A comprMnl from I'ltitto Cciitt'f of ti
licctiHiirly aggravating nature Was filed
before the Btnlo board of ItaiiHporlatlon
thin morning. It rolulos that the Union
Pacific1 Hnilrond company has ru-
) > cntudly been usked by tlio Plntto Cen
ter Hlcvntor iihsocitition for a t-uiUiblc
bite Uon uhh'h to build an elevator ,
and a eidu track nucobyiry for the easy
aliininiMit of the grain that the company
might handle. Such procure was
brought to bear on tlio company hint
fall that Mr. Motion was sent to the
place to provide for the site and
the necessary side track. Uoth
were promised. The elevator company
was satiHliod , silenced and consequently
happy. Yet the Hito WIIH not selected at
that time. Other olllcials of the road
imiat be consulted about this matter.
Meden went his way , and the grain men ,
merchants and farmers waited for word
as to where the bite was to bo located ,
that tlio olouitor might bo worked and
equipped. No word wime. Hut the el
evator company continued to buy grain
and products of the farmers as fast as
the cars on track could bo obtained for
the commercial change. This grow
tiresome. Jtboon became intolor.uit and
the Union Pacific authorities hayo
Binco boon asked again and again
to fulfill the promise of their
agent and provide them the desired ele
vator site , but thus far without avail.
The elevator company Bland ready to
pay in spot cash whatever reasonable
ju'rchaso price the Union Pacific may
ask for the Hito. This is the first in-
Btance on record that this railroad com
pany ban over refused to sell any portion
of their real estate for an honest price
unless it had been reserved for the
bpticial uju of the corporation. As a
reason for this pure bred cusped-
ncbs , it in stated that lloimbaugh
& Morriman operate an elevator
nt Platte Centre in which the
Union Pacific is believed to own a con
trolling interest , and by freight extor
tions the robbing is carried into the
purchase price of farm products by
Crowding out competition. At least the
actions of the railroad compiinj domon-
Btrutn tills. The elevator company
asks the board if there is a remedy , and
if so to point it out.

MR. ENDICOTT SNUBBED.

Baltimore Sun : Secretary Endicott is
not a frequent visitor to the capltol , and
therefore it is not strange that the
doorkeepers of congress do not know
him when they see him. lie had occa-
bion to visit the sonata to-day , mid when
ho applied to one of the doorkeepers
for information regarding the wherea
bouts of n certain senator the senate

to the ladies' reception room. We don't

"Hut , " said the secretary , "I simply
uisli to ascertain if Senator - is in

"And I tell you , " insisted tlio door
keeper grullly , "that you must go
around to the ladies' reception room. "
It was a very embarrassing moment
for the dignified secretary of war , as
several newspaper men whom ho prob
ably knows by sight _ were present , llo
drew back , sajing that it was very
Htrango that ho could not obtain such a
trilling bit of information without so
much ceremony. Mortified and con
fused , ho bumped intoSonatorVoorhecs ,
who was entering the senate chamber.
The latter came to tlio assistance of the
'secretary and escorted him triumph
antly into tlio democratic cloak room ,
where ho was first introduced to a _ glass
of senatorial lemonade , after which lie
was given an opportunity to consult the
senator he was looking for. The door

and had ho but mentioned the fact that
ho was Secretary Endicott there would

president of the board of health , ant
also Dr. William M. Welch , physiciai
in charge of tlio Municipal hospital.
"Such iv thing is possible , " said Dr ,
Ford , "but it lias never boon vcrifiei

