> t THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : TUESDAY 12. JTOTB 1888. THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS A Bearish Sontlmont Gains Ground In the Wheat Pit. THE GOVERNMENT CROP REPORT. Conflicting liitorjiretntloii * of HB Itcnl Import Corn Hllll Weak Under Heavy Uecclpts-Onts De pressed Cattle Slow. CHICAGO PKODUCK MAUKBT. CiiiCAfio , Juno 11. [ Special Tclcgnun to TUP. Unn.l The wheat trndera changed tliclr minds three times on Saturday ns to the cfTect which the government crop report ought to have on the price of wheat. This cmihlcd them to hold four different opinions mid put prices up nnd down with u very lively motion. Their last opinion that day was that the government report was n , very bullish document and pointed toward much higher prices. In pursuance of this thought the market closed firm nt the top and the bulls and holders of wheat generally went homo happy. AH this bright outlook waa changed over Sunday , not from any fresh news received , but simply from fuithcr figuring nnd moro extended reflection upon Mr. Dodge's estimates. It was claimed with great confidence by the bears that this was n bearish document , the reason giver , bMng that It was no WOMO than the May report nnd upon said May report prices had been advanced unduly. With n fair crop in Eu rope , as wns now promised , iinportliif'Hxmti- tries , It was claimed , would bo practically in dependent of America , and it was admitted that , with a crop -100,000,000 bushels , there would bo enough for us to cat with some over , and that small surplus if nobody wanted It , the bears insisted , would set low- prices for the whole crop. On this kind of reason ing there appeared to bo considerable otter ing by short sellers and with no great de mand from the outside to put prices up many longs were anxious to unload. The result was ti decline of about Ic from Satur day's closing prices. They were few other things besides bear crop talk to depress the market. Cables were no lower , and as the llrst figures for the visible supply statement came in they indicated n very slight do- arcane , If any. Tno completed statement thowcd u dccreaco of dTO,000 bushels nnd being fully 500,000 bushels moro than was expected early it wns thought would produce n firmer feeling. It did for n Bhort time , hut the improvementowas only temporary and the close of the morning ses sion was very near the bottom and at about the prices ruling Saturday before the crop report came. July wheat opened at 85J6 nnd on the tilling of early buying orders , ad vanced to cOtfc'CybOJ c , then declined , with small reactions , to 8 , " > c , advanced to fcft c on the visible supply statement , then declined to SfxSSS'iiC , which was the price at the 1 o'clock close. December wheat opened nt 65c , sold at 87.fjc. ! down to SOJtc , and closed at 1 o'clock at bGJfc. The pressure ot enormous receipts of corn is still on the speculative market in that grain , and produces the inevitable result of lower prices. To this was added to-day the weakening effect of an increase in the visi ble supply of corn of l.V.io.OOO bushels. These continued heavy receipts wear out the p Uieiico of holders and bring out some long corn every day , and the demand from the shorts , who are realizing prollts , and fro in Investors , who think the run of big receipts must soon cease , is not sullloimit to sustain prices. July opened nt S''c , and nfter selling at fil tf-We , advanced to f > 2c , then fell to fil } c , fluctuated between that price and fil c somcjtimc nnd eloscdX" 51J e. September corn opened at Me , sold atKt e , then declined to the close , which was at 52e bid. Unexpectedly largo receipts of oats , together witli crop news of n fitvoniblo character , exercised a depressing inllucnce uiion the speculative oats market , and the decline In corn wns a. weakening factor. Trade , however , was not large. Juno oats declined from 3 Xc , which wns Saturday's close , to aa c , and closed at 'M di'M c. July oats opened at S'Jj c , fell to 3 'sc , hut closed at U'-Jl c. September oats opened and closed at7'jc , selling at one time to 27c. In provisions the week opened without any improvement in biisincss. A dull feeling had control and trailing was limited and featureless and the movement favored easier prices. The day's market averaged lower than Saturday and at 1 o'clock pork showed u decline of 10iJ ( > 15c , lam of ' JViQT'ic and short ribs of % ( ? . " > c. This cl.iss sold fairly well. They were not then dlsfrimiimUul against , but to-day noono bccmcd to want them. Salesmen that hud good to fair sorts of grassers could not get bids for them , and hero it might ho stated that from this time until the close of the Tcxun und western beason the shipper that sends green grassy cattle to this market stands ton chances to ono of losing money , for the simple reason that green natives will have to sell right alongside of rangers. nnd when it comes to that the buyer will tuko the Texan or ranger every time for the good reason that pound for pound when dressed , the r.mger is worth the most money to butchers. The rungcr will shrink less nnd makes n better show on the hooks.
