( The freight tariff question Is one of con tinual gilovanco and inquiry. Attorney General Loose to-day received a Jcttcr from O. T. Bally , of Bloomlngton , a former member of the Nebraska legislature , citing an extortion exacted of him by the 13. ft M. railroad company , \cryreccntly , and asking that the matter ba referred to the state board of trausx | > rtatlon. The letter recites that a box of household goods won shipped to him from Fort Ann , N. Y. , on the 'JSA d'iy of June , fully prepaid , from that place , to its destination. The box Weighed 533 pounds , and thu prepaid freight bill amounted to gll.lil. When the ( roods reached Daily at Bloomington the LHirlimj- ton exacted one-half of the lint-class ratcH from Chicago , cxtr.i , before the goods would bo duHvcnd , upon the grounds that the Valno of thn box wns not given , when It had not been nnked of thu sender. The c'.mrgo From Chicago was $11.20 , or over fJ pur hundred , nearly three tunes what it was from roit Ann to Chicago , about the same distance. The question raised la , has the Burlington any right , ICRII ! or oth erwise , toiuukothisdlstlnctlon on any freight shipped over Its route conditioned DA before > r Itntcdl Mr. Bully tendered the agent at BloomIngton - Ington thu sum of money exuded , under 11 protest , and demanded the goods , which wcro denied him , mid they Btill Ho in the freight nouso nt that plnco. The matter will bo sug gested to the state board at its next regular meeting by Mr. Leeso , but ho is already of the opinion tbut it is an ititqr-stnto question and will bo declared to bo bpyond the juris diction of the board. But however that , may be , It docs not alter the fact that the case is Dno of peculiar Injustice and extortion and onght to go before some tribunal for remedy ftnd settlement. It Is now claimed that the Lost Cabin has been found and that the richness of the mlno has been fully vorillcd , as a correspondent writing from Sparta , Union county , Oregon , to the Baker City Democrat , under date of May 23 , says : Our camp was thrown into a high fo'vor of excitement to-day by the return of Carl Whitney , who has been .pros pecting in the vicinity of Lookout moun tain the naslr two weeks. Mr. Whitney says : "On last T uobday , in company with Leslie Hoi comb. The bkulls of hu mans , showing signs of a human slayer , are found , and a few hones are raked fiom the fallen limbs and underbrush. Night drove us to our camp , but sun-up found us on the spot , which to us is shrouded in mystery. A Queer \V y to Plow. Carter Harrison : In Roumanin , . ! wrote you , they break the ground wuh bix oxen anO plow deep and well. Hero this work is done with a single horse and the plow does not outer the soil over two inches. They use a queer , old-fashionod tool with two light shares , and the horse draws between a pair of shafts which lie on a level ; the beam on which the plowshare makes the pointer or rather the two beams , lying clobO to gether nrq from four to llvo foot high and morticed into the , cross-bar at the roar of the shafts. It will not make our eight-hour people , IOVQ this country when I tell them 1 saw pcoplo working in the fields a little after 5 In the morn ing and until near 9 o'clock at evening. My laboring friends at homo , give warm thanks to the Giver of all good that your lots are cast in a land of freedom , whore men work , not light ; where women are rosy compan ions , and not more boasts of bunion ; where you can do a fair day's work and got a fair dnv's wage ; where your children can learn to road and write , and are not compelled to watoh Hooka all day in Iho-dolds , the companions of sheep and of swine ; where , if you are industrious , sober nnd economical , you can , if in health , always lay by enough to keen the wolf away in jour old age. I hivvo known * him ] from the time lie nud I entered the same i class at West Point In 1813. Wo were < both from Ohio nnd naturally foil In i with each other. Wo were room mates i if I remember rightly , during the i cntli'o course. Phil at that time did not i give much token of over letting the world hear from him. His is a'n example , I ; think , very much like Grant's , show ing i how often the occasion makoa the man ; ; or , rather , the necessity of an oc casion < to bring put a man's true worth. While at West Point General Shorl- dan i did not seem to attract attention from ; his follow students or from his in structors. i Ho had no piirliculitr fond ness : for books , and yet ho had native gifts ] of intellect , and was thereby en abled ; to pass his examination , if not brilliantly , at least satisfactorily. "Of a rather retiring and reticent turn of mind , General Sheridan did not at ; that time make many friends among his fellow-students , , although ho com manded the love and respect of all With whom ho became Intimate. His rela tions with his tcachora were generally pleasant , although ho got into homo difficulty in the last year ot the course and was obliged to remain another year.