[ Special Telegram to TUB UBE. ] The wheat market did not hold its own to-dny. Nuws wus bullish from nearly every Btandiolut | , hut general upeou- liitlvo Buppoit wus lacking , and values settled back J/tfilc. The tenor of the foreign advices Is still unfavorahlo on crops , hut oc casional mention Is mudo of bri htcnlnc weather. Weather ciiblcs , however , were conlllctlng , and brought both buying and selling ordorx. The opinion nccined to prevail - vail after all the news was In from the other oidc that foreign markets have halted for the ttmo being. Ono trader had u cable chron icling an advance , but these particular ad vancing cables have been received with reg ularity for Bovcral weeks , mid huvo ceased to have much effect. They huvo come to bo looked upon as Nightengale's cables , which last summer quoted declin ing foreign markets dally for several months until the total shrinkage was found to amount to * 1.S4 per bushel. However , there can ho no gainsaying the fuel that the situation at homo nnd abroad is very strong. For instance , the clearances of wheat and Hour from Atlantic ports for the dav wcro equivalent to 40.1,0 0 bushels , while receipts nt all the primary markets were not in excess of 000ru3 , bushels , Advices ngreo that ship- l > eis have iv hard tlmo getting cash wheat on limited orders. As high as SSJ o has been bid in Duluth wlthen the lust day or two , und 8c was bid to-day. Shipments from thai point are heavy , and there is active Inquiry for cash grain atovcry market In the country. Property is stiniy held everywhere. The weaknefiB Is In the absence of gen eral speculative Inquiry und it is argued that then ; cannot be u serious shrinkage In the value of wheat for future delivery so long as actual grain is so well thought of. The force of thU position must bo admitted. There was cvidonco to-day of 11 concerted effort on the part of the leading local opera tors to depress values by using foreign houses to sell through. Whether , as many insisted , the drive was made to got a good market to buy on ta an undecided question. Certain it Is that blu traders were making a maximum amount of nolso and doing a mini mum amount of selling. September wheat I opened at SI.Vc , sold off to 8.'lXc. between J which point and KiXc It fluctuated most of the day. Shortlv after IS o'clock the price got down to & .1Jl ( < $ bUc and the feeling was ono of weakness. Good buying occurred , howcvor , and the market advanced ife , closing stubbornly strong at a % v higher imsls than yesterday. During the last half hour several tclegrums were received from Duhotii nnnounclng that the agricultural nee- retary of that territory had reduced his estl- > * mate of the wheat yield from in to 20 per cent from cstlnmtu made July 1. This did not create particular excltement.as it was merely an of- llclal continuation of private Information which had been generally accepted as accu- nito by the trade. During the session Octo ber whuat ranged from &W to 83e and closed nt S3c. December opened at br > Xc , sold up to Slic , olt to fc5J u several times , llnally going to Sr/@S.i h'c , and closing ut 83s. , @S5J c. The volume of trade in the pit wus lews than for the two days last preced ing. Commission mcrchantsas a rnlo , acrco In the statement that they have dlftlculty In keeping customers off the short side which the majority of advisers seem to regard as hazardous Just now. For the country to bo generally bearish is a rare circumstance , nnd it Is csiKicIally remarkable now when the situation looks so strong to most of the "expert market gucsscrs. " Howoverthe mar ket has had a 5gO ( advance , which is con siderable. The corn market was weak and lower. The opening was strong ut ' ( JJ o above yesterday's closing range , viz : At 47c for September and ( ) } ( for October. Septem ber sold up to 47 @ 47Js' nnd October to 4 ( ' Xc. That proved to bo the top. The bottom was 40Ko for September and 45Jff@45J.fo for Oc tober , with year quoted at 8'JJfc , with May at COKoTno decline represents a shrinkage of filc. During the most of the session the greatest weakness was In deferred futures , the pressure upon year and May causing n noticeable heaviness. Reports from Kansas wcro that the weather there continues to bo furnace hot , western Kansas suffering most , but as very little corn is produced in the western purl of that state the news was not alarming. Uecoipts continue liberal