TUB DEB. ] Everybody hnd a chance In the
wheat market chls morning. It opened
higher and went right along up for a while
In n manner to satisfy the most enthusiastic
bull , then It wavered , struggled for n little ,
rind began to drop by easy stages until it had
lost all the early gain and as much more.
The trading , as n whole , was large , but it
was spasmodic nt times very active and nt
other times almost lifeless. Thcro was
enough bull feeling left over from yester
day's bulge to make a good start at the open
ing and then thcro wcro a lot of outside buyIng -
Ing orders apparently brought in by yester
day's upturn to nil , while the local bears
were cautious nnd "feeling for the top" with
much caro. There was good buying or St.
Louis account , nnd It was reported that there
were foreign orders hero both for cash wheat
and to cover the former sales of futures.
There was nothing particularly new about
the crop news received but the Influence of
that which came yesterday was felt and the
bulls were predicting that the government
report on the lUth would show a decline in
the condition. On the other hand thcro was
considerable disappointment over the clear
ances of wheat from the seaboard. It hnd
bcon talKcd of yesterday afternoon that ! KX- )
000 bushels of wheat w"ould bo reported as
cleared from Now York to-day. In fact but
M1XX ( ) bushels wore cleared from that Port
nnd very little from Philadelphia nnd liono
from Haltimorc. Flour exports also wcro
smaller than of late. The receipts nt pri
mary markets wore somewhat larger than of
Into , chlcllv bccauso of the unusually largo
arrival of y6.COl ) bushels at Toledo. The re
ceipts nt New York were 445,000 bushels.
Yet New York was strong nnd genj
crnlly mivnncing even while prices \vero
rccecding hero. In fact all the other uomestic
markets seemed to bo rather stronger than
ours , except Milwaukee , where it sharp nd-
vance was followed by a swifter decline. In
this market July wheat opened at fcCc , which
was c higher than yesterday's close , ad
vanced to WX&WiXc , then declined gradually
to Wijfc , fluctuated between that price and
Me for a time , then dropped to bfi o again
nnd closed at 1 o'clock at 85 c. Prices for
Juno nnd August wheat were the same as
July during u large portion of the session.
Them was a largo buying of July nnd Belling
of August by ono of the local traders , which
was said to be the settling up of n "straddle"
made a week or so ago when July was nt a
considerable premium over August.
December wheat opened nt 87fc ! , sold up to
b Xc , down to 8(5J ( < c. nnd closed at $ nc.
The fortunes of the corn pit were quite as
varied as those of the wheat traders. There
was n strong nnd advancing market early
followed by n rapid break upon which prices
reached the lowest point for weeks. It all
seemed to depend upon receipts. They were
less to-day by 103 cars thau wcro expected
nnd thereupon n very urgent demand arose
from the shorts nnd the price of July was put
up 5 c from yesterday's closing , but when
the largo estimate for to-morrow became
known the revulsion of feeling in the pit
seemed to be complete and under the unload
ing of long corn nnd the offerings of short
Kellers , the price fell lc from the top with
no greater reaction than # c nt any time.
July corn opened nt DHc , sold up to 55J/C ,
down to 53Jfc nnd closed nt 1 o'clock at 54c
bid. September corn opened at 5T > % c , sold
up to ST > Xc , down to nnd closing at 54KC-
'The speculative oats market followed the
course of corn very closely , opening higher
nnd advancing early on. to lose nil the ad
vance and a little more before tnc close. The
volume'of trade was only moderate. July
oats opened at 33 c , sold at 34c , down to and
closing at as c. September oats opened at
279 < c , sold at " } fo down to and closing nt
'a'he ' provision trade was too slow to de
velop any particular interest. Advices from
the stock yards , where hogs were quoted 5c
higher , occasioned a strong opening and in
itial sales all around occurred at n small ad
vance on last night's closings. This Improve
ment , however , was more than lost in the ab
sence of n sustaining demand and nt 1 o'clock

prices are climbing upward at a lively rate ,
To-day's murkut wus lOo higher and the cattle
tlo wcro all sold early. One choice load itof
145S-lb cattle sold nt $ 3.S5. The receipts full
far short of supplying the demand.
The market was well supplied wiTh hogs
and on account of the heavy receipts prices :
wore lower. The best heavy hoes wcro not
if any , lower , but mixed hogs told

about 5c lower ftnd common mixed and light
hogs 5IOe lower. The market was fairly
active and the hops wcro about nil sold before
noon and everything was taken before the
close.

Kerry & Uiven , Scward , had a load of hogs
on the market that sold ut $5.55.
Ilobort Stewart , a cattle buyer from Kan
sas City , was looking over the yards to-day.
Among the visitors at the yards was L. L.
Happal , Chicago , who stopped hero on his
way west.
Mr. Thompson , of the flrm of Thompson &
Cook , Wnkellcld , was hero with a load each
of cattle und hogs.

The Union Rendering company say that
the pricu of dead hogs will have to bo re
duced still furtncr. In the month of Jan
uary the company reports their loss at (350.12 ;
for February it was f.VM.97 ; for March
{ 240,14. At Chicago the rendering companies
pay only } < c I'cr ' lb for dead hogs and the
company here cannot compete with them in
producing grcaso wlicn they have to pay Ic
per lb for dead hogs.