- When he loft West Point ho wivs sent to Texas as second lieutenant of the First infantry , and I saw little of him until 1854 , when ho became lion- tenant in the Fourth infantry , of which I was also in command. The following year , when I was on the coast , General Hood , who wascomniandingtliocavalry , was sent away on a surveying expedi tion , and during his absence General Sheridan was assigned to take his place as second lieutenant of the Second cav alry. I wns then with him during the topographical expedition through the Cascade range of mountains , in looking for a suitable military pass. After this wo did not meet atrain till 18Q3 , once in the army of the Cumberland , and then I did not oven got a chance to speak to him. "Our most memorable mooting was when General Sheridan made lib fa mous ride from Winchester to Cedar creek. I was the first man ho spoke to after ho had time to got his breath on reaching the unioli forces. Middletown was some distance away from where the main body of the army vtar rallying along Cedar crook. The turnpike ro.id leading through the village of Middlo- town ran along Cedar creek for some distance , and wo could see the general Hying on his Iwrsc a , long distance before fore ho was within car-shot. I can see him now as bo came riding up with his horse all in a foam , his Hanks bleeding from spur-thrusts , and the rider Unshed with excitement and almost as breathless - loss as his steed. It was a scene never to bo forgotten. "Wo had routed the enemy ° omo thirty minutes or so before Gen oral Sheridan reached us , and wo were spending our time in gathering up the Btrngglors. There seemed to bo no im mediate danger , and. wo were taking the situation rather coolly. Shorldap of course had no knowledge of what had boon done , and thought that great issucw hung on his arrival in time. IIo rode up to the general hcadgUartora , leaped from his horse , and , without over tak ing time to tie it , called out : "Whoro is General Crook ? " "I was not far away and ran up us teen as possible. 'What is the situa tion ? ' ho naked. I told him that there wns no immediate danger , as our forces \voro largely in the majority , and our position was pretty well guarded. IIo said , 'Wo must never give up till wo have routed the enemy. ' These were not his exact words. They wore in the more forcible language In which Gen eral Sheridan in moments of excite- ' rnont was wont to indulgo. "Tho distance which General Sheri dan roclo , I think , was sometUincr like twelve miles. The story of the rldo as told in the favorite pootnis a trifio idealized , but in the main n pretty cor rect account of the event. Ana yet no noetic language could express the thril ling interest of that scene , as the sol diers behold their commander coming to their aid and raised their voices in a universal bhotit as ho4 approached , rid ing as only Phil Sheridan could ride. "After it was known that there was no immediate danger , General Sheri dan gave his orders to the different pfH- cers. Ho , of course , assumed chief command instead of General Wright , of the Sixth corp , who liad been in com mand during the general's absence. "Tho rest of , that engagement is now ; a part of history and 1 need not go into details , But I will dd this , that the ride and engagement wliicri follo\Yed , illustrated in a notable way General Sheridan's style of flgliting. Many people have given him credit for great dash , brilliancy and boldness in battle , but this not the truth. His dominant characteristic , as a lighter was his ten acity. IIo never would yield as long as there was a shadow of a chanco. It is said that JIG never know fear. This ! I consider rip compliment to any gonor.il. It means either that ho had not enough sense to real ! ? ! ) dangtfr or that ho is a liar when ho says ho is not afraid. Sheridan is no doubt a brave man , as bravo as the bravest , and yet ho knows what fear is as well as any soldier.
