Tun HER. ] The wheat mnrkot was neither
nctivo nor Interesting to-tiny. Most of the
session it was heavy with a noticeable tend
ency towards n lower range , but rcnctlona
always came and the close of the morning's
session was only } { c lower than that of yes
terday. There wns some bullish news early
nml for n few minutes nt the opening there
eccmcd to be some prospect of an upturn ,
First sales were > c above last night's close ,
and there was a further advance of c , but
It required but little selling by Hutchlnson
to set the crowd on that side , and they put
prices down c In a brief time. To a man
who watches for controlling influences this
break wns rather puzzling nt the
time. Consols showed a decline of
two points , making four points In nil since
yesterday morning. Cables were simply
dull , but Indicated no change In price. It
was the third consecutive day of fnlr ex
ports , nnd receipts In the northwest were
tjulto small , particularly In Duluth. More
over the Cincinnati Price Current estimated
the wheat crop at 35,000,000 bushels , nnd
bad crop news was plentiful. Kammercr
had one dispatch from Indiana Raying there
would Do pO per cent of n crop nnd another
saying 40 per cent wns plowed up and the
remainder would not make more than nine
'bushels ' to the acre. Ho nlso had n dispatch
from California saying tlioru had been
Borne improvement there , but there would
not bo much more than half of last year's
crop. These were the kind of Influences
against which whcnt had to drop , but it
dropped. The only news to favor sellers
was the scarcity of bear news , but this went
rather to destroy the effect of certain
strengthening news received yesterday.
Numerous cables to James E. Uoyd & llro.
Indicated that tlio damage to wheat in Franco
by Italian bugs or grasshoppers was not of
much extent , although they hud done great
damage to wheat in Algeria. It was admit
ted , however , that the outlook for wheat In
Franco was not promising. The news
that Emperor Frederick was sinking
and that his physicians had lost
hope of saving him seemed to have
no effect. The market was exceedingly nar
row as far as the number of participants was
concerned and at times was stagnant with
nobody trading , .vet the volume was not small.
In one transaction Hutchinson sold Jones ,
Kcnnott & Hopkins 500,000 worth of August
wheat at 84J c. The last named 11 rm was n
persistent aud heavy buyer of August wheat
en every decline. HutcMnson's brokers
were buying July at about 83e. July wheat
opened at 84J c , sold up immediately to S4 ° 6c.
then fell to S4c , fluctuated between that
price and nnd 84 0 for some time , advanced
to 84Y@S4J4c , declined to 84 > fc , and closed
there at 1 o'clock. December wheat opened
at bQJgc , sold down to & 5fc and closed at
The receipts of corn were 109 cars less than
the estimate , nnd as a consequence the spec
ulative market opened very strong , llrsisulcs
being at J c over yesterday's ' clo'-o. There
were BO many longs willing to unload at the
advance , however , that it could not hold and
gradually worked down with frequent reac
tions % o , but recovered somewhat before the
close. The estimates for to-morrow are still
larger and were n disappointment to the
bulls , yet receiving houses 11 ml a great falling
off in receipts duo hero in the future and are
advised that farmers have nearly stopped
delivering at country paints. No other in-
lluenco than receipts at this market seems to
bo thought of by speculators and prlcej seem
to go up or down simply as receipts decrease
or increase. July corn opened nt 53 < Sfe , fluc
tuated between that price and 53l c for a
time , then declined to52c , advanced to 53'fc
and eloscd at K3'rf. ' September corn opened
nt 54V e , sold up to 54c , down to 63Jfe and
closed at 54c.
In the speculative oats market nearer fu
tures showed a considerable improvement
while more deferred were dull and declined a
trifle. The volume of trudo was not largo
nnd there was no special feature. June outs
opened at 32Kc bid. sold up to 33c nnd closed
with that price bid. July outs opened nt
83 , ' < c , sold down to 33e and up to 33i , < ? c ,
closing with that price asked. September
oats opened at 27 > e , sold down to 27l c and
closed at S7&o bid.
In provisions n quiet day was experienced.
For cash delivery there was a better inquiry
nnd larger transactions , but speculation wns
slow. From the start operators were un
willing to take hold , and in the future mar-
liet there was little or no change , 1 o'clock
prices being generally the same ns lust
night's closing.

THE HEU. ] STOCKS The shorts have car
ried largo lines of stock for the past two
days , hut the short interest Is still largo and
the demand for stocks in tno loan crowd this
morning was brisk. In several Instances
Etocks were scarce. This created a bettci
feeling , and up to noon a fair business was
transacted , but after that the majority o
largo traders betook themselves to the races
ami dullness settled down over the marxot
O | > onlng sales were on a weak market , with
declines ranging from } { to $ f , Missouri Pa
clfid having the { cad. Thu decline was onli
temporary , however , for prices began to rUe
immediately , and almost everything on the
list soon showed better prices than ycster
day's closing figures , though there was con
tidcrablo fovcrUUness displayed. Manhat
tan was the feature of the trading and it ad-
vaeyed 2 per cent , though tlis greater por-
Ion of the gain was afterward lost Can
ada Southern gained on thjo remainder of the
1st from } ( to ) , except Richmond & Wcit
? oint preferred , which advanced 1'f per
cent on very light dealings. Reading , St.
Paul and Lake Shore were nctivo stocks ,
with a fair business In half a dozen others ,
jut the general list was dull nnd unlntcrcst-
ng throughout. The advance culminated
about 11 o'clock. The bear leaders regard
.ho market ns n narrow one and some say
; hat even the money of the Vanderbllts can
not save Lake Shore from a sharp decline ;
nlso that Union Pacific must soon go lower.
N'cws from the west was not nt all encour
aging to holders of stocks , ns rnto troubles
with grangers remain ns badly muddled as
ever. The speculative railway managers ,
who have for years been a power In the mar
ket nnd who have nt times sloshed rates as
best suited their Interests , arc beginning to
see that their power Is fast slipping from
them , as the railway commissioners of the
different western states are beginning to
take the power of making rates into their
own hands. This movement wilt eventually
end In a greater stability of rates , which will
be better for all concerned.
