[ Special Telegram to TIIK llin,1 : The wheat market was in a very nervous stutu to-day. Uvus not u broad mar ket iu the Konsc that the whole world was in It , but the volume of trade , nevertheless , was very large. Cables were strong and advanc ing in the HngllMi and continental markets as ( | uotcd in public and private dispatches. I'arls was especially strong on Hour and the continent was a good buyer , ovnn an anxious one , In many instances. Newt. from the northwest was conlllctlni. , l > u't In the main it leaned toward the bti'il sulo. Dal- rymplo , the big farmer , was quoted as tele graphing that DaUoVu nnd Minnesota would raise a full crop of straw this year , and two-tliirds of a crop of wheat. Dalrymplo probably knows no more than any ono of fiOO men who have been sending advices from ttmt country , but his llguro of speech struck thu crowd as n happy one and his remark went the rounds. Then the 1'ost failure In New York helped to stimulate the nervous ness around tlio opening. Ills interest In the market was exaggerated and it was ofll- dally stated late In the day at 1,800,000 bushels of short wheat und 1,000,000 bushels of long corn , but at the beginning operators acted as though they thought the failure might have an effect on prices , nnd perhaps It did. At liny rate the market opened Btrong at S0e for September and S'.ljjo for December and advanced Jfo for the lirst month nnd J c for the latter. On tlio bulge there was enormous realising for local and general art-omit. Tlio disposition to realise profits seemed to be widespread. Hutchin son was represented to bo u largo buyer of September anil October and u seller of Do- ccniber. The crowd was very largely bull ish , but nine out of ten of the active oper ators were in expectation of a reaction. An advance of 4(2Sc ( per bushel from the last hulling place and bijiOe from the bottom , Btruck the conservative clement as being quite enough for the time being , and advlcu was freely given to take profits and wait for a chance to get iu at the lower prices. This nuvlfc. of course , did not spring from the radical bulls and it enraged them to hear it. There are very few who do not freely concede that the situation warrants the present advance , and , ultiuiatelymucli higher prices still but there is a little too much of one-man muscle In the present boom to in spire the veterans and public with subllmo contUlcnco in its permanency. It Is not the advance but the way It was made that makes "old timers" just a mite cautious at this juncture. Hcnco the frequency of advices to "tako prollts. " Sure enough there was u reaction. The market worked back from ? % for September and Mo ) for December to &UJ'fiiby(1o ( ( and bS > 4c for two months in the order named. The break was caused by rcalblng , by raiding and by the receipt of u budget of bearish news from New York , in which easier English cables and the cancel lation of late English buying orders were mentioned as the reasons why Uhero should bo a reaction. On the downturn a big trade was done in tlio pit. A break developed tlio fact that a great lot of wheat had been bought on the bulge upon which holdcis did not propose to take a loss. There was , how ever , BOino very good buying , and the do- cllno was very far from being a rush , but closings show a shrinkage of } < | @ 3 e as com pared with yesterday. The market is get ting its reaction. The corn market was rather quiet most of the day , and developed no especial feature. Uusiness wns largely local and mostly of a scalping character. The opening was rather easy and somewhat below last night's close owing largely to higher temperature re ported from the corn bolt , nnd September sold , soon after the opening , as low as 44 % © 44Kci split. Hut the market developed con siderable strength when wheat went up , nnd the shorts bought rather freely , September Belling sparingly at 44J < @ 15c , split. Prom this point there was an inogular dcclino to 44Kc. The market then improved some , closing at 45c. September at the close was about > c lower than it closed last night. October was about J < e lower , and May was nearly unchanged. The market as n whole wns featureless nnd changes with out significance. Oats were quiet to-day , though steady and flrm on all futures within a narrow range. August was in slightly hotter request than n few days ago , while other near months nnd seller the year attracted little interest under an absence of outside trading orders , ruling about 'lie higher than yesterday. May was in fair demand and * fc higher early , but sub sequently ruled easier owing to the partial withdrawal of buyers. No. a regular was in fair demand with sales of car lots early at " 5 } c and 2oc bid Inter. 1'rovisions recovered share of a good yes terday's depression. The opening was timid nnd on an uvorago at a shade easier prices , but it soon became apparent that the senti ment of trade had experienced a changeover night , and with restricted offerings the mar ket promptly advanced. During the bettor portion of the day the feeling , in fact , was strong , and from initial quotations , pork sold lip 20i2 : c , lard TM@10o nnd short ribs lOc. A little of this improvement was after wards lost , yet at the adjournment pork showed an actual advance of 12J c , lard of 7)j@10c and short ribs of ! ) J < < 23 . CHICAGO JjlVK STOCK. CIIIOAOO , August 21 ( Special Telegram to TUB HBK. | UATTI.E Uuslness was fairly active , with little or no change in values as compared with yesterday , yet 25@)0o ; ) lower on fair to good natives than last week A heavy run of Texans and rangers sent prices down 10@l ! > e. Out of 22,000 cattle In sight in the various markets this morning , over 11,000 were Texans nnd rangers ; hence the downturn in all the markets. Common na tive steers sold slow and perhaps a shade off. Common and canning cows , bulls and other low grade stock had to stand a snare of the decline. Veal calves were in fair demand and steady. [ Special Telegram to THE DEE. ] STOCKS The general list opened slightly below last night's close , the only Important changes being a loss of % iu Missouri Pacific and a gain of X ' " New York Central. Early trading developed a strong tone , and values during the first half hour advanced on tolerably largo business in most of the active stocks. The Vanderbllts were es pecially active and { or a Uiuo there was quito n bullish feeling on the floor , based on strong initldo supiwt given these stocks and coalers. Wednesday , August 22 , 1833. The quality of the cattle on sale was about an average of the past few days , the bulk be ing western cuttlo with very few desirable beef cattle. While strictly prime corn fed cattle would probably have brought steady prices , the market was lOo lower on such beef cattle as there were here. Hutcheia stack , cows , etc. , was blow and dull at barely steady prices. Feeders were steady but tha number sold was not large. . The receipts of hogs were moderate and thu market was fairly active at a decline ol 5c. The quality of the hogs was hardly as good on an average as yesterday and there were no tappy loads. The receipts of cholcx light hogs weighing about 170 Ibs fall short of supplying the demand and It has been lav possible to till eastern orders. The market closed with everything sold. Hliecp. Her hogs are said to bo the fattest , the slickest , ami thu gi easiest on the market , and they are shipped in greater numbers to Chicago than the swine of nny other city. So the report comes to us. Of late they have been bringing a good price , too. Last week they were worth $ il. ! > ( ) in the town itself , nnd ns high as 0 ( V > in Chicago , while in Kansas City the prices did not range above f ! .3 , " ) . No cause Is given for this stiff start by our southern exchanges , and it is not known whether somebody is trying to bull the mar ket or take It by the whole hog. However that may bo , the prices are most gratifying ; it shows the raiser that his attention cannot bo diverted from hogs altogether and that they are indeed among the best of paying stock.
