died at 11 o'clock ; confirmed.
Speculators who had bought wheat yester
day confident that the emperor's death would
sharply advance Uio foreign markets , nnd
nnothcr large class , who had held on to their
purchases through several days of declining
markets In tlio hope that this snm J event
would let them out at least without loss nnd
probably with profit , haJ to fueo this dls-
nptiolnting fact , that foreign markets were
weak notwithstanding the cinporor's death.
It was little wonder then that there was a
lot of long wheat for sale , and when
Hutchinson and Ream bcean selling freely ,
nnd the longs could expect ntf help from
that quarter , the anxluty to sell became u
furore and the market broke Ic even from
the low opening price. On the way down the
commission men were largo sellers on stop-
loss orders , and a few buying orders were
filled with but llttlo effect on the market.
Wheat wiw bought at J QPfc below the lim
its given In boino cases , the descent was so
rapid. Tticu the big boars began to cover
their shorts , stopped the decline und put
prices up again. It w.isonly a temporary re
action , however , for titter nn advance of J
the market sagged again , touched a still
lower point , and the close of tlio uiornlngscs-
lon was very near the bottom , and weak ut
that. Hcam and HutchJnson were credited
with covering u largo" quantity of short
wheat , uut they were selling some at a de
cline and It was thought by inuny they were
working for a further break. Jones , ICcnnct
& Hopkins bought August wheat at the de
cline and were about the only support aside
from the covering by shorts. The friends of
wheat wore apathetic. Aside from the bear
ish influences mentioned , the hot weather ,
the wannest of tlio season , was an encour
agement to short sellers. They argued
that with the best iwssiblo weather and
harvesting already begun even so much
Hhortngo in the crop as predicted would nut
bo felt for mouths yet nnd that the weight of
long wheat which tired holders would unload
must further depress prices. The worst crop
news vet received came from Indiana , but it
was of no effect , or that effect was offset by
n conspicuous exhibition of remarkably fine
samples of wheat , oats , rye and com grown
in Texas. The exports of whcut were smaller
than of Into , but still fulr , while receipts at
primary markets showed n considerable fall
ing off , nnd Indications were for a larpo de
crease In the visible supply. Hut this , like all
other bullish Influences , was disregarded.
July wheat opened at S35fc ? , fell to
reached to WJXe again , declined with small
reactions to S'J5 ( @ bS fo , advanced to bllke ,

< c again , and closed at 1 o'clock at

For the first time in weeks' the specula
tive corn market did not respond to the de
crease In local receipts by an advance in
price. To-day It scorned thattno hot weather ,
so favorable to the growing crops , and the
extreme weakness in wheat were the con
trolling Influences in the corn pit. T.ho mar-
hot opened J < e lower than yesterday's close
nnd Immediately dropped nnotbcr MO with
scarcely any trading. Nobody seemed to
want any corn. After that there were some
Blight reactions , but prices fell another %
before there was niucll show of improve
ment. There wa r a fair reaction but an
other dccjiuu followed with ttie last drop in
wheat , and the close was near the bottom.
Trade was not very largo , as the interest ol
the day chiefly centered in wheat. July corn
opened at H'itie , declined to 51J c , advanced
to 52 ? < fc , declined to filjfc again , and closed
at 51jf@MJ < c. September corn opened at
, sold down to f < c and closed at 62x5 < c.
The depressing Influences of the day were
felt also in the B | > cculutlvo oats market , inoro
particularly In the more deferred futures.
Fine weather nnd sympathy with the weak
ness in corn was given as the weakening
factors. 'Hulchinbon was a free seller of
August oala and M. Bocllno & Co. sold year
oats. June oats sold down from 33 to ! )2c. )
July oats opened at 33l c , sold down to ifc ,
and closed at 3.c. ) . August oats sold down
from 28tfc to 27Kc , closing at 27
Year oats sold down from 2tSV c to 2 < Jc.
There was a fair degree of interest shown
In the provision market , but trading was in
clined to bo spasmodic and in the aggregate
was of only a moderate volume. At the stock
yards prices for the raw material were
stronger , notwithbtanding tlio full average
receipts of hogs and warm weather
At the opening there were numerous sinal
country lots of long pork offered for sale am
the weakness occasioned thereby was intent , !
lied by Heiuii and Clifton belling considerable

Attempts were made to raid grangers on the
action of the Iowa railroad commissioners In

dull. Some slight gains wcro mndo over the
opening prices , but the advantage was not
maintained , the list giving way immediately.
Though there were no special features In the

sustained , however , with Northwestern lend

The cattle market remained stationary to
day nftcr advancing nearly 10@20c u day for
some time back. Good corn fed cattle sold
about steady , but the local packers were the
principal buyers , eastern markets not being
such as to encourage shippers. Common
nnd grassy cattle wcro easier and very slow.
Everything desirable wns sold before the
close.
HORS.
There was a decided gain in the receipts of
hogs , there being 103 loads nsngninst seventy-
four on yesterday. The market was fairly
active at steady prices and the hogs wcrc-all
sold before midday. Ono fancy load of hogs
reached $5.00.
