the somewhat , meaty ana significant remark
of a lending grain merchiint Ibis afternoon.
Limited orders lor it very largo quantity of
wheat hiivo been in tlio linmls nf exporters
In New V'ork for some tlmu and the opinion
IB entertained In pome quarlers that the
innrkot has boon depressed oy main strength ,
to a point that would unable brokers to lill
these limited orders. The explanation Is
HUlllclenUy reasonable for belief by well In
formed poisons. That there is manual ac
tivity In the cash murkct Is apparent. Ship
ments fiom woilern and seaboard points tire
on n lurgo scale nnd there Is good reason 'or '
stating that n very largo amount ol wheat
additional has been sold In western
markets for immediate shipment. The
details arc not jet made public and
* ll the reports ol port woikings may bo cxag-
Vi gcniled. The clearances hero and at other
S lake polls In the next few days will demon
strate whether thu statement circulated to
day Is true that not less than l.OOJ.OOUbushels
of wheat line been sold for shipment within
the lust two days. Exporters have rarely
been less communicative than to-day. They
net on the maxim followed by Commodore
Vmidurbilt , who WUH wont to advise his
friends not to "tell anybody what you are
going to do till you do it. " Until business at
hand is consummated , shippuis arc , as a rule ,
mum. This Is one of their days in thnt line.
The prossuri ) on the wheat market was not
lifted until nearly the close of the
session , when a reaction ol ? ac from tUu lo
decline was pormiUed. The market opened
JfCxdc elf on easier English und continental
cables , accompanied by news of brighter
woiitlicrnhroud. From b'Jo ! for September
and 8. > % c for December , the mm kut worked
down to 8'iko undS&c , recovering and closing
ut 8.1)1 , © Oil c and 5gf respectively. Trade
was above the average volume. Tlio market
was n imapiiointmenttotho trade in general ,
but it worked lo suit the scalping bears.
There is , however , a very firm undertone to
the market at the decline , though improving
weather conditions abroad iniij result in a
reaction to continental ami English markets.
The corn market had n weak opening , and
tmnoness was thu prevailing iciituro for u
time. Spirited buying by Uryiint and two or
three others advanced September from -iri' ' o
to 400 nnd October from 44jjC ! to Ilie. 1'rlces
subsequently worked backed to the lowest
point but recovered something of their pre
vious vigor during the last half hour and
closed at Wiy.4rii' ( for September and -J4e
for October , or about yestei day's closing
range. Business in tlio pit was on rather a
largo scale , trades in round lots being quite a
common thing.
Oats lacked animation. Receipts , though
light , were nearly all inspected as new oats.
The opening wan at about steady figures , but
under the estimated small arrivals for to
morrow placed at DO cars near futures
ruled 'i@J40 ; higher. Trading orders were
only moderate with this ami next month the
favorite futures , though transactions were
restricted , as buyers and sellers were often
apart in their views. For August there was
considerable inquiry at 25 c , with the next
month at 3 @le discount : October was in
fair demand and May quiet. New No. 2 oats
in store were saleable at about 25c , with old
oats llrmly held and nominally higher at ' „ , <

Provisions rather surprised the general run
of operators by a severe decline. A weak
feeling was developed over night , and the
market opened with an unexpected disposi
tion among Into buyers to sell , coupled with
indifference upon the part of packers
to aunport prices. In the entire trade
a marked change was noticeable in the tone ,
und of pork initial sales were made at n de
cline of 10(7il2 ( ) > c , while lard opened 7 c and
short ribs fie lower. Later opening prices
were improved in some instances a little , but
the upward turn vns sadly wanting In back
bone , mid under free offerings prices receded
largely and severely. From the best figures
made pork broke 250 , lard ? @ 10c and short
ribs 2U@2r > c. There was subsequently some
recovery from this depreciation , but it was
poorly supported and comparatively limited.
The closings compared with yesterday's final
prices showed a net decline of 22J @ 25e on
pork , lytQWu on lard and 2 ( oj'7Kc on short
ribs.
