Corn follow * the Lend ofVhcnt OntH Active I'rovlslonH Much Improved Cattle niul llo s In Good Dcinunil. CHICAGO PRODUCE MAHKKT. CniCAOo , August 17. [ Special Telegram to TUB UKE.I The wheat market opened up ) @ % higher this morning on reports of fiosts In the northwest. Judging from the signal service map and from private ndvlces from a great inuny iralntslho district visited by frosts embraces the northern half of Dakota , the northwestern quarter of Minnesota seta and practically all of Manitoba. The temperature throughout Unit district ranged from 'M to 80 degrees , and otic-quarter Inch of Ice Is reported from several points. Frost is reported ni far south as Aberdeen , thus nhowlng that the southern line Is somewhat ragged and Irregular. The extent of the damage can as yet only bo guessed at , but the plant In the northern territory was cer tainly not In condition to stand a freeze with out Injury. This frost news was the most sensational feature of the day , and unques tionably stimulated speculative Inquiry to n considerable extent. Commission mer chants reported increased business from every quarter and a general dcslro on the part of the bears to cover was mani fested. The buying wa not all to satisfy this demand , however , for If It had been the market would nave broken all to jileccs. On the part of the vast majority of "longs" there was an overpowering disposi tion to icallzo profits. Lo < ul bulls unloaded largely , nnd most of the New York houses that havu been conspicuous buyers from Sic up sold steadily through the session. Local scalpers got long early In the day , and sev eral times during the day when the prices for September got below 84 > o It looked us though they were preparing to run , but the outside support was so strong that recovery followed Immediately every time. Fluctu uttons during two-thirds of the session were within 8 ! % < < i84Jfc for September , and b7 @ 87 } o for December. The market was ex ceedingly nervous nnd treacherous , and brokers were evidently loaded with orders to flt almost every condition. Within the narrow range prices bobbed about inces- antly. The reaction for whlcu luu leaders were playing didn't ' eventuate , and a great many concluded to advance their buying limit when they saw the market acting stub bornly. The top was reached soon ufter the opening , when September touched 84c , and December 87c. Hutchinsou was a largo buyer early on the reaction , taking possibly 1,000KK ( ) bushels from 8l fc to 84 } c. His brokers happened to bo in the pit Just in tlmo to catch wheat that Ouduhy's brokers were offering. The market developed amaz ing nnd unexpected powers of absorption. The closing ranee was practically at the bottom tom for the day. bub the bottom is a full > o ubovo yesterday's last prices , and J/u above yesterday's average. The bulk of trade to day was done fully Ic above yesterday's ' av erage. September closed at 84J o nnd December - comber nt bfj c. The dealings in a specula tive way were on a largo scute , the market being broader than for some days past. The corn market was strong and higher to day and at times there was a display of con siderable nervousness , accompanied by spcculativn activity. The speculative strength seemed to bo largely the outgrowth of a fear lest the boundaries of the frost area bo extended into the northern corn bolt , in which event great damage must necessarily result. Thcro has been no damugo yet , but fear is as potent a factor sometimes as reality. It will not dote to euy that the feeling in corn is genuinely bullish , for such is not the case , but the variable veterans in trade arc trimming tncir sales to bo in readiness to meet any emer gency. They do not anticipate a real frost- Bcaro , but should ono occur they do not pro pose to bo caught Bleeping. Hutchluson llKured on both sides of the market nnd ho Bcemod quite as much nt sea as any of the little fellows. Prices receded X ° from the extreme outsldo and closed % ( < l > % a higher than yesterday or the opening range , which wan the bottom for the day. September ranged at 44-t5o and closed at 44c. October ranged at 44t5 c , closing ut . Oats were fairly active and } { ( fi4c higher. Receipts were smaller than anticipated , and fair buying orders were noted for future delivery. The market sympathized with other cereals , and only nt advanced ilgures did sellers appear. The Inspection sheet ex hibited something of an improvement In quality , with 41 cars of No. 3 outof a total of 155. This month ut ono tlmo sold up J e , ruling easier Inter , with September In fair request at W6u ° advance , while there was nn improved Inquiry for year and May , with the latter selling ui > } { c. No. 3 oats In store were in moderate request nt 25 c , or Jf c ad vance , with sales largely by sample. The provision trade witnessed a remark- nblo recovery of confidence. Trading opened nt nn advance In prices nnd with an Improved showing of activity , nnd nt tbo morning call sales were made of 2,7. > 0 bar rels of pork , ll,25o tierces of lard nnd 700,000 barrels of short ribs. Public business was comparatively aetlvo from the start. The shorts covered freely. Ilutchlu- son nnd other heavy holders were liberal buyers , and among traders generally the long side was regarded with great tavor. Outsldo purchases were ulso larger than on uny day for over n week. Trading , in ti word , was more than sufficient to bo interest ing , and while extreme outsldo prices touched were not maintained , the market sustained n material appreciation. Private nnd public ndvlces from the south reported the subsl denco of the cxoitement over yellow fever , nnd nil indications favored Increased buying on consumptive account. In fact the orden received to-day showed a marked Improve incut , and of meats quite n largo amount was taken for southern distribution. In pork the day's fluctuations covered n range of 15@25e , nnd in lard and short ribs lOc. The Inside prices prevailed nt the opening , nnd tin highest quoted \veVo paid before the nooi hour. Hnsed on yesterday's closings the advance actually established amounted tc 2JK 5' ° "U l > oH < . 7 > tf@lOo on lard , and 12 } c on nhort ribs. CHICAGO 1,1VE STOCK. CHICAOO , August 17. [ Special Telegram to Tun linn. ] STOCKS Thcro was n fairly steady aliening to the stock market this morning at prices close to the leaving off place last night , but the feeling became quite weak after the first few minutes , under re newed attacks by the recently formed bear clique. St. Paul was the first to give way , but the whole list soon followed. The vol ume of business was a little larger than yes terday morning , though not n great deal. Heavy soiling by Chicago houses broke Lake Shore , and that stock soon led the list with n material decline. Northwestern was again on the down grade with St. 1'nul , and during the first half hour dropped nearly 1 point , the rest ef the active stocks following , though not to that extent. There was , after the early depreciation , n slight rally and a llttlo steadier feeling , but toward noon it be came unsettled once tnoro anil was rather feverish. Temporary reactions for the bet ter , though they were small , recurred at short Intervals , but as a rule the recovery an not maintained nnd further losses were ecorded in Gould stocks and Grangers as the ay were away. Coalers , however , were -omparatlvely - steady , nnd bear attacks on icm were without much ofTcct. The rail- -ond - situation did not show any improvc- nent. In trunk lines the Vandcrbllts , in- lead of advancing , reduced the cattle rate , nd also the dressed beef rate to Now York , vith some prospect of a reduction In grain ntcs. The break that occurred in the morn- ng was taken advantage of by the bears to : ever short lines nnd about 10,000 shares ot 3t. Paul and other stocks were bought in. n the afternoon a crop scare was worked by ho bears , and the market went oft rather harply with Grangers and Lake Shore well 11 the lead. The linal close was weak ut bout the lowest prices of the day , St. Paul , howlng a loss of 1 > , Northwestern 1 % , Omaha 1 , Lake Shore 1 } < , Missouri Pacific and the general list J4'if ( , as compared , vith cho opening.
