WT f r THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : WEDNESDAY , AUGUST 22. 1888 : THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , Unusual Activity , With Some Excitement - citomont In tbo Wheat Fit CORN FAILS TO FOLLOW SUIT. Oati Rule Quiet But Steady A Fairly Good IJuilncM In ProYlslons Cat lie Slow and Un ntU- fnctory IOKH Actird. OU1OAGO PRODUCE MARKET. CHTCAOO , AugmtSl. [ Special Telegram to THE DM. ! Wheat experienced a further im provement of J @JiO this morning , after which the market halted and prices reluc tantly dragged back. On the advance a great lot of long wheat was sold out and the majority of traders seemed to 1x3 watting lor * reaction. The philosophy of the reasoning w.-n that a Ojc bulge was enough for onetime time and that a natural reaction of l@2c was In order. Hutchlnson took the big end of the load of long wheat for September that was dumped upon the market , and ho was glwsn tlio main credit for sustaining values during the first two or three hours of trad ing. While he was buying September hovas nclllng December , and the result was that the difference between these deliveries narrowed fully J c from the ruling quotations of yesterday. Whllo Sep tember was being held with reasonable fltcudlncfts around 60) < @SOj/c , December was declining from & 9 , ' c to bc. The latter re covered and sold back to 88J ( VJ8SXc , but It was at no time during the day as strong us September. There was a roaring trade In the pit early In the day. The opening was wild and brokers were buying and selling at J @ ? c difference in prices in different parts of the pit. For September the llrst olllclul quotation was & 5J < c. In less than twenty minutes &OJfc was the quoted price , Decem ber , In the meantime , going from 88X lo 69'ifc. There was a rush of tolcgrnbhlc mall and verbal orders In the hands of brok ers to be executed during the opening hour end after that tlicro was a lull. The tele graph ofllces were not so actively rusliod as on yesterday , though the volume of outside business shows conclusively that the market Is broadening and that the public is at length taking Interest In wheat. This same public , which turned the cold shoulder to wheat when It wus a drug at 78c , is seeing great merit in the article 8e higher. Possibly it Is worth more , for since wheat was selling below 80o the proof has como to hand that previous estimates of the .old world crop shortage were not exaggerations , and thcro is evidence at hand that the spring wheat iTui > is not going to como up lo earlier expec tations , while tno receipts of winter wheat satisfy the trade that In weight the I.TOP of Isbh will bo below un average. These arc factors that have entered into tlie situation recently ana upon which conservatlvo traders , who held back when wheat was booming last spring , arc now onthusiiiir. Xeivs generally was bullish. The merchantrlass of buyers did not part with their wheat us the professionals hoped mid cash wheat markets every where were held steady by the bids of millers and ex porters. When it was discovered that the market had sold out early the shorts took to Midden ( light. This caused September wheat to climb from fc(5t4'c ( to 89' ' < c , and December from SS'e ' to is ! ) ' < ' September beat the previous record and December gqt back to tlio top. This llui-y. came about half an hour before the close and was the most In teresting episode of the session. It over turned the prearranged programme for n reaction of J < ; c. This corn market was a shade firmer parly with a fair line of buying , presumably to cover shorts , and September sold at 4 lKu ( > 45c , though very sparingly at the outsldo. Later tlio feeling cliunucd to weakness and there was free selling with buyers inclined to hold off , and September sold gradually to 44 > c , being a decline of > ; c from early top prices. Tlici o was some reaction later when corn showed so much strength , hut it cased off , closing easy with September about Jjc lower than It closed last night. October was unchanged mid May about ! 4c higher. The strong feeling In wheat was not reflected to any extent by the corn market. May is gradually attracting more attention. Oats \veroiiiiet | though fully steady. Early In the session tlicro was some buying by prominent local operators and prices were forced up ( g' o on near futures with un easiness ruling later and closings much as these of yesterday. The estimated receipts for to-morrow are less than to day's supply and under unusually liberal buying of cash oats , to go to store , prices were } j@/c higher at 25@25'-ro for No , 8. August sold up to 25JYU early , ruling easier later with Oc tober and May In fair request and inclined to flrmnrss. At the morning provision call the sales made aggregated 13,750 barrels of pork , ti.S.'C tierces of lard , and 'JOO.OOO ' nounds of short rib * . In the open market increased activity was the rule. There was no marked liberality In the business transacted , yet operators of all classes took hold with considerable freedom and moro than ordinary interest was shown : Hutchinson was the largest individual tradci In the pit and his course was somewhat mys tifying. Ho sold lard freely but in short ribs and pork his buying was on an exten sive scale throughout. In the general trade the bear side was regarded with the grcatoi favor. Barring Hutehinson's operations , tin big aion took no active part in supporting the market , and as advices about the yellow fever from the south tended to cioutn more or less uneasiness , u nervous feeling was de veloped. Trading opened at about ycster day's last prices but during the day pork sold otT2JH@2.-c. lard lOu and.siort ! ribs 15c , Pork subsequently recovered a little of it : lost ground , though at the adjournment the decline shown amounted to 10@l2 > * c. Lur end short ribs closed at the lowest figure touched. CHICAGO iavi ; STOCK.
