. August &i. 1 Special TeleRram
to Tnr. Hr.n.l The wheat market was wild
nround the opening. Trades were made } c
npart nt the start and It was some minutes before
fore anything llko uniformity en"1. ? uo estab
lished. ThC75Wnn trading ntOOftWJj o for Sep
tcinbcrand WgKji ( ! o forDeccmbcr. Anywhere
within those limits was the market. It was
as much iii a man's life was worth to bo in
the pit at the start. The crowd was In a per
fect uproar and there was u grand rush of
country buying orders. The country Is at
length beginning to think well of wheat ,
though it has been a long time making up Its
mind that the present advance was anything
more substantial than a "noda water bulge. "
The opening range was lHi@IJfc higher
than yesterday's closing quotations. For
a little whllo there was no wheat to bo had ,
but as soon as the local bulls could catch
their breath , many of them began to soil out
long wheat and take the prollts. This policy
BOOH became general and under pressure of
long wheat values reacted , September going
to S'J o and December to W/tc , The demand
was enormous , however , and offerings were
licked up greedily. The market again started
up and advanced about Jfc. Again ttiero
came a lull and for an hour the quietest per
iod for three days was experienced. In that
time the market worked back to 8c ! ) for Sep
tember und OO QOlc for lccembcror nearly
to yesterday's closing rango. Later there was
n resumption of activity , nnd many
of the big commission houses , which wcro
heavy sellers early , again turned buyers.
Telegraphic business poured in upon the
commission merchants again , and the mar
kets took on the color of buoyancy once more.
Prices advanced @J c like lightning within
a' e range. The market was absolutely un
controllable. It surged backward and for
ward with mighty swings and lunges thnt no
combination could explain , clicck or help
uloug. Shortly after 18 o'clock the mar
ket got its second wind and steamed
up &c without n skip , passing the pre
vious high water mark with the celerity
of "greased lightning. " September mounted
to ! llc. There was "no wheat for sale , " to
xiso an exaggerated form of expression some
times employed around the pit. The realiz
ing lir.il all been done earlier in the day and
the market had absorbed all the property
that came out. Now buying set the market
wild and the morning performance was re-
enacted. Everybody was clamorous to buy
for fear the market was going to get away
and out of reach. The last half hour of the
session was the , most exciting period of the
day. Advance was piled up to advance"
and closing prices were nt the extreme
top , or 2 0 above yesterday. War news
was mentioned as u cause of the
late excitement , but It was strong- cables and
nn accumulation of reports from the north ,
west of deplorable crop prospects. Pillsbur.v
cabled Hacker that thu "wheat , rye and potato
tate crop of Europe Is the shortest in many
years. "
The corn market was active to-day and de
cidedly strong most of the session , but had
some spells of weakness , though closing
with September about I' e higher than it
elosed last night , and October about l ! c
higher , though May was unchanged. The
first sale was at an advance of Jfc from last
night's close , the strength being duo to
higher cables und the excitement which pre
vailed in wheat nt the opening ,
nnd September sold from 45 to - ( % .
Several largo operators were free
buyers , nnd the sports quickly became
alarmed and covered pretty freely , this de
mand helping materially to firm prices. But
the advance checked buying nnd under
pretty free realizing sales there was n grad
ual drop of about % c. The market then re-
ncU-d sharply In sympathy with tlio sharp
upturn in wheat , changed some , and closed
fairly Orui. Long futures opened up higher ,
but they wcro not sustained as well as nearer
futures. Warmer weather in the Interior
end good prospects for the growing crop was
the probable cause of this.
Oats did notpartakn of the activity , noted
elsewhere , and under the light attendance of
operators , ruled dull , though firm with the
exception of cash ana seller the
month , which weakened after nn
early show of strength. A few
buyers appeared for August , while there
wore fair selling orders under increasing re
ceipts , nnd after selling at 25c early , this
month ruled easy and dull , with more atten
tion shown longer futures and @ ; ' < fc ad
vance noted , with May at one time selling up
JgO to 28X@ 'e. ' The In store market was
dull and easy in sympathy with August , sellIng -
Ing at "o e and trading ehlclly in sample.
OTho interest in the provision pit was ; on-
fined chlelly to lard. In that article there was
n continuation of the uneasiness shown yes
terday in short circles , and under a good
demand the few sellers present had no
trouble to advance prices. First sales of
lard for September wcro made at the appre
ciation of lij ! o and subsequently the open
ing quotation was marked up lOc. The Oc
tober future opened the same as September ,
but sold during tlio session nt an average
discount of UJ < ; @ .H ! in these futures. The
day's ' aetual advaneo was 82 > tf ( % . ' " } < ? . Pork
and short ribs wcro natunilly affected by the
boom in lard , and for the former prices
closed ' % a and for short ribs 2 - < @ 5e higher.

ing for a heavy trade next month.
Evidence taken before n congressional
committee shows that Chicago in IbSO pro
duced nnd received from other sources ,
237,000,000 pounds of lard nnd shipped 310-
000,000 , pounds. The excess was supposed to
cover the adulterations used.
Since April 17 , when tno United States
treasurer issued his circular , the government
has purchased * -i2,70-JOUO of 4 per cent bonds
nnd § 10,585,500 of 4 } „ per cents , or n total of
W3,29S,1 < K ) . The entire cost of the bonds
bought has been $40,333,21. The total cost
of the same at maturity would have been
$4l,219.fe01. The saving on both classes of
bonds bought amounts to over .5HOl.OJO. ) ( )
Mackerel are quoted nearly 100 per cent
higher than they usually are at this reason ,
owing to the meager catch. The rise in
prices has failed to bring out anything like
the usual supplies from any quarter , and
these arc for the most part of inferior qual
ity. As n conscqucuuo buyers arc taking but
one-half one-fourth the usual
- or - quantities ,
the mnsses naturally using thorn very spar-
In ( fly when they are dearer than fresh meats.
It 'may seem early in the season to begin
the work of next winter's logging , but al
ready men and tea'ns are going into the
woods in Michigan to prepare for the heavier
work of the winter months , and from now
until the end of the year steady additions to
tlio force will bo made. There are no evi
dences pointing to any change in the policy
of loggers and timber owners in cutting
their pine , and a big log "crop" may bo
counted upon.