but not excessive. Oats wcro dull and weak with u fractional decline noted in all futures. Receipts were moderate , and more than half inspected as now oats. Buyers of cash discriminated ngalnst these , which wcro at a discount. Old No. 2 onts in store wcro slow nt about SSJ MXo. In the speculative market there Was no support , with few buying orders , und while moderate ) favor was shown near futures , long months wore neglected. August hovered around "Wo and next month de clined from 24J o early , which was slightly better than j cstcrday's close , to 24c , with i lay dull at figures around -so. Provisions experienced a "slump" that completely upset the calculations of the board and occasioned a general upheaval in the niurlcct. As the uftlclul showing of the amount of lard on hand in this city was uni versally discredited , business opened In a nervous manner. Operators acted as if they wore "at sea" and when the first sales of lard showed n decline of Bo a stronger disposition was manifested In that article as well as In short ribs and pork to realize. Pork and short ribs were for a brief tlmo relatively stronger than lard , but they promptly sympathised with it , and on the bieaU taut followed pork rather monopolized attention. In the last named article unusual excitement In fact was witnessed. For September delivery pork opened at $14.M > , sold nt SM.bTVJ , broke on Cu nnd lOo declines to f 14.MJ , and then , under a pressure of offerings , dropped In rood-sized jumps to $13.i > 5. From this llguro It sub sequently rallied 52 } o and llnally closed 4'-o bettor than the day's ' lowest point. U'hllo " : was making its decline of tr.&te , C" and short ribs fell oil inc. Short ribs recovered afterwards a fraction of the ground lost but on lard the feeling was quito heavy and there was little or no improve ment. Lard for September ranged from t in down to $ S.bO and short ribs fiom * S.WK aown to ? S.)7 ! ) > i. Hascd on yesterday's final closings , the actual decline in pork was 47 ! (357 ( 'c , in lard 20c and In bhort ribs liic. CHICAGO ItlVK STOCK. CHICAGO , August 2. ( Special Telegram to THE UEE. | UATTLI : Trade was a shade more uctlvo than for a day or two past. One lot of fancy made $0.70. FINANCIAL. Nr.w YOIIK , August 2. [ Special Telegram to TIIK HEH. ] STOCKS Interest in the stock market centered In the Vnnderbllts , New England and St. Paul. Trading during the morning was lighter , and up to noon only 03,435 shares changed hands. Efforts wcro made to boom Lake Shore , as there Is a hob- tailed pool in It , nnd they wanted to get prices up to help the rest of the list. Parties who watch the market closely , again assert that the recent heavy purchases have been for the Vandorbllt family , and that the dividends will bo Increased. It Is rather too BOOHhowever , to talk about a larger dividend , as the meeting docs not occur for several months. It is claimed by some that the basis for the dividend story was that a largo quantity of wheat would soon DO moved from the west to the seaboard over the Vanderbllt roads and which would materially Increase the earnings. This is rather n thin basis to buy stocks on , as the roads have not been able to get any wheat , ns shippers are using the lake route. Uoston parties who have been buy ing on the market for several days withdrew their support , as they favored a reaction of 2 points. London was n seller , and the mar ket for American securities there opened off and had rather a depress ing effect. At the opening llrst prices were generally } $ ® % per cent lower , though Heading nnd Lake Shore wcro kept up 1 nor cent. Further small fractions wcro lost In early dealing , but the market soon rallied , and under the lead of Now England quickly ad vanced to above the opening1. Now England gained % per cent. Advances in the rest of the list , however , were insignifi cant except a i Iso of 1 per cent in Oregon Improvement. A feverish and generally heavy feeling developed and most of the active stocks dropped below the opening figures and the market be came slow. The action of St. Paul again surprised its friends , who claim that there is less of stock afloat than is generally supposed , the low price inducing an unsuc cessful absorption of it. The market was well filled with stocks during the last hour , and every attempt to bid up any particular stock brought out fresh blocks. Free selling caused an easy feeling , and