SCIENTIFIC EATING.
Varying Conditions Under Which Wo
Can Lint to Satisfaction.
Globe-Democrat : In the considera
tion of how and what wo shall eat ,
many things must bo taken Into consid
eration , tind in the preparation of a
formula by which to bo governed , wo
must make the correct diagnosis of our
necessities. The traditional habit of
blaming the food that wo cat for our
'
troublo'ls not tunable , as is the fact that
the real source of the ditllculty is in
ourselves , and that the blame must be
placed upon the one who eatu rather
than on what has been eaten.
The essentials for u natural indulg
ence of our appetites uo conceive to bo
the following :
1. A lit condition to receive food , de
pendent upon the oxirtting state and
surroundings of the individual at the
time of ingcstion.
- . A fit quality and quantity ot food ,
determined by the geographical hab
itat , occupation and habits of the indi
vidual. .
. " . . A proper preparation and ingestion
of food.
1. A necessity for variety of action
for mind and body , found in exercise ,
recreation , etc.
fi. Host.
Under our first proposition it is at
once BO en that as a man's physical and
mental state varies bo must his diet.
Take , lor instance , an individual who is
greatly fatigued , cither by mental or
phjsionl labor , and let him sit at table
to oat. If lie has been in good health
and his fatigue is the result of a tem
porary cause and ho is done with his
labor ho will experience hunger , have
a good appetite , and can cat heartily.
Yet this man is not in lit condition to
indulge his appetite , either as to qual
ity or quantity , as liberally as ho could
in his usual sliito. In his usual state he
has indulged in every edible food that
was on the table , in a , natural way , witli
bonolit. To-day , fatigued as ho is , ho
automatically , without thought , oats as
usual , meats , vegetables , bueh as cab
bage , cucumbers , watermelon , potatoes ,
etc. , and feels no special discomfort , a
little full possibly , and a few hours
afterward beirins to feel nauseated , re
jects at last the contents of his stomach ,
and finally gets real sick with cholera
morbus. His immediate occupation
is u mental ono and the condemna
tion of liis food is centralized as the
cause of all the dilliculty. lie
fails to realize his bodily in
firmity of fatigue as tlio real cause.
The causes of fatigue are so many and
varied that we bliould know them and
act ticcordingly. Physical or mental
labor , loss of rest , high temperature ,
emotional inlUionces anything which
calls for vital force , if sutllciently pro
longed , moans fatigueand ; wo can read
ily see the many varied causes which ,
in a healthy man , can produce a condi
tion in which ho is not lit to cat.
ft is nothing strange or mysterious
that wo find that the same article of
food will in the bamo individual at one
time bo beneficial , at another delete
rious. There are many inlluonces
which are generated in the individual ,
duo to interference with its functional
equilibrium , or the action of agents in
his surroundings , such as malaria ,
vitiated air , bower gas , etc. , which
bring about conditions that have the
bamo relation to our diet , save that
usually the dictates of the appetite pre
vent trouble by prohibiting indulgence.
Sometimes the premonitory symptoms
of their effects is scon in a morbid ag
gravation of the bcnbo of hunger ,
usually ill the direction of quantity , and
tlio individual , where he hits been pur
suing his usual hivbitb of living , who has
tliis experience , should bo warned that
something is wrong and give it atton-
tion.
tion. That all things edible are eatable , is
still true. But in this wo must not as
sume that all things to all individualb
are edible. Our proposition demands a
consideration of the place of nbodo on
this earth , occupation tvnd habits of the
individual. The first of these presents
as the important essential that of the
tomnoraturo in which wo live. Wo
find that the great demand on the body
for the generation of more or less heat
is according as the temperature ; if this
is low , more ; if hig.h , less heat must bo
i5rf > ' 1noeii to maintain the normal body
heat , while by pr6V'el' clothing and
shelter , wo nro enabled , to meet tins flo-
mand to ft largo extent , wo can in a far
moro effective way do to by n careful
and intelligent attention to our foods.
Tlio great aids for this purpose in cold
climates nro found in the non-nitrogen-
ized class of foods , such as sugarstarch ,
fats , etc. Tlio strongest testimony is
ottered in tlio absolute craving of the
body for fat in the arctic temperatures ,
and the reports of the various explorers
who httvo returned to us , of their
personal experience as well as
observation of the habits and diet of the
natives , are almost incredible : Dr.
Ilayes states that the daily ration of the
Esquimaux is L from twelve to fifteen
pounds of meat , about one-third of
which is fat. On ono occasion ho saw
an Esquimaux eonswmo in one incut ,
lasting over several hours , ton pounds
of walrus llesh and blubber. A remark
able effect was been in the members ol
his own party , some of whichfrom thoii
strong cravings for animal diet , wore
in the habit of drinking the contents
of the oil kettle with evident relish.
At the other extreme , tlio tropieal'wc
find that less animal and moro vegeta
bles and liquids are demanded , fruit be
ing iv most important part of the diet ,
To us , therefore , who are in tlio torn-
porato regions , where the seasons arc
marked by moro strongly drawn linesol
demarcation , the dictittes of nature arc
for a variety and change in
our foods which is not neccs *
bary in tlio other. In winter om
diet should approach that of the
arctics , in summer that of tropic's. Oc
cupation is n strong modifier of oui
food. Ho who is called upon for strong
physical exertion must meet the waste
by a stronger diet than ho who is men
tally laboring or ho who ( iocs little , if
anything. This feature can bo calcu
lated mathematically : xnd the results
bo demonstrated. A comparison was
made between the English and French
laborers in the building of the railroad
from Paris to HOUGH in 1811. The
f French engaged in the work were able
I at first to norfotm only about two-
thirds of the labor accomplished by the
English , and it was givspected that this
was duo to the difference in the diet
Tlio French were placed upon the more
liberal regimen of the English nnil
were then nblo to accomplish an equal
amount of work. Sovoro- mental work
demands a liberal diet , but it is fount
in practice that there is a bettor ca
pacity for mental work whore tlio ani
mal foods are reduced tvnd tbo vegetable
used moro libornlly.

Washington Letter : Tlio wife of ft
congressman docs not have the happiest
of lives. Fancy the preparation of
bor husband 'E > speech. She does not
write it. No , indeed. That would bo
far easier than her task. She well ,
listen to her trialb nnd hear what bhu
docs. The history of tlio speech begins
at home. Perhaps it is a humorous
speech. Heavens , how much domestic
butloring lias been cau.sed by each uoll
"worked up" joke ! The secret history
of the manuscript is bad. _ lL-H"\u ely
concealed from ( lie public. The wife
alone knows it. Tlio pinched and p.ilo
expression of sad resignation on her
face alone tells the story. No ono oUo
knows how those jokes , or those bursts
of eloquence , wear upon the tic-3 of do
mestic happiness.
It is a terrible test of tlio devotion of a
wife to bit and listen to her husband ,
while , with wild gesticulation and
varied tones , bo reads over and over
again some high sounding sentence , '
committing to memory and practicing
its ollocts. What deep and bottled sorrow
row winks into a woman's heart when
bho must listen to a joke nor husband is
memorising ? Hut this not naif of it.
Ordinarily tha preparation of a speech
is tlio result of many days' perhaps
weeks' work. During this lime the
wife is a thing to be practiced upon.
Night and day , at all times , borne fi ag-
menv of that speech , either in t-ouiid or
the manuscript , is somewhere about tlio
house. When the httbband is at homo
ho is either reading it , talking about it
or repeating fragments to himself aloud.
When ho' away thu children take it up ,
and at every turn the wife runs upon a
bit of manuscript.

curious that there is not ono which is

wus destroyed. Hence the muscles of
the arm were paralyzed and became
