bly dissipated. An Important Improvement
In prices wni established to-day , and nt the
top the gam from the lowest point , TSJ c for
August , was 3jfc. The Rain from Tuesday's
closing prlco was lc. The ndvanco VIM
steady and rapid. There were several pauses
and a few slight reactions , but no declines of
suniclcnt gravity to let the shorts out "on
the breaks. " Hutchlnson was a buyer on a
large scale throughout the forenoon. His
purchases , however , only constituted one of
the Incidents among several contributing to
the same end. In brief , It was n bull day
the first genuine ono that 1ms been witnessed
In weeks. Advices wore received by several
reliable parties confirmatory of the esti
mates of the French crop de
ficiency. Baker htvl a cable from
n Trench house which ho considers
ono of the most conservative firms In Eu
rope , placing the shortage nt 47,000,000 bush
els. Private market cables represented the
tone ns stronger mid mm probabilities favor
ing an advance In Kngland and on the conti
nent. The weather is unfavorable and avail
able supplies are getting light. Kcturns
from the southern wheat fields do not meet
the expectations of these who have been
counting on bountiful yields south of Mason
and Dlxon's line. The returns from Kansas
nro better than from any other quarter and
the outlook is good. The local features may
be comprised In the statement that the feel
ing Is ono of returned hcnUhfulncss. The re
covery of 3e from the bottom range is quite
important , but as the price got below Its
natural level it cannot be said to mark a very
great advance from which an Improvement
might naturally have been expected to start.
It Is an Improvement , however , for which
the bulls are profoundly grateful and whoso
significance they nro not likely to underrate.
The close was practically at the top. August
was traded in shortly before the top of the
bell on a basis of 62u and December at
84c. The volume of speculative business
transacted was large and the tone of the
marnot was unquallllcdly buoyant. The sub
rosa sensation of the day was the "roasting"
given an until recently all powerful operator
who was "whipsawcd"touso n slang phrase ,
on privileges and the irregular trading of
July and August close together and 2c
under December. Advices from the north
west arc somewhat disquieting. Reports
from isolated localities tell of rust and smut
but nothing serious as yet. Spring wheat
has been "catching up" some , but good
judges say not to the extent that the immi
gration and real estate booming nguncles of
Dakota and Minnesota have represented.
lis Corn ruled very firm and closed le higher
than on Tuesday and strong at the advance.
Cables quote corn ns strong in all positions
in the markets abroad , and the domestic
situation as strengthening. The movement
from first hands is small and does not seem
likely to get larger. On the other hand the
shipping inquiry keeps up and corn in great
quantities pours out. Local stocks must
diminish rapidly , with the daily out inspec
tion ranging from 200,000 to100,000 , bushels.
Lake engagements for to-day were reported
nt 211,000 bushels , and estimated receipts arc
given at 210 cars. Another big decrease in
tne visible supply is expected. Speculative
trade did not develop any sensations and
seemed on the whole to be rather quiet.
The absence of the .bearish inlluenccs , which
have been the distinguishing traits of late ,
was noticeable. It seems to bo generally un
derstood that there is n largo short intorcst
iu corn , bui as it Is to a great extent con
centrated there have been no signs of ( lurry
or alarm. The improvement in values is
none the less steady , however , and the mar
ket has nn unusually steady undertone.
Last prices were the- best of the day.
Oats scored nn advance of ? ( Ko , and left
off , on the top. Ono of the full lactors was
the receipt of reports from u variety of
sources by scores of mcmoors that the storm
of last night bent down heavy oats over an
area In western Illinois and in Iowa of not
less than 800 miles to 150 miles , damaging
the croji greatly. The storm was the most
Ecrlous ono that has occurred this year. The
estimated arrivals to-morrow arc 1IH1 cars.
In provisions a comparatively strong feel
ing was the rule. The modoratorun of hogs ,
coupled with n little better demand for pro
ducts , made the bull interest a little more
aggressive , and higher prices were witnessed
all around. Unscd on Tuesday's closings ,
pork sustained an advance of 5 ( < < > 10c , lard of
7)@Uc ) , and bhort ribs of lOc. The best
prices obtained prevailed mound the close.
Speculation , as of late , was mainly local and
generally quite slow. Cash pork , lard and
moats sold with rather fair freedom. Future -
turo trading was confined chiefly to August
and September. _

lower than on Monday. Hail rates on cattle

among the arrivals to-day than for any day
the past three weeks and among them were
many prime lots. One shipper had several

refused the offer. Early to-day he was ugaln
offered f ( ! , but later on the bid was withdrawn
and the chances were ho would have to take
ICES. Second class and common natives wore
no lower than Tuesday , as the run of Tex.

The cattle market has been gradually
lending toward higher prices during the past
Tew dujs. The market to-day was fully 2"o
lighcr than on Monday. This advance is
mostly In good cornfed beef cattle , while
: ho cjinmon kinds of cattle nro not much
lilgher. Tliij receipts to-day wcro very
llsht , and there wcro not cattle enough on
sale to make very much of n market.
There were only about 4 fourteen loads on
sale to-dav. The demand was strong nnd
the hogs all sold early at an advance of 15o
jver Tuesday's market ; $5.00 was reached
by ono cholco load of heavy hogs.

were natives and western dehorned , which
ho bought for $2,07 , on this market last fall.
The Lance Creek Cattle company mar
keted 70 head of 1,418-pouiid cattle yester
day at $5.40. On Monday a part of the name
drove brought only $5.15 , which * plves a very
fair Ide.i of the advance in the cattle market.
McCloud , Love & Co. sold 110 head of
1,20.1 pound western distillery fed cattle nt
$5 25 Tuesday afternoon. To-day they sold
fotty-four head more , which averaged 1.055
pounds at 5.00. They wcro fed at the Wil
low Springs distillery.