reactions wore noted , except in Lake Shore , which re mained fairly steady. Closing sales wcro on an Irregular market , Lake Shore being up % of n point , Canada Southern fjf , Now England % . The rest of the active list showed declines extending to 1 point , Heading hav- inc the lead. Worst , the crop expert , furnishes the following condensed statement of the obser vations In the northwest concerning the crop outlook. This statement Is dated July 30 : The condition of growing crops during the past fortnight were about ns hero described. Spring wheat In eastern Dakota and south of Milbank to a line drawn oven with northern lown , 1ms n thin stand , just headed and badly rusted. In Minnesota , on the lines between Watorton and Milbank after leaving the Da kota line and between that and St. Paul , the stand is good and about half the fields are headed , the other half heading ; about ono half is promising , the other half injured by rust. These same conditions , two days later , give the character of the fields between St. Paul and Fargo. On the Minnesota side of the Red river vallev from the North ern Pacific to the boundary line at St. Vincent , this crop , besides rust , yns materially hurt by being drowned out. : lero it is safe to say the crop will full short of last year by fully 20 per cent. In the im- mediuto Red river valley , on the Dakota side , from Wahpeton to Grand Forks , the promise s better than a year ago , while from Grand forks north prospects nro not as good. Then igain , from Grand Forks east to nearly Devil's lake , and south from Laninoro to within five miles of the main line of the Northern Pacific ntCassclton , the fields look nearly as yellow : is gold and fully 40 percent jtiownd no uigns of hcudinu on the 25th inst. North und west of Devil's lake mni south of the Northcrn"Pacillc to Cheyenne prospects nro good , Again , in Minnesota , south of St. Paul , und between Munkota und the Missis sippi , the act-cage seeded is scarcely more than one-third of last year , and hero , too , chinch bugs huvo done important injury , al though light us compared with last season. In Iowa the acreage is small , nnd being badly lodged , as well as rusted by general storms , this crop must bo poor , ns well as small. Al together , I do not think it possible that this year's crop in Minnesota und Dakota can yield within 10 per cent of a year ago , and that this entire crop , measured by receipts at Chicago , Milwaukee , Minneapolis and Duluth will fall 15 per cent short. Oats , in Illinois and Iowa , nro badly lodged and rusted , and while the loss to what they would have been but for this Injury is fully 20 per cent , yet the largo acreage is likely to make this a fair crop. In these states har vest Is now general. In Minnesota und Da kota this crop is still green , but prospects are good. Rye , north and west of our city , is a heavy crop , and is now being mostly harvested in shock. Hurley Is a light crop , and where fields are heavy is discolored. Corn has good growth nnd color , and the indications are for a good crop , but owing to an ordinary or common stand I cannot call it any better than good. However , the acreage is larger than usual. Hay , although much injured by the exten sive storms of 4th and 13th inst , is doubtless ono of the largest ever secured nt this date. The CoiTee Market. The now crop of Brazilian coffee is being marketed quite freely and prices are weak ening , although there is a fairly active de mand from all parts of the coffee-drinking world. Omaha wholesale grocnry merchants have received some sample bags and they show up very nicely. Evidently the crop is a big ono nnd good in point of quality. At Rio Janeiro the stock of cofl'eo has been In creased to 100,000 bags , against u total of 157,000 bags a week earlier and 203,000 baps a year ago : nnd at Santos the stock is given as i > 0noi , ) hags (27,000 ( bags in second hands ) . The frco arrivals und Increusing accumula tions nt the ports of outlet tend to depression and private cables note heaviness. The week's export purchases reached 25,000 bags at Rio Janeiro for the United States und at Santos 3,000 , against receipts at Rio Janeiro of bO.OOO bags and at Santos of 15,000 bags. The re ceipts nt Rio Janeiro July 1 to 25 were 2S3.000 bags and at Santos 52,000 bags , against dur ing the same tlmo lust year respectively 8S- 000 and 09,000 bags. OMAHA. ItlVK STOCK. Cnttlu.
