expected , but
advices from the northwest are unfavorable ,
with now and then an exception. An exami
nation o ! nearly ono hundred samples re
ceived at Fargo , Dak. , convinced an expert
that the crop of that section would be 40 bur
cent below an average , and the prediction
was again freely made by the grain men ol
that locality thnt not 10 per cent of the
wheat raised north of the Northern Pacific
would grade No. 1' hard. The visi
ble supply statement occasioned neither
surprise nor excitement. The increase
was about what had been expected ,
The pit was quiet the last hour and values
were steadily held around OOo for Septembei
and ( lie for December. Prices were kepi
without Important variation. The undertont

did not show any new features this morning
at the o | > cnlng , which was generally frac
tionally higher than Saturday's close. There
was a moderate amount of trading at the
start , though the animation was confined to
less than a dozen of the leading stocks ,
among which Lackawanna , St. Paul , Read
ing , Western Uclon , Oregon Transconti
nental and Union Pacific wcro the most con
spicuous for strength , through sympathy
with a good London market , though from
that place orders wcro scarce , a.nd buying by
leading commission houses were the strength
ening factors. There was a good strong
market about all day , though the advance
was not great. St. Paul , Heading and Lnck-
awanna closed about 1 point higher and
Western Union at X advance.

dull and rather heavy.

TRADE CONDITIONS.
Bankers have nothing special to report-in
their line. There is u fairdemaud for money
from both city and country , which is readily
met at the usual rates , 8 to 10 per cent.
General tnide is very fair for the season.
The usually lull precedent to and during
harvest is felt , but the outlook for a cheery
fall trade is very good. Crop weather con

likewise favorable as iudicativo of a heavy
shortage there to bo filled from here. Col
lections are good for the season , having
fallen off gradually since the 1st of the
month as harvest approaches. Country
bankers are calling for money , however , and
the return How from the proceeds of cror
sales will bo sufficient to more than pay the
debt of the country to the city.

Iriuli AVoinon ,
The women of these coasts mid Isluntls
ire IIH BkilHul an the innn in lianilling
ho our and ruddor. They know every
i iiiken rock mid dangerous current of
.he intricate channclB butwcon the great
slum ! of Anui and the mainland , and
take the boats in and out all weathers.
? or many years a Grace Darling of this
western ooabt , the daughter of a pilot
tvho lived on Fights island , went out in
a storm and darkness with her old
ather , never trusting him alone , as she
know his weakness for whisky. This
bravo girl never flinched from facing
the wildest gales , fearing that disaster
[ night befall her father , and the vessels
it was Ins business to guide to a safe an
chorage , if she were not at the holm.
Many a ship's crew beating about be
tween Arun and Owey oA'ed its preser
vation to Nellie Boyle. Two sisters
have taken the post boat into
Aran for many years past , their father ,
John Nancy , being now old and
infirm. The beetling cliffs and echoing
aves of this dangerous coast have n
weird charm of their own , and the sim
ple people born within the bound of the
tlantic surges cling wiih a surprising
tenacity to their thatched and roped
cottages , sheltered behind huge round-
backed rocks , in the hollows of which
they grow their patches of potatoes and
stunted oats and hurley. The number
of these dwellings , starting up out of
what from afar looks like a stony desert
both by the sea and for miles inland , IB
startling to us who rollect on the possi
bilities of subsistence afforded by this
so-called land. The unfailing bog af
fords ample fuel , it is true , and the potato
tate crop , when as good as now , will last
throughout tlio winter. In a good sea
son such as this the oats have a chance
of getting stacked before the equinoc
tial gules begin to blow. Well it would
be if these oats , ground into meal ,
might form a larger part of the staple
food of Donegal. Strong tea , boiled in
the "wee pot , " beside the turf embers ,
with bakers' bread , has now taken
the ulace of the wholesome bone-mak
ing porridge on which the canny Scot
still lives. To buy groceries money it
needed , and wo wonder how this can be
earned here. Kelp or sea-weed burning
used to bring them money ; and thit
year , too , thin oillurs of blue smoke are
rising all round by the sea , showing , lot
us hope , that trade in iodine is brisk.
The llshing ought to bo a fruitful source
of prosperity to the Rosses , but on thie
subject a resident writes in 1884 as fol
lows : "To the north of Aranmoro ,
b < retching away to the northwest ol
Tory , them is one fishing bank , where
all ( finds of fish might bo caught overj
day in the year with suitable boats and
gear. In very flno weather our smal
crafts often go out from four to six miloi
off Aran Heads. Next day they all come
back laden , and after such a take all the
other boats in the neighborhood will ge
out. It may bo that a breeze springs
up and the sea rises in the middle of
good catch , then all have to run foi
homo or shelter. Largo , woll-flUet
fishing smacks could stay out there foi
days , and make plenty of money , too
but facilities for the transit aud sale o
fish there are none.
Do FIjjrurcB Iilo ?
Do figures lie ? Lot us sco.
Two women had thirty chickens each
which they took to market. The ;
'
agreed to divide equally the proceeds o'
their sale.
One sold her chickens two for 81 , get
ting for her thirty chinkons SIS.
The other sold hors thrco for $1 , getting
ting for her chickens $10.
This raado.$25 realized on the sixt ;
chickens.
The merchant called to divide tin
money said :
"You sold your thirty chickens twi
for $ land you sold your thirty chicken
throe- for $1. That makes sixty chicken
at the rate of five for $2. Well , five int
sixty goes twelve times twice twelve i
