Kirccts oflMcntnl Over-Work.
Some interesting , though not novel ,
observations on the svmptoms of inuntal
fatigue wore discussed at n rcuont moot-
in C of the Anthropological bocioty snjs
an eastern exchange. The result of
those iincsUgations goes to provo that
wetuincss of mind , the result of work ,
like other forms of uxhaustation , la
rocogni/ablo under the two different
though related asneots of irritability
and of incapacity. Further careful in
quiry into the same subject would prob
ably show that , hero as elsewhere , the
former of tucso conditions is introduc
tory to the latter , and is the natural
sequel of that btago of apparently sur--
cessful over-action which is scon when
an organ still fully cap.iblo ib
unduly stimulated. The obbcruitiona
referred to were culled from
a scries of reports by school teachers ,
and included details of their own sen
sations , as well as of the children under
their care. The signs of mental irri
tability wore apparent in slooplosbiiobs
and incapacity for task work. Lolling ,
yawning and a languid manner told
that the will was llagging. Headache
suggested overstrain in study combined
with defective vcntillation , and per
haps a too sparing diet ; while seine cu
rious facts bearing on the causation of
color blindness and somnambulism wore
also noted. Thus , in ono case the blue
color perception was for a time obliter
ated. and the sufferer from this defect
found herself painting ivy leaves a
bright orange ; while in another student ,
having retired to rest on the eve of an
examination , awoke at his desk lo Und
that ho had been luisily engaged in
drawing humorous cavtoolis relating lo
a former conversation. Here wo have
an instance of colcbral irritation due to
overwork , which suggests a somewhat
eloso connection between dreaming and
somnambulism , and alTords a clew to the
physiology of the latter condition. Over
work , both mental and bodily , arc at
'
once the most general and tho'leasl re
garded of illness to which wo are liable
in the present ggo. Do what wo may ,
it is next to impossible to escape from
it : but there is , at all events , a certain
satisfaction in being able to rocogni/o
its features , \Vo must not forgot , however -
over , that it is also to a considerable ex
tent a preventable evil , and it is cer
tainly a matter for satisfaction that this
fact fs not ignored by tlio reforming
party in the legislature. Its treatment
in individual cases requires chiolly that
duo attention be paid to the two great
essentials of timely rest and wholesome
diet. Work , however , irksome , may , it
is generally allowed , bp undertaken on
a very liberal t-culo , if it is not too con
tinuous , hut is broken by timely and
adequate intervals of rest. The Value
of a plain and liberal dietary is hardly
le-iS , and wo may take it as a maxim for
the times that so long as apiiotito and
sleep are unimpaired there is no dan
gerous degree of overwork , and con
versely , that n failure in cither of tho-o
respects should bo regarded as u warn
ing signal , to which attention should be
paid bj rulio\ingtho strain of exertion.